Next International Affairs Forum: WMD

One of America’s leading experts on the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and a  key policy-maker in US arms control and proliferation prevention will address the question, “Are Weapons of Mass Destruction Out of Control?” at an International Affairs Forum lecture at 6 p.m. May 17 in Milliken Auditorium.

Dr. Susan J. Koch is an independent consultant, specializing in policy issues regarding the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. From 1982 until 2007 she held a series of senior positions in the White House National Security Council Staff, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Department of State and the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, focused on nonproliferation and arms reduction policy. Dr. Koch began her government career in the Directorate of Intelligence of the Central Intelligence Agency, studying West European political issues.

Before her government service, she taught international and comparative politics at Mount Holyoke College and the University of Connecticut. Dr. Koch received a B.A. from Mount Holyoke College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from Harvard University.

The eight-part IAF series brings diplomats, policy makers, journalists and others from all over the globe to Milliken Auditorium. All programs begin with a reception in the Sculpture Court of the Dennos Museum Center at 5:15 p.m. and are followed at 6 p.m. by the lecture and a discussion period in Milliken Auditorium.

Kudos to Kristen Salathiel

To Kristen Salathiel for being a dedicated, kind and hard-working instructor who is always available to her students and colleagues.  She goes out of her way to support her students.  When her colleagues need support or ideas on how to manage a student or other classroom issue, she is an attentive listener and creative thinker.

Kudos to Ooley, Campbell & Krygier

To Eric Ooley, McKenzie Campbell, and Stephen Krygier for volunteering to welcome guests during the commencement ceremony this past weekend.  They were especially well-dressed, showed up early, stayed late, and did a great job of greeting and congratulating our guests. They helped set the tone for a very comfortable and positive experience for our grads and their families.

Kudos to the Commencement Team

To The Commencement Team Committee for implementing yet again another successful commencement ceremony this past weekend.   Some of the people involved are: LeAnne Baumeler, Bob Chauvin, Sonia Clem, Erin Deloney, Andy Dolan, Judy Druskovich, Jan Gasnik, Linda Glaesmer and her crew, Holly Gorton, Ronda Grindel, Irina Grougan, Jack Light, Debra Marx, Shayrrl McCready, Shannon Owens, Dennis Schultz, Heather Somero, Carol Taberski and Meg Young. Thanks to everyone!

Kudos to Rochelle Hammontree

To Rochelle Hammontree for her sheer determination and expert research skills in helping answer a question.  Rochelle answered the reference question of the week – maybe even the semester: “I need a poem about Hannibal and his elephants.” A bright spot in a busy week!

Are You An NMC Wellness Olympian?

The NMC Wellness Olympics are here!

  • We now have 47 NMC Olympians;  people just keep signing up!
  • We have logged 264 hours of exercise!

There are two parts to the NMC Wellness Olympics: Olympic Training and Olympic Events.

Olympic Training
During Olympic Training participants will keep track of points through an online form. 15 minutes of exercise = 1 point. Please self report the week of the exercise. As well, participants will determine if they are a “Veteran Olympian” (currently exercising 3x per week) or “Amateur Olympian” (currently exercising less than 2x per week).
Olympic Events
A variety of events will be occurring during the Olympics (July 27-August 12). These events are still to be determined.
What’s my next step?
