Employee Wellness: Step Challenge complete (look how far we walked together!)

A huge thank you and congratulations to everyone who laced up their sneakers and stepped up to NMC’s Step Challenge! Over the course of the challenge, your energy, determination and friendly competition made this event a resounding success.

Whether you were taking quick walk breaks during the workday, logging miles on the weekend or pacing during conference calls, every single step added up to an unbelievable team milestone.

The Final Breakdown

  • 60 participants stepped up and logged their movement.
  • 33 employees officially crossed the finish line and met the challenge goal!
  • 8,864,884 total steps were recorded

Together, our combined efforts added up to 4,432 miles! To put that distance into perspective, that is longer than walking across the entire United States from coast to coast with over 1,000 miles to spare!

Keep the Momentum Going

The challenge may be over, but the habit doesn’t have to be. Let’s keep moving! Thank you for making this challenge a huge success and for taking nearly 9 million steps forward together!

Aurora to perform Veterans Day concert Nov. 11

NMC Aurora Veterans Day flyerCelebrate America’s 250th birthday and honor our veterans with Aurora, NMC’s treble choir formerly known as Chamber Singers. Selected from thousands of entrants to perform at the American Choral Directors Association National Conference in March, Aurora is preparing for this prestigious opportunity by sharing its music with the community. The performance will feature patriotic music, American folk songs and the world premiere of American Mosaic, a new work composed by NMC Music Director Jeffrey Cobb, with text by Laura Knight Cobb. The piece celebrates three remarkable women who helped shape our nation: Sacagawea, Helen Keller and Sojourner Truth. Works by Dolly Parton, Palestrina and Brahms will also be included.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 11, in the newly renovated sanctuary at Central United Methodist Church, 222 Cass Street in Traverse City. A free-will offering will be accepted at the door.

Make a difference, one piece of litter at a time

We all play a role in creating a welcoming campus for our students, colleagues and community. Help keep NMC looking its best: if you see litter, take a moment to pick it up and dispose of it properly. Small actions make a difference, and together, we can take pride in the spaces we share.

Rogers Observatory celebrates 45 years, college’s 75th

TRAVERSE CITY — NMC’s Rogers Observatory will hold a special public viewing night in honor of its 45th anniversary and the college’s 75th from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17.

The observatory dome will be open and telescopes available for public viewing. Refreshments will also be available.

Located at 1753 Birmley Road, Rogers Observatory opened in 1981. It was founded and constructed completely from public donations, the result of a tireless effort by  instructor the late Joseph H. Rogers to build a permanent home for what had been NMC’s “portable” telescope. Two local property owners each donate 2.5 acres for the Observatory on land with a 250’ elevation above the surrounding property. Some forty-plus businesses and 106 individuals contributed money, materials and labor to construct the observatory.

More than 100,000 community members have visited for regular public viewing nights as well as for special celestial events like comets Hale-Bopp and Hyakutake in 1996. The observatory hosted its largest crowds in August 2003, when Mars made its closest approach to Earth in more than 50,000 years.
