Hi NMC!
Pure Michigan needs your help in shooting a new TV ad highlighting beautiful Traverse City!
Crews will be holding an open casting call in the West Hall conference room tomorrow (Wednesday) from 1-3 p.m.
Everyone is welcome (students, faculty and staff). Dress casually. No headshot or picture required.
Crews will be back in town September 10-11th for filming. If you are chosen for the spot, you will be paid $150.
If you can’t make the casting call and still want a chance to be in the TV ad, email your picture and contact information to igroup@theigroup.com. Please put “Traverse City” in the subject line.

The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present the International Society of Experimental Artists 24th Annual Art Exhibition from September 20 – November 29, 2015.
Since its inception in 1991, the International Society of Experimental Artists (ISEA) has hosted an annual art exhibit with work submitted from around the world. Works are selected by leading art authorities from thousands of submissions representing experimental techniques and attitudes. The ISEA Art Exhibit has become not only a showcase for ground-breaking art but also a vivid testimonial to the value and importance of exploring new avenues in a variety of media. (more…)

The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present the exhibition Copper Thunderbird: Works by Norval Morrisseau from the Museum’s Collection September 20 – November 29, 2015.
Norval Morrisseau, (March 14, 1932 – December 4, 2007), was an artist known by many names and phrases. Born Jean-Baptiste Norman Henry Morrisseau, he was given the name Copper Thunderbird during an Anishinaabe renaming ceremony meant to cure him from illness when he was 19. After establishing his visionary style of the Woodland School of Art, some referred to Morrisseau as the “Picasso of the North.” With thick black lines and bright interior patterns, Morrisseau’s artwork was at first inspired by the many myths and legends of his Ojibwe culture. Later in life, the artist incorporated his personal struggles and religious imagery. As recognition for his work grew, Morrisseau became a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Art and the Order of Canada. In 2005, he became the first native artist to have a solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada. (more…)

The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present the exhibition Liu Bolin – Hiding in Plain Sight from September 20 – November 29, 2015.
Liu Bolin (Chinese, b. 1973) is a contemporary artist whose has gained an international reputation by painting himself into his surrounding environment. In recent years he has traveled the world blending into the background of the place he finds himself at the time, from graffiti in New York City to cathedrals in Europe. (more…)

Madonna Walters
Run Before the Wind

A new large scale art banner featuring the work of Madonna Walters will be installed by Britten Studios on September 3, 2015 (subject to change) at 310 West Front Street in Traverse City. The banner is produced from her original painting entitled Run Before the Wind.
Madonna Walters is an artist from the Traverse City area known for her large color-field abstract paintings. She is a former art student of Northwestern Michigan College (NMC), where she trained with Paul Welch, Norm Averill, and Jack Ozegovic. Madonna now lives and works in Ann Arbor, but her roots are in Leelanau County, where she was raised on the family farm, and where she found her earliest inspiration to paint. “I think it was the combination of enormous open spaces and the relentless power of Lake Michigan, the lakeshore, and the ever-present wind that imprinted my psyche and my paintings,” says Madonna. Northwestern Michigan College has launched a new, more responsive website to showcase the college’s major programs and success stories. The site also works better on the wide variety of devices used by today’s students, staff, alumni and community members, including smartphones, tablets and larger computer screens.
The new look was designed by NMC’s Public Relations, Marketing & Communications department and developed by Flight Path Creative, which provided technical and implementation services. The site’s streamlined home page showcases unique college programs and also features a new color palette more reflective of NMC’s campuses and the natural environment of the Grand Traverse region.
The three-month process included focus group meetings with potential and current students, discussing how to make the site most user-friendly for them.
Northwestern Michigan College is a publicly funded community college that serves more than 50,000 people, organizations and businesses annually throughout the Grand Traverse region and beyond. NMC offers associate’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees through the Great Lakes Maritime Academy and Great Lakes Water Studies Institute, professional certificates, and an extensive array of non-credit community classes. NMC also is home to the Dennos Museum Center, Hagerty Conference Center, WNMC 90.7 FM Community Radio, and the NMC University Center, whose eight partner universities grant baccalaureate, graduate and doctoral degrees.

