Kudos

To Kristal Nolf and Linda Racine for their work with ORPE in developing the planning tutorials and tools. Kristal and Dave Dalquist were also extremely helpful in working through the technical aspects of preparing the planning intranet site. Thank you!

To Judy Druskovich who has taken on maritime admissions responsibilities while our admissions specialist has been on leave. Over the past 90 days, she has learned a great deal about our industry and has done a tremendous job assisting in all areas of the maritime admissions process. Her great attitude, interpersonal skills and willingness to learn new processes are at the core of NMC values. Judy’s extensive cross training will pay great dividends in the operation of maritime admissions and the Academy. Judy did all of this while maintaining her front desk responsibilities.

To Wayne Moody and Dave Dell for their extraordinary response to a devastated, struggling student who came to an instructor yesterday in tears. She had gone out to her car after class to leave to pick up her two boys and her car was making a horrible noise and would hardly move. Wayne Moody told the instructor, “Bring her over!”  Wayne and Dave not only fixed her car right there on the spot, but after hearing of her struggles, they made some calls and are fixing the rest of her car for $14 instead of the $300 she was quoted. This student was on the verge of walking away from NMC due to financial issues and stress, and now feels part of an organization that cares and is committed to continuing. Thank you Wayne and Dave – you are truly awesome!

This month in NMC History: January 2012

50 Years Ago:

(Caption reads: The juke box placed in the cafeteria by the College Council at students‟ request stands silent. The box has been turned down low because of faculty pressure. Students will not play the machine because it is impossible to hear it. It looks like students will have to wait until the Union is built to have a place of their own. – Nor’Wester, January 19, 1962)

25 Years Ago:

  • Celebrity lecture speaker was author (Paper Lion), amateur athlete, and actor George Plimpton.
  • NMC saved $60,000 in interest by the early payoff of the federal loans which had helped finance the building of East and West Halls.

Four ways to make lasting change in the New Year!

Last month, the Wellness Committee survey sent to NMC regular employees on wellness; following are two questions we asked, along with the responses:

1. Have you recently given thought to making lifestyle changes that would result in better health (such as smoking cessation, better eating habits, increased physical activity)?

Yes 82%
No 18%

2. If yes, how far did you get in making lifestyle changes for better health?

I thought about making a change but went no further. 14%
I started to make changes but they didn’t last for more than a week. 16%
I made changes that lasted for a few months. 17%
I made lifestyle changes that I’m still following. 52%

KUDOS to the 52% who said they have made lasting lifestyle changes! The Wellness Committee wants to help the remaining 48% achieve their goal!

NMC counselor Joseph Sanok will facilitate an interactive learning session on how to make lasting changes this year. Food, diet, exercise, or other lifestyle changes will be discussed. This is the first of an ongoing series by multiple presenters to meet your wellness needs as expressed on the Wellness Survey.

Joseph Sanok is also owner of Mental Wellness Counseling and is a frequent speaker about a variety of psychological issues. He has Master’s degrees in Counseling Psychology and Community Counseling from Western Michigan University. As well, he is no stranger to making goals in the New Year as he successfully formed the habit of flossing his teeth in 2009.

Date: Friday, January 27

Time: 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Place: Oleson Center Room 112

Bring your lunch if you’d like – healthy snacks will be provided.

Please accept this invitation from the Wellness Committee as we work toward bringing a “Culture of Wellness” to NMC! We will videotape the session for those unable to attend.

THIS MONTH IN NMC HISTORY FOR DECEMBER

50 Years Ago:

  •  Sunday December 3, 1961 was the date of the Dedication Ceremony for the Mark Osterlin Library. Bernard Rink, College Librarian, urged the public to “participate in the dedication of this new cultural asset.” (Right: photo of the architect handing over the library key to Les Biederman and Mr. Rink).

25 Years Ago:

  •  The Welding Program began an “open enrollment” policy, enabling students to begin taking the course at a choice of three-week intervals throughout the year.
  •  NMC banned smoking in buildings, with the exception of private offices and a designated smoking area in each building.
  •  NMC closed for a half-day in remembrance of founder Les Biederman, who died on November 29, 1986.

10 Years Ago:

  • In early December, there was no snow and temperatures rose to above 60 degrees, a near-record (See photo).
  • White Pine Press ran an article quoting international students concerned that the post-9/11 heightened airport security might impact their getting back into the United States after semester break.

From the NMC Archives at the Osterlin Library

A big THANK YOU to everyone who participated in the NMC Giving Tree program, which helped provide gifts for 49 students and their family members. 183 In all, we helped 49 families totaling 183 people, 139 of whom were children.

**WELLNESS, IT’S A CHOICE**

Wellness can be defined as an active process through which we become aware of and make choices toward a more successful existence. Wellness is a positive approach to living that emphasizes the whole person – the integration of the body, mind and spirit; and the appreciation that everything we do, think, feel and believe has an impact on our state of health.

As a part of embracing a culture of wellness at NMC, your Wellness Committee plans to provide weekly information and tips for healthy living – presented in a lively and engaging format. We’d like to start with a short YouTube presentation by Dr. Mike Evans. Called “23 1/2 Hours;” it addresses one lifestyle change that can enhance the quality of your life the most. Enjoy!http://www.youtube.com/user/DocMikeEvans#p/a/u/0/aUaInS6HIGo

ACTION PLAN IN PROCESS

Over the past five months, President’s Council, Planning & Budget Council and the Leadership Group with the help of the Office of Research, Planning & Effectiveness (ORPE), have been working hard to implement the work of the Alignment of Planning Action Project team. This work began in August 2011 with the Grasp the Situation work, moved into the development of Strategic Outcomes and Strategic Goals, and lead to eight Board approved Strategic Goals for FY’12 and FY’13 at the November Board meeting. We now have a Strategic Plan that moves us further along in our ability to take action on our Strategic Directions and Institutional Effectiveness Criteria.

On December 9, the Leadership Group engaged in a work session whereby we turned from strategic to operational planning. Department leads will be engaging their teams in the process of developing Operational Plan A3’s for 2012-13. These plans will be due January 30, 2012. Additional materials on the planning process, including templates and key strategy documents, are available on the new ORPE intranet site and can be accessed at: intranet.nmc.edu/depts/orpe/planning/index.html

We’ll be checking and adjusting the process as we go: If you have feedback or input at any time, please feel free to send your thoughts to Karen Ruedinger at kruedinger@nmc.edu.

ACCREDITATION VISIT UPDATE

In preparation for our January 25-27 visit by a Higher Learning Commission (HLC) review team, we were required to submit two pre-work documents titled the Federal Compliance Report and the Quality Program Summary. These were released on December 14. You can access the documents on the IR website located here: www.nmc.edu/ir/accreditation/index.html under the Check Up Visit by HLC portion of the table.

The public comment period continues to run through December 25, 2011. Additional information about the process for commenting about NMC directly to the HLC is available on the website located here: www.nmc.edu/news/ (see blue panel on the right).
