NMC Magazine’s Student Editor-in-Chief Anjanette Merriweather and
Literary Editor Brittany Erickson, along with faculty advisors
Caroline Schaefer and John Pahl, received a Special Award at the
annual NMEAC Environmentalist of the Year Awards. The Special Award
recognized the NMC Magazine and these four individuals for the fall
issue, dedicated to the theme of “Thrivability” in our region’s
natural environment, our city and wider community, and on campus.
NMEAC created a new category for this and future awards: Student
Journalism and Communication.
Northern Michigan Environmental Action Council, founded in 1980, held
its award banquet on April 27 at the Park Place Hotel. In its 24th
year, the event recognizes the accomplishments of individuals,
governmental agencies, and non-profit organizations in helping
preserve the quality of our region’s natural environment and
increasing public awareness of environmental issues.
Anjanette Merriweather, who is among the students speaking at the
coming TEDx event, will be graduating from NMC’s Visual Communication
Program this month and moving to Denver to start her career. Brittany
Erickson is also graduating from NMC this spring, after which she will
transfer to Michigan Technological University to major in biology and
psychology. Both are Honors Students.

The White Pine Press staff earned numerous editorial and design awards at the Michigan Community College Press Association annual conference held April 21 at Central Michigan University. We spent the day on campus meeting other student journalists and learning from top state and national journalists. We are so very proud of the staff, which took First Place in General Excellence and First Place in Overall Newspaper Design, among other awards. Please join me in congratulating this year’s White Pine Press staff.

There is good news to report to all who have been anticipating the progress from the duck’s nest located at the entry of the Dennos Museum Center. On Friday evening (4/27/12) Stephen and Carolyn Drake observed the mother duck safely leading the ten ducklings to Scholars Hall where they will be educated properly in reading and writing. The mother patiently waited until the last duckling negotiated the parking lot curbing before moving onward to Scholars Hall. NMC has always attracted “those” who have direction and are persistent.

Bob and Hilary James – Chuck and Lizzy Loeb in a Fathers and Daughters concert on Saturday May 5, at 8 PM in Milliken Auditorium. Traverse City’s own Grammy Award winning jazz legend Bob James, and founding member of the super group Fourplay, along with the newest band member, internationally renowned guitarist Chuck Loeb come together on the Milliken stage to close our 20th anniversary season featuring their daughters Hilary and Lizzy, who are accomplished vocalists in their own right.
Bob James (www.bobjames.com) has had a long career as a noted jazz pianist performing around the world. Traverse City fans will remember his appearance on the Milliken stage with his daughter, Hilary, after the release of their CD Flesh and Blood in 1995. The CD is being re-released by Tappan Zee Records in association with the upcoming May 5 concert and will be available that evening. Bob has been an ongoing favorite performer on the Milliken stage bringing many unique concert programs to Milliken over the years.
Chuck Loeb (www.chuckloeb.com) Chuck Loeb (wwwchcha renowned jazz guitarist, composer, arranger, producer, educator and recording artist became part of Fourplay in 2010. His daughter Lizzy (www.lizzyloeb.com) is a singer, songwriter and guitarist with a successful career of her own performing both in the US and Europe.
“We are pleased to present these two proud fathers on our stage with their talented daughters,” says Gene Jenneman, Museum Director, “Bob never fails to bring a special program to our concert series and this is the perfect father/daughter event; one which I hope will find many fathers and daughters together in the audience.”

Last year the FBI identified a group of international hackers who were “running an Internet ad scam on a massive network of home computers.” The FBI has since shut down the operation and realized that they could not just pull the plug on all of the infected users. So, they are encouraging home PC users to visit a website run by its security partner to see if their home computer is infected. Please take a moment before July 9, and read the article below. The NMC Wellness Olympics registration has been extended to May 1, 2012.
You can sign up for both or only one of the two-parts: Olympic Training and Olympic Events.
Olympic Training
During Olympic Training participants will keep track of points through an online form. 15 minutes of exercise = 1 point. Because we know that NMC staff are trustworthy, they will self report the week of the exercise. As well, participants will determine if they are a “Veteran Olympian” (currently exercising 3x per week) or “Amateur Olympian” (currently exercising less than 2x per week).
Olympic Events
A variety of events will be occurring during the Olympics (July 27-August 12). These events are still to be determined.

- Vance Packard, author of Hidden Persuaders, and The Status Seekers, spoke as part of an NMC sponsored Celebrity Lecture Series. He says we must “depend less on technology.”
- The college held its annual Spring Formal dance at the Traverse City Country Club, with over 100 couples in attendance.
25 Years Ago:
- Employees of the Semester: Rochelle Hammontree was named for February and Connie Jason for March (see photos below).
- NMC Karate Club won many awards including the Grand Master title at a local tournament.
10 Years Ago:
- NMC received a $8.13 million grant to help fund redevelopment of the West Bay Campus. Rotary pledged $500,000 with stipulation of matching funds by June, 2002.