NMC Parking permits are now available in the Admissions office, Cashiers/Records and Registration office in the Tanis building. All cars parked in NMC lots must have an NMC parking permit affixed to the lower left side of the windshield by September 28, 2015. Please be sure to remove past NMC parking decals.

Come celebrate all things wonderful at college! Enjoy free food and live music while learning about many of our student organizations, campus resources, and community collaborators. Join us for the 8th annual Pine Palooza student fair on Tuesday, September 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the green between East and West Halls.
In addition to the annual photobooth and henna artist, this year the event will feature live music by Kalamazoo based band, Medicinal Groove, and a series of workshops in the kinetic arts (juggling, hoop and poi) by local performance troupe, Third Space Movement. (more…)

Alex Bondar will be a junior at Western Michigan University in the fall of 2015. She earned her associate’s degree from NMC in general studies and hopes to receive a degree from Western in education with a focus in English.
Throughout the years, Northwestern Michigan College has gained popularity for being a ground-breaking community college. Offering four-year degrees, having maritime, aviation, and culinary programs, and even being the number one community college in the state for amount of study abroad trips. NMC has a lot to offer a student! But, it doesn’t stop there; now, the Office of International Services and Service Learning has created an opportunity for students to become more globally competent – the Global Endorsement. And I had the pleasure of receiving my GE during my last year at NMC. (more…)

NMC students will be welcomed back to campus the weekend of Friday, August 28 through Sunday, August 30 with a series of free events including a showing of Jurassic World at the Milliken Auditorium, an ice cream social after the movie, a beach barbecue and bowling. See the full list of events below.
Friday, August 28, 2015
- 9 a.m.–4 p.m.: Move-in for East Hall students (East Hall)
East Hall residents check in begins in the East Hall lobby.
- 9 a.m.–3 p.m.: Faculty and Staff helps East Hall students move-in.
Volunteers please meet at the blue tent in front of East Hall ten minutes before your shift.
- 6–8 p.m.: Mandatory meetings for East Hall residents (West Hall cafeteria)
East Hall residents please read the signage on your floor in reference to your respective meeting.
- 8–10:30 p.m.: showing of Jurassic World at Milliken Auditorium
All NMC students and guests are welcome to watch the movie. Please do not bring any food or drinks into the Milliken Auditorium.
- 10:15–11 p.m.: Ice Cream Social after the movie
Ratio Christi will sponsor an ice cream social in the museum foyer free to all NMC students and guests.

Please stop in to the NMC bookstore to get last-minute school items.
- 10 a.m.–3 p.m.: Get Your NMC ID (upper level of West Hall)
Please stop by the West Hall Security Office to pick up your NMC student or residential facility ID.
- 10 a.m.–4 p.m.: Dennos Museum Tour
Door prizes and activities for NMC students. Free admission for all guests with a valid NMC ID.
- 11 a.m.–Noon: BATA (Bay Area Transportation Authority) (HS 101)
Students will learn how to navigate the BATA public transportation system in Traverse City and get student discounts for using their services.
- 11 a.m.–3 p.m.: East Hall late check-ins (East Hall)
East Hall residents arriving on this date are asked to check in at the East Hall lobby.
- 12:20–1 p.m.: Oryana (HS 100)
Students will learn the benefits of healthy eating and how to prepare meals on a budget.
- 1–3 p.m.: Game of Life (HS 101)
NMC Financial Services will host a game of life activity where students can win prizes and learn financial literacy information.
- 4–7 p.m.: Fun on the beach at (Bryant Park)
His House and International Student Club will host a barbecue at the beach for all NMC students. Free food and activities will be provided.
Sunday, August 30, 2015
- 1:30–3:30 p.m. Find my class (East Hall fishbowl)
Residential Life staff will be taking students on a main campus tour to find classes located on NMC main campus.
- 3:30–5:30 p.m. Family Feud Event (HS 101)
Phi Theta Kappa will be hosting an event for students to learn successful student strategies. Prizes will be given away during the event.
- 5:30–7 p.m. Fun on the lawn (behind East Hall on the athletic fields), sports, games, crafts, etc…
His House, Ratio Christi and Residence life will provide activities for NMC students and guests.
- 8–11 p.m.: Bowling at Lucky Jacks
Student Life and Residential Life will provide free bowling to NMC students.
All events are free to NMC students with a valid NMC Residence Hall, Hawk’s Nest or Student ID.
