From February 29–March 31, Northwestern Michigan College is conducting an online survey about what you watch on TV, what you listen to on the radio, what you read in print or online, and the ways you prefer to be contacted with new information. The survey instructions say that it takes 15-20 minutes to complete, but smart people like you will probably finish it in 10 minutes or so. Everyone who completes the survey will be entered into a drawing to win a $150 Amazon.com gift card. Not bad for 10 minutes of work, right?
So what is NMC going to do with the information?
Well, we’re not going to share it with other colleges or businesses or anybody else. So you don’t have to worry about filling out this survey and getting a bunch of junk mail or e-mails because of it. What we are going to use it for is to do a better job of reaching people like you. It will help us learn more about what you watch and where you hang out and if you’d rather receive e-mails or texts or stuff in the mail.
How many times can I take the survey?
You can take it as many times as you want, but the survey’s pretty smart, so no matter how many times you take it, you’re only going to be entered to win the gift card once.
What if part of the survey doesn’t apply to me?
You don’t have to answer every question, but you do have to make it to the end of the survey to be entered to win. So if there is a question that doesn’t apply to you, you can just move on to the next one.
Where do I go to take the survey?
Just follow this link and use michigan as the password. It’s just that easy.
So thanks in advance for taking the survey, and good luck on winning the gift card!

Grace Reinhold, a 2008 graduate of Traverse City Central High School, has been named the fall 2011 winner of the John Pahl Literary Prize at NMC.
Reinhold’s short story, “Peacock in the Gift Shop” written for her English 221 Creative Writing class taught by Pahl, was judged as the best student fiction submitted as a class assignment, published in the White Pine Press or in the NMC Magazine.
Reinhold, 22, of Acme, credits her mother with convincing her to pursue her writing talents. “Peacock in a Gift Shop” is the story of how a boy assigned to community service at a zoo is changed by the experience. Reinhold said she wrote the story after writing several other “depressing” stories about female characters, and deciding she wanted to write “an inspirational story about a male character.” Her former ambition to be a veterinarian also works into the plot. She now hopes to pursue writing, perhaps at the University of Texas.
The prize was established in 2007 by regional historian Kathleen Firestone, a former student of Pahl’s, to inspire and reward NMC students for good writing. Pahl is NMC’s longest-tenured instructor, with more than 40 years on the faculty. The prize is awarded to a work of fiction and a work of non-fiction in alternate semesters. Donations to the prize fund — as well as all NMC scholarships — are accepted online at www.nmc.edu/give.

After college, I spent nearly four years in Plymouth, Michigan working as the Database Administrator for Container and Pooling Solutions, a Brambles Company. Submit kudos at: www.nmc.edu/departments/human-resources/kudos.html
To Ann Dane, Scott Herzberg, Elizabeth Stevens, Kim Gourlay, Kelly Carlton, Georgenia Hromada, Debra Marx, Jessica Johnson, Chris Horvath, Heather Hale, Linda Berlin and Julie McAllister, who graciously volunteered to give up a Saturday to assist students and their families at the NMC Fabulous FAFSA Saturday workshop. This event was designed to help future and current students complete the Free Application for Federal Aid (FASFA) for the upcoming year.
To Judy Arnold for assisting students and their families after-hours at pre-arranged workshops with the FAFSA process.
To Linda Berlin who coordinated all the Financial Aid February events. She arranged for the volunteers, signage, etc., to insure we had a great event. In addition, she assisted students and their families after-hours at other pre-arranged workshops with the FAFSA process.
To Lori Hodek, Kristal Nolf, Lisa Molmen, Paul Martin, Bryce Turner, Allison Geisert, Kelly Zimmerman for launching Red Carpet, NMC’s new Orientation Software. They all put forth a lot of time and effort with a “let’s get it done!” spirit to meet deadlines. Kudos also to the countless others who pitched in to make this Orientation process more welcoming and effective for our new employees: Advising, Purchasing, Facilities, Tech Services, Educational Media Technologies, Office Managers…kudos to All!
To Linda Glaesmer who does a great job as liaison between the custodians and Central Scheduling, always taking the time to read work orders for the custodians and catches anything that is not clear or incorrect. Linda is very good to work with. I don’t lose sleep wondering if a set up will be over looked. I can always count on her.
To Nicholeen Frusti who initiated and graciously set up each of our Upward Bound students with the PLATO software program, and compassionately provided an orientation for the students. Her expertise, combined with her personal stories, helped the students further understand the power and importance of education… and the importance of achieving their potential.
To Capt. Michael Surgalski upon his appointment as a Captain in the United States Maritime Service.
To Bob Mason who was awarded the prestigious Merchant Marine Award for Outstanding Achievement Medal.
