Grand Traverse area girls will learn how to make strides in non-traditional careers at the thirteenth annual GirlTECH Friday, November 21, 2014 at NMC’s Parsons-Stulen Building.
GirlTECH was developed to encourage high school girls enrolled in any Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District school to consider non-traditional careers, defined as those careers in which women comprise 25 percent or less of the workforce.
Multiple speakers will discuss their career paths network with students. Non-traditional students from NMC and the TBA Career-Tech Center will present students with information about local training programs for high school junior and seniors and NMC programs.
Event sponsors include NMC, the American Association of University Women, Traverse Bay Area Career-Tech Center, Benzie Area Zonta Club and the Zonta Club of Leelanau County.

TRAVERSE CITY — NMC will host an open house for prospective students interested in a new, short-format ROV pilot technician certificate program at 6 p.m. Nov. 18 in the Parsons-Stulen Building on the Aero Park campus.
Classes for the ten-week program begin Jan. 12. Students will learn the basic skills and competencies required to gain entry-level employment in the offshore marine industry as a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Pilot Technician. Graduates of the program will find:
- Global opportunities for employment in an extremely fast growing industry
- Immediate industry interviews on site upon successful completion (presently scheduled for March 19-20, 2015)
- Starting salaries range from $40,000–$50,000 with excellent benefit packages
- Applied training in electronics, hydraulics, safety, and mechanical/ROV systems
- Industry-aligned curriculum following International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) guidelines included in IMCA R 002 and IMCA R 004 standard
Highly-trained instructors have experience in the industry. Training competencies can be applied toward credit at NMC for completion of Marine Technology degrees. Prospective students must be able to obtain a U.S. passport and Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card prior to enrollment.
