LANSING, Mich. – Mary VanderKolk, Health Occupations Instructor at Northwestern Michigan College, has been appointed to the Michigan Board of Nursing by Governor Rick Snyder.
Vander Kolk was one of three appointments to the Michigan Board of Nursing, the others are Joshua Meringa, of Grandville and Jill DeVries of Zeeland.
“These experienced professionals are committed to excellence in nursing and I am confident they will serve as great additions to the board,” Snyder said.
The 23-member board oversees the licensure requirements and standards for nurses in Michigan and serve four-year terms.
VanderKolk will represent professional registered nurses with a baccalaureate degree engaged in nursing education in a licensed practical nurse program. She is a professor of nursing and lead instructor at NMC, and previously worked at Munson Medical Center, Eastern Michigan University, Catherine McCauley Health Center, and Sparrow Hospital. She has a bachelor’s in psychology and nursing from Michigan State University, a master’s in nursing from Wayne State University and a master’s in business administration from Lake Superior State University. She replaces Michelle Johnson and her term expires June 30, 2016.
All appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the state Senate.

Northwestern Michigan College’s successful Upward Bound program, a part of the college for 20 years, was among 233 programs nationally that did not receive federal TRIO funding from the United States Department of Education in the most recent funding cycle. NMC’s Upward Bound program has provided various educational services for first generation, low income TCAPS and Suttons Bay 9th through 12th grade students and their parents.
As part of the funding process, each three to four years NMC Upward Bound staff created a grant proposal for a federal TRIO grant. This most recent round of the grant proposal process ended with 780 grants funded out of 1,013 applicants across the nation. The funding band was 106.2 to 108 out of 100 possible points for the grant and additional potential bonus points. Though NMC’s grant proposal earned more than 100 points (it scored 102), it was not among those to receive continued funding.
We are saddened by this outcome because we believe that this type of program is a necessary ongoing educational enhancement for the Traverse Bay community.
The intent of the Upward Bound program is to provide a pathway for students to engage and be successful in their high school experience, graduate and then continue their education by attending college. The Upward Bound staff members developed and coordinated weekly mentoring, tutoring, and college readiness curriculum opportunities for Upward Bound students throughout their high school years as well as ACT preparation and other activities to build relationships between the students and staff. The staff members also assisted Upward Bound students and their families in identifying potential colleges, and completing college applications and financial aid processes. The Upward Bound program at NMC enjoyed 20 years of success as graduates committed to working diligently to finish high school and attend college thereby creating a new educational pathway for themselves and their future families.
Therefore, NMC is in the process of applying for another TRIO Upward Bound math and science grant. In addition, we are creating an NMC Idea Summary proposal to include programming and administrative support for TCAPS students participating in the NMC Commitment Scholarship Program, Upward Bound, dual enrollment, concurrent enrollment, and early and middle college. We will keep you informed as decisions are made about the potential transformation of this program and our plans to communicate this information to the students and families currently being served by Upward Bound .
Proceeds from the breakfast will benefit not only the Cherry Festival Foundation, but also the Northwestern Michigan College’s School of Aviation. Did we mention there will be a meet and greet with the Air Show Pilots? Pilots are slated to be at the breakfast from 8am to 10am so come early, grab breakfast, meet the performers and find a great spot for the Air Show!
Michael Dennos, 1920-2012, namesake of the Dennos Museum Center, died June 28 in Traverse City. He was 92.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 7, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
A Memorial Celebration of Life will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 8, at the First Congregational Church.
A memorial service and dedication of commemorative portraits will be held at the Dennos in August.

Innovation has been a hallmark of Northwestern Michigan College since before we were founded. Community leaders, seeking a new model for higher education, obtained legislation that helped make NMC the first community college in Michigan.
Innovation remains central to how we operate today, and was formally articulated in our Values by the Board of Trustees in 2007: “We will continuously improve the learning experience and its relevance to those we serve through innovation, agility and thoughtful risk-taking.”
To help encourage and support innovation, the NMC Board of Trustees asked the NMC Foundation to establish Innovation Grant Funds for faculty, staff and students.
The innovation grant program was established to fund innovative initiatives – ideas and opportunities that emerge during the year and occur outside of normal NMC budget sources and processes.
