Veterans creative writing workshop

TRAVERSE CITY — A creative writing workshop for veterans will again be offered in spring semester, with regular monthly meetings held from 10 a.m. to noon the third Friday of the month  in Scholars Hall room 101. Future meetings will be held March 20 and April 17.

In addition, open office hours will be offered to veterans weekly, from 3 to 4 p.m. every Wednesday in Scholars Hall room 102. Veterans can get writing support for academic writing assignments or other writing projects.

Kavran, ChristopherChristopher Kavran joined NMC as the Lead Accounting Assistant on February 10, 2015. He can be reached at (231) 995-2320 or ckavran@nmc.edu.

Chris was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio.  He met his wife, Jennifer, while they were both finishing their Bachelors’ degrees at Eastern Michigan University (BBA in Accounting for Chris.)  They moved to Traverse City in 2005 after Jennifer completed her Veterinary studies at Michigan State University. Chris worked in the accounting departments for health care, automotive, child care, and most recently financial institutions.  His position for the last eight and a half years was with 4Front Credit Union (formerly Members Credit Union) before joining the college.  Chris enjoy reading, music, and movies in his free time.  He stays active by kayaking, hiking, snowshoeing, and practicing Judo here at NMC.  In addition, he also volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Michigan. NMC Technology Help Desk- Tech tips: Switching between Google Drive and Microsoft Office

Technology grows and adapts at a staggering rate, and as such so does the interaction between office programs. For years Microsoft office was the automatic choice for word processing, image displays, presentations and spreadsheets for the vast majority of users, and while it is still important, there are unique and widely used advantages in using the Google Office equivalent as well. The interaction between the two is very different and as such it is beneficial to know how to go back and forth between the two. (more…)

Nominate today, the Foundation Excellence Awards deadline is March 13

Honor hardworking instructors or colleagues by nominating them for a Foundation Excellence Award.

The NMC Foundation Excellence Awards promote exemplary service to students and clients and recognize the outstanding demonstration of NMC’s values. Multiple awards are granted annually and the recipients are announced at the annual service awards reception in April. All college employees are eligible for this award — regular and adjunct faculty, and staff. (more…)

Innovation Grant Award winners announced

Ten NMC faculty will be pioneers in a new effort to bring down the cost of college by using freely available online educational resources instead of traditional textbooks for their classes in the fall.  The NMC Foundation’s Innovation Grant will fund stipends in the form of a new iPad or $500.  (more…)

Ninth annual Career Fair at the Hagerty Center on March 5

Students and the public are invited to NMC’s ninth annual Career Fair, set for 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. March 5 at the Hagerty Center on NMC’s Great Lakes Campus.

Employers from professional and occupational fields will be recruiting for career-track positions, seasonal and entry-level opportunities, as well as internships, service learning and networking opportunities. (more…)

February Wellness Sleep Challenge reminder

Adequate sleep is another step you can take to combat serious health issues. Commit to get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night during the month of February (and beyond). Keep track of the number of days you were able to reach your sleep goal (7 to 8 hours/night) and submit the total to Marcia Talicska at mtalicska@nmc.edu by 3/5/15.
