Have you ever wanted a classroom of one? Consider being a Big Brother or Big Sister mentor to a child. There are no tests to administer, no assignments to grade – just a child waiting for a friend.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is seeking volunteers for its community- and school-based mentoring programs. Men: you’re ESPECIALLY needed, as the boys on our waitlists for a mentor are ever-increasing.
“Michigan Meetings and Events Magazine” is currently conducting their ninth annual Readers’ Choice “Best of Awards”. This year’s winners will be announced in the Summer 2014 Issue. Traverse City properties and suppliers were well represented and won several of the “Best of Categories” over the past few years because you made your choices known.
The Hagerty Center has won “Best Meeting & Event Venue, Outside Detroit Metro Area” twice in the past three years. Our northwest Michigan region has many outstanding properties and venues that should be recognized again in 2014. Recognition of our NMC operations, as well as any of the area properties/venues, enhances the image of Northwestern Michigan College and the entire Traverse City destination.
The following employees are celebrating an anniversary soon. Please join us in congratulating them!

Northwestern Michigan College President Timothy J. Nelson:
It is with sadness that I share with you news the death of Shirley Okerstrom.
Shirley played a pivotal role in the life of Northwestern Michigan College, serving on the NMC Board of Trustees for 22 years, as the Board’s liaison to the NMC Foundation for 14 years and as a Foundation Board member for eight years. Her dedication was particularly directed to the Dennos Museum Center, and she also served on the Cultivation Committee for the Great Lakes Campus Campaign.
Recognition of her talents and service can be found in the naming of the Fine Arts Building in her honor and the 2004 installation of the Nexus sculpture. She received the college’s highest honor in 2003 as she was named a Fellow and also received the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award in 1999.
