On average, 22 veterans take their own lives every day. This is a pandemic that can be solved simply by letting people know there are answers to their questions.
The DK5K Tough Run is a 5K obstacle course aiming to raise awareness about the challenges veterans face every day and the issue of suicide. There will be two divisions — competitive and recreational.
Funds raised will benefit the NMC chapter of Student Veterans of America (SVA) and 22-2-None, two local organizations offering free services for veterans.

The Traverse City Parking Patrol will begin enforcing parking at NMC on Monday, September 11. All faculty, staff and students must have their 2017-2018 permits displayed by that date.
The Traverse City Police Department has provided the following information on how to avoid parking tickets on campus by properly displaying your parking permit:
If you do get a ticket, payment can be made at the red dropoff payment box at the east end of the Cedar lot in front of the Health & Science building. You can also mail the fine in to the city, or pay at the parking services office in the public parking garage at 303 E. State St. Payment information is also on each ticket.
If you have any questions about parking enforcement on campus, please call (231) 995-1111.

MEMENTO – NMC Magazine Fall 2017 – Volume 40 Issue 1
Memories endure the test of time fully intact or fragmented, they are potent remnants of moments both good and bad. So much of who we are is not in the foreground, but in past recollections, where our chronicles of nostalgia unfold into the present. NMC Magazine invites students, faculty, staff, and alumni to create mementos of those indelible pieces of life through your artwork or writing.
To celebrate our 40th volume, NMC Magazine will publish 40 works by 40 individuals. You may submit multiple entries, but no more than a maximum of one each issue (fall/spring) may be accepted. The deadline for fall submissions is Monday, October 16, 2017.
Submit your art, designs, essays, fiction, illustrations, nonfiction, photographs, poems, and more to nmcmag@mail.nmc.edu. Hard copies can be delivered to the Fine Arts Building, Attn: Caroline Schaefer-Hills or Scholars Hall 214, Attn: Alissia Lingaur. Include a completed submission form with each entry, available at nmc.edu/nmcmagazine.
Typically, an electrical outage in a specific building or a portion of campus will be reported by the affected occupant(s) to Facilities Services or Campus Security. Facilities Services may also become aware of outages during and after normal working hours via the campus monitoring system. (more…)
TRAVERSE CITY — On Saturday, September 30, NMC Student Life, in partnership with the NMC student group Voices, will host Walk, Run, Empower, a 5K Run/Walk to both raise awareness and help end sexual violence. Sexual violence is a prevalent issue both on and off college campuses, and it is extremely important to raise community awareness in order to generate change. Walk, Run, Empower was created with that intention, while also bringing together Northwestern Michigan College and the community in a fun, exciting and active way. All proceeds will benefit NMC Voices to further their advocacy and support for student survivors of sexual violence.
The 5K will start at and end on College Drive; the race begins at 9 a.m. Cash and checks can be made payable to NMC (subject memo: Voices) and will be accepted on the day of the race. Participants can enjoy free snacks and refreshments, while connecting with many of our student organizations, campus resources and community collaborators before and after the race. Registration fee is $15 for students and $20 for faculty, staff, and community members. Entry fee also includes a Walk, Run, Empower 5K race t-shirt!
Please join us as a runner, walker, volunteer or supporter for this 5K benefit race. You can sign up to participate in the race, to be a volunteer, or to have a table, using the links below. We will also have same day registration, which will begin at 8 a.m. the morning of the race.
Join us as we walk, run and empower one another towards a world free of violence.

TRAVERSE CITY — Northwestern Michigan College welcomes the community to celebrate its new $8.8-million, 135-bed student housing and fitness center Monday, August 21. There will be a ribbon cutting at 1 p.m. followed by public tours until 6 p.m.
The new North Hall features quad style suites with shared kitchen and living space. It is located on NMC’s Front Street main campus near the Dogwood and Elmwood parking lots.
North Hall is one of several on-campus residential community options. This is the first student housing built at NMC in more than 40 years. The student apartments were constructed in 1973 and the East Hall dormitory was built in 1965.
“Historically NMC was a leader in providing students with access to affordable housing options in the decades after the community founded this institution,” President Timothy J. Nelson said. “We recognize to continue to meet the needs of our learners both today and into the future we must break down barriers to education, including something as fundamental as housing. Research has shown students who live on campus persist and complete educational goals at a higher level. We are dedicated to helping them achieve their goals.”
Student housing at NMC has been at capacity for four years. North Hall is currently more than 90 percent full for the fall semester. The center has also been designed with a flexible format where sections could be used for workforce development housing in off-peak times.
The project is self funded.
Spence Brothers oversaw construction of North Hall. The company was awarded the project after a competitive bid process.
The new North Hall is one of several major construction projects currently at the college including an expansion and renovation of the Dennos Museum Center and the recently approved West Hall Innovation Center.

Kudos to: Cathy McCall, Dan Wasson, Trisha Domagala, Sam Foster, Zeb McCauley, Alison Thornton, Paul Perry, Ed Blough, Nancy Durecki, Brian Lewis, Phil Trowbridge, Casey White, Michelle Yeider and Gary Schetteck– The assistance provided by these individuals was invaluable as Enrollment Services began the office moves for the new “One Stop Shop.” Their patience, smiles and hard work as we moved offices, relocated computer stations and printers, moved phone lines, patched walls, etc., etc. went above and beyond expectations. Their willingness to make themselves available to answer questions and work individually with team members was very much appreciated. Their good nature and continued smiles as we threw last minute changes their way were contagious!
