Planning to transfer after NMC? Meet with a university advisor during Transfer Tuesdays! Held weekly on Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Health Science Lobby, advisors from colleges at NMC’s University Center including Central Michigan, Davenport, Ferris State, Grand Valley, Michigan State, Spring Arbor, and Western Michigan University will be on hand. The Traverse City Parking Patrol will begin issuing citations for parking violations at NMC on Tuesday, September 4. All faculty, staff and students must have their 2018-2019 permits displayed by that date.
The Traverse City Police Department has provided the following information on how to avoid parking tickets on campus by properly displaying your parking permit:
If you do get a ticket, payment can be made at the red drop-off payment box at the east end of the Cedar lot in front of the Health & Science Building on main campus. You can also mail the fine in to the city, or pay at the parking services office in the public parking garage at 303 E. State St. Payment information is also on each ticket.

Celebrate the rise of visual arts in the Grand Traverse Region and the legacy and rich history of the NMC Art Department in the reformatted second edition of this retrospective, A Colorful Cast.
Stewarded by Paul Welch and Ann Swaney and authored by Heather Shumaker, A Colorful Cast highlights the men and women who created a wave of visual arts in the Grand Traverse Region and celebrates the role that NMC and its Fine Arts Department played in building regional interest in visual arts. The galleries, the studios, and the festivals that now draw thousands to our region, all were influenced by the vibrant learning environment of the College and the artists who have gathered and learned here.
Copies of A Colorful Cast are $29.95 and are available at the Dennos Museum gift shop, Horizon Books in downtown Traverse City, Twisted Fish Gallery in Elk Rapids, and through the NMC Foundation by calling (231) 995-1021. Proceeds from the sale of A Colorful Cast will go to support visual arts scholarships at Northwestern Michigan College.

TRAVERSE CITY — Northwestern Michigan College has welcomed a record number of international students for its 2018 summer aviation program.
The group includes 32 students from 17 different countries including Malaysia, Nigeria, China, India, Lithuania, Thailand, Bangladesh, Portugal, Italy, Kenya, United Kingdom, Russia, Ukraine, Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Ecuador and Uganda.
The students are studying Aerospace Engineering at three main NMC partner universities in the United Kingdom: University of Hertfordshire, University of the West of England and University of Manchester.
This partnership began in 2009 with an Innovation Grant from the NMC Foundation as a way to boost enrollment to the aviation program during the often slower summer season. Since its beginning, the international partnership has brought in an additional $2.5 million and increased the financial viability of the aviation program.
According to NMC’s International Aviation Program Coordinator, Steve Ursell, the greatest benefits are to the students: “This fantastic diverse group really contributes to the atmosphere and training of all of our students and instructors whether they’re from Traverse City or Thailand. They bring a new perspective, experience and cultural understanding to our flight school that helps prepare our students for careers that may take them around the world.”
This partnership is another example of NMC leveraging its unique assets to provide mutual benefit, says NMC Director of Aviation Alex Bloye: “NMC has been a trusted partner with these universities. We’ve worked with them to design specific flight training and flight test courses that add valuable practical flying experience to the aerospace theory courses offered in the United Kingdom.”
International aviation students must go through a TSA and Visa approval process, overseen by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, to be able to train at NMC. This process starts almost nine months before students arrive at NMC..

TRAVERSE CITY — During its regular June 25 monthly meeting, the Board of Trustees for Northwestern Michigan College unanimously approved a balanced budget and set tuition rates and fees for the fall 2018 and spring/summer 2019 semesters.
General tuition rates for residents will increase by $2.25 per contact hour for in-district students, from $103.70 to $105.95.
“Northwestern Michigan College is committed to preparing our learners for success in a rapidly changing global society and economy,” said NMC President Timothy J. Nelson. “We are proud of the work we have done to limit the financial impact on learners by remaining agile and responsive. We still have more work ahead of us, but are dedicated to keeping NMC as the top choice for our learners.”
College leaders have been working to make the institution more efficient and lower costs, including reducing 16 positions through restructuring in the last four years and 12 positions through a voluntary separation plan this year. Those efforts combined with support from donors, lawmakers and community members are helping the college achieve its goals.
For 2018-2019, 21 percent of NMC’s revenue will come from state aid, 22 percent from local property tax, 52 percent from tuition and fees and five percent from other sources.
