During one of the busiest times of the year, almost 100 instructors and staff gave extra time to learn about the new features of Moodle 2. Some stayed past the scheduled training time and asked additional questions and worked on course improvements. Thank you to our dedicated instructors and staff!
To Dot Witt who willingly stepped in to assist the Central Scheduling office. Dot worked twice a week at central scheduling office to allow their staff dedicated time to document their procedures. Her assistance is a prime example of talent being applied as needed across the organization.

Dawn and her husband, Ken, moved from New Baltimore to Traverse City last August. Prior to moving to TC, she worked for General Motors Legal Staff at the Renaissance Center in Detroit. Her hobbies include exploring the beautiful Traverse City area, cooking, boating and reading.
The Three Generations Circle of Women Givers, established in 2001 to promote the economic self-sufficiency and well being of women and girls, awarded the NMC Bridge Learning Community $1,400 for its fall semester to be given as the Bridge Circle Scholar Award to students who earn a 3.5 GPA or above in their first semester of college. Bridge is the only community program that has received this grant yearly since the group’s inception. Charlene Lutes, Bridge Director, will accept the award on June 1 at a special luncheon at noon at the Holiday Inn featuring U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow who will be speaking about “Standing Together for Women’s Health, Safety and Economic Well-Being.”
Calling all NMC employees interested in participating in this year’s annual Smart Commute Week – save money, increase your physical activity, enjoy free breakfasts, and build camaraderie with others in the community. Organizations compete for highest participation during Smart Commute week. There’s a chance to win prizes, and you get to take advantage of the Smart Commute breakfasts on your way to work!
Smart Commute Week, which is part of TART Trails’ year-round Smart Commute Program, educates and encourages everyone in the community to consider options for getting around town. TART Trails challenges you to walk, bike, carpool, ride public transit or any creative form of ‘smart’ transportation!
Participation is easy:
• Send an email to myoung@nmc.edu by Friday, May 25 indicating you would like to join the NMC Smart Commute Team
• Each morning, June 4-7, email me your Smart Commute miles (to and from work) and transportation methods (i.e. carpool, bike, walk)
• Can’t commit to Smart Commuting all 4 days? Don’t let that stop you from signing up!
• Friday’s Smart Commute miles will not count toward our team totals but everyone is encouraged to attend the breakfast and finish the week in grand Smart Commute fashion!

Cindy Duby, Office Manager – Social Sciences Academic Area, has been selected as the NMC Employee of the Semester for spring 2012. Cindy is pictured receiving the award from Social Science instructor Sean Ruane and NMC President Timothy J. Nelson.
Cindy’s colleagues cite her great attitude, dedication and expertise as the “glue that binds us all together.”
For being selected as the Employee of the Semester, Cindy received a framed certificate, a $25 gift certificate to a local restaurant, and a reserved parking spot for fall semester.

Gale Cook began her position of Operations Manager for the Dennos Museum Center on May 16, 2012. Gale can be reached at 995-1595 or gacook@nmc.edu.
Gale says, “I moved to Traverse City from Cincinnati in 1996 and worked as a Development Specialist in the NMC College Relations Office until 2001. My most recent employer was TREATickets from 2009-May 2012 where I served as Managing Director. The Dennos Museum was one of TREAT’s founding organizations. My husband, Jerry Cook, also is an NMC employee. We have two sons; Justin is a firefighter in Honolulu, HI and Brad is a CNA at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. We have three adorable grandsons: a ten-year-old and a three-year-old (and another one the way) in Honolulu and a nine-month old in Traverse City. My hobbies include gardening, reading, and traveling (mostly to Hawaii).
I am very happy to be back at NMC as Operations Manager for the Dennos Museum. I look forward to working with all of the people who were here my first time around and to meeting everyone who has been hired since.”

Nine and Ten news did a story Wednesday on the two week Great Lakes Research Technology course being offered through NMC’s Great Lakes Water Studies Institute.
Business instructor Kristy McDonald is NMC’s 2012 Imogene Wise Faculty Excellence Award winner. Maritime instructor John Biolchini is the 2012 Adjunct Faculty Excellence Award winner.
Chosen by a student selection committee, award criteria includes teaching excellence, rapport with students, innovation in the classroom and a sense of dedication. McDonald began working in NMC’s Career Services office in 2006 and moved to the faculty in 2011. Biolchini joined the Maritime program in 2007.
In nominating McDonald, students said:
McDonald said she was particularly gratified by comments like the latter.
“It takes it outside of the academic lens,” she said. “We do more than that at NMC. We touch people’s lives in so many ways we don’t even know it.”
In nominating Biolchini, students said:
“This award is really their award,” Biolchini said of the Maritime cadets. “The students have to give you the opportunity to teach at your peak.”
The Imogene Wise Faculty Excellence Award was initiated by a contribution from longtime NMC benefactors Harold and Imogene Wise in 1970 and first awarded to a full-time faculty member in 1971. The NMC Adjunct Faculty Excellence Award was created as a companion in 1999.
Alumni from three different decades have been named as NMC’s 2012 Outstanding Alumni.
The three are:
Created in 1988, the Outstanding Alumnus award recognizes alumni for professional achievement, community and professional leadership and/or donations of time, talent and resources to NMC. The three were named the 2012 recipients at NMC’s annual Commencement ceremony on May 5.
McManus, of Traverse City, said she considers her nursing education and the patient care she went on to do post-graduation “foundational” to the leadership position she now holds.
“There have been so many experiences associated with having that good foundational work,” she said, adding that growing up with four other siblings in a single-income household, simply having NMC accessible was a critical starting point for her career. “Then you could use that as your platform,” she said.
As an alumnus, McManus has served on NMC’s nursing advisory board. She and Munson have also actively supported NMC’s advocacy for legislation to allow Michigan community colleges to offer baccalaureate degrees in nursing.
Rawlings, of Kingsley, is a second-generation NMC student. After earning an aviation degree at NMC, he pursued his bachelor’s at Ferris State University through the University Center, and then earned a master’s from Michigan State. He now serves as regional manager of corporate and government affairs for DTE Energy.
“NMC has just as rigorous and challenging, if not even more challenging classes than either of the universities I’ve attended,” Rawlings said.
In his capacity at DTE Rawlings has secured corporate support for NMC’s Water Studies program, the Dennos Museum Center, and scholarships and programs. He is halfway through a two-year commitment as co-chair of NMC’s Annual Campaign.
“I take the community service seriously, and I’m very grateful I have an employer that not only encourages its employees to become engaged but supports its employees to connect with the communities in which we live,” he said.
Young, of Honor, recalled being enrolled at the University of Detroit school of architecture when he decided he didn’t really want to study architecture.
“What I really got out of NMC was a space to grow and mature,” Young said. While he went on to study internationally and earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree, “I look back most fondly at NMC as the most formative years of my life.” He founded Food for Thought in 1995 and is extensively involved in humanitarian and environmental activism.
Young is currently a member of both NMC’s Foundation Board and Barbecue Board. Three years ago, he was among the leaders of a move to initiate composting at the annual NMC Barbecue and significantly increase recycling.
Thank you so much to the wonderful NMC family for all of the
expressions of support that Tom and I have received this week on the
death of Tom’s mother, Mary. Knowing that we have so many caring
people around us has helped us greatly.
