TRAVERSE CITY — Northwestern Michigan College joined nearly 350 community colleges around the country last week by signing the Presidents for Entrepreneurship Pledge of the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE).
President Nick Nissley signing the Presidents for Entrepreneurship Pledge (download high-resolution photo)By signing the pledge, NMC President Nick Nissley committed the college to undertake entrepreneurial practices that boost economic vitality in their communities. The pledge includes five action steps to advance entrepreneurship, including:
NMC already has established a strong commitment to entrepreneurship through its office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Nissley signed the pledge at the Lakebed 2030 conference, just before the winner of the second Great Lakes BlueTech Challenge was named. Naiad Technologies received $30,000 in seed funding. No. 2 finisher Nucleic Sensing Systems received $20,000 and No. 3 Lacuum AI received $10,000. The 2027 Great Lakes BlueTech Challenge will open in January.
Headquartered in North Carolina, NACCE is the country’s leading organization focused on promoting entrepreneurship through community colleges. The pledge is one of its foremost leadership tools.
In 2023, NMC won $40,000 in an NACCE pitch competition which helped it acquire a 3D concrete printer and the curriculum to add the revolutionary building technology to its construction curriculum.

TRAVERSE CITY — More than 400 area middle and high school students will have a chance to “try a trade” when NMC hosts its annual Building Tomorrow event Thursday Oct. 1 and Friday, Oct. 2 at the Aero Park Laboratories building.
Set for 9 a.m.-2 p.m. both days, the event is a hands-on experience that allows students to explore multiple skilled trades careers. Students will rotate through stations including carpentry, electrical, HVAC, automotive, welding and excavation site work.
“It’s very, very hands on,” said Carolyn Andrews, coordinator of NMC’s Construction Technology program. Students will take off tires, drive a mini excavator, build benches and picnic tables and wire a light, with the goal of exposing them to career paths they may not have considered.
“We want to change the stigma, change the culture. A lot of these are great careers,” Andrews said.
Aero Park Laboratories is located at 2525 Aero Park Dr. on NMC’s Aero Park campus.
There is strong employer demand for skilled trades workers. Construction laborers and managers, automotive service technicians and mechanics, electricians, HVAC mechanics and installers and plumbers are all among Michigan’s 2026 Hot 50 jobs outlook with the highest projected growth, openings and wages.
NMC offers both degrees and certificates in automotive technology, construction technology, engineering technology, manufacturing technology, renewable energy technology, surveying and welding technology. In all technical programs, enrollments are limited to maximize students’ access to the most current technology and industry-knowledgeable instructors. Technical curriculum is reviewed and approved by local advisory committees.

Mapping the Great Lakes has taken a Grand Canyon-sized leap since the last Lakebed 2030 conference, and NMC students are a part of it.
When the effort to map all five Great Lakes at high resolution started five years ago, such data existed for less than 15 percent of the lakes. Next week, when 175 professionals from science, research, policy, government and industry gather again at the Hagerty Center, 17 percent of the U.S. waters will be mapped. The increase of 1,885 square miles roughly equals Grand Canyon National Park.
U.S. Senator Gary Peters speaks via video at a Lakebed 2030 event in 2022.That data is critical to keeping the lakes drinkable, fishable and swimmable. It’s also vital to creating new jobs and industries based around water resources — the essence of the blue economy that NMC is advancing in multiple ways. From seed funding for new entrepreneurs to collaborating with community and academic partners to experiential learning opportunities for NMC students, Lakebed will showcase all of it Sept. 15–17. Highlights include:
“NMC is committed to future-focused learning and to being a community cornerstone,” Nissley said. “Both the entrepreneurship pledge and joining CIGLR illustrate those commitments, and how they benefit our students and region.”

Adults 21 to 24 are jumping at the chance to earn a college degree from NMC, submitting more than half of total applications to Michigan Reconnect last week, when it opened to their age group.
Michigan Reconnect, the state scholarship that last year awarded $1.3 million to 513 adult NMC students who didn’t previously have a degree or certificate, is again open to students 21 and older. Application activity last week indicated that there’s a strong demand for the opportunity.
Students 21 to 24 submitted 32 applications, more than half of NMC’s 57 total Reconnect applicants last week, when the online application was updated. The state introduced Michigan Reconnect in 2021, as part of its goal to increase economic competitiveness. Until this fall, age eligibility for the free, in-district tuition scholarship had been 25 for all but 15 months.
Reconnect graduates and current students strongly recommend the program.
“I was looking for a new career path and was ready to start something new. Michigan Reconnect has helped me pay for my entire degree, so it has been a huge help,” said Jacob Holcomb (above), a Reconnect recipient currently enrolled in Water Quality & Environmental Technology.
“I often struggle asking for help,” said Hannah Ramsby (right), a Reconnect recipient and 2024 culinary graduate. “The money is there to help. I love that it is helping those who may think that they’re too old to go to school or don’t deserve it.”
A study by the American Educational Research Association published in 2025 found that Michigan Reconnect increased adult enrollment at Michigan’s 31 community and tribal colleges by about 38 percent. That puts NMC’s first week applications ahead of pace.
In-district tuition is the rate charged to Grand Traverse County residents, who also pay a property tax to support NMC. Out-of-district residents’ tuition is discounted by that amount, currently $136/contact hour for general academic programs.
The change was funded by a $25 million appropriation in the 2026-27 Michigan state budget, adopted in July. Learn more about the scholarship and eligibility.
