Attend a special reception and lecture with the curator of a new exhibit at the Dennos Museum Center, Thursday, January 17.
The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present the exhibition THEM: Images of Separation from January 13 to March 3, 2013. THEM: Images of Separation is a lead component of a larger initiative in Traverse City called Embrace the Dream, which involves numerous area cultural and educational institutions working in collaboration with the Traverse City Human Rights Commission. (The events surrounding this initiative can be found at www.dennosmuseum.org/tolerance.)
THEM: Images of Separation is a traveling exhibition from the Jim Crow Museum at Ferris State University. Curated by Ferris State University professor of Social Sciences Dr. David Pilgrim, it showcases items from popular culture used to stereotype different groups. The negative imagery — found on postcards, license plates, games, souvenirs and costumes — promoted stereotyping against such groups as Asian-Americans, Hispanics, Jews and poor whites, as well as those who are “other” in terms of body type or sexual orientation.
The Jim Crow Museum is noted for its extensive collections of racist memorabilia against African Americans and the exhibition includes items demeaning to African-Americans, but that is only a part of the exhibition’s larger picture. “I’m hoping ‘THEM‘ shows discrimination and stereotyping is not just a black/white issue — it’s more pervasive than that,” says Dr. Pilgrim.
Pilgrim says, “For this show, we took our direction from Martin Luther King’s famous quote, ‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Through 35 separate framed pieces (some with multiple items, such as postcards); “THEM” tackles some of the most contentious, cultural hot-button issues: anti-Arab sentiment, Holocaust denial, “don’t ask, don’t tell” and immigration.
Dr. Pilgrim will speak at a special evening reception for the exhibition on Thursday, January 17 beginning at 5:30 PM that will feature a tasting menu of Soul Food favorites, with the lecture at 7 PM in the Milliken Auditorium of the Dennos Museum Center. The reception and lecture is open to the public free of charge, and is sponsored by DTE Energy, The Michigan Civil Rights Commission and NMC Student Life.
Just a reminder, parking enforcement on campus resumes on Monday, January 21.
NMC students and staff can check out the weekly food service menu online at nmcdining.com.
At NMCdining.com you can not only see what the daily dining menus are, but you can see what the hours at the food court and Simply To Go kiosks are at the main campus, at Parsons-Stulen and the University Center.

Please read carefully as there are changes affecting student accounts
Payment due date for spring 2013 is January 3, 2013. For information on how to make a payment or set up a payment plan, please go to: www.nmc.edu/cashier. Payment by electronic check (from savings or checking) is the most efficient option and if saved as a refund option provides the fastest refund possible.
To pay online, log into MyNMC at www.nmc.edu and choose Self-Service
To apply for financial aid, go to: www.fafsa.gov and submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
NMC’s drops for non-payment have changed:
You are responsible for payment of all charges by the payment due date or the due dates on your payment plan. NMC may drop your enrollment in classes if you owe a balance after January 3, 2013. However, there are circumstances where, as a courtesy, we will not drop your classes. You must drop any classes that you do not plan to attend, otherwise, you will be responsible for payment of charges incurred and will receive a grade at the end of the semester. All prior semester balances must be paid before registering for future semesters.
NEW: There will be only one auto-drop for non-payment, scheduled for approximately January 7. Even if you don’t receive a notification as described below, please check and manage your account status and class schedule regularly, especially between now and the 100% refund dates listed on your class schedule for each course.
NEW: Students who are eligible for financial aid do not need to set up a payment plan. If NMC has received your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and it is not flagged as ineligible due to loan defaults, satisfactory academic progress suspension or other issues, you are not required to set up a payment plan. Please monitor your Self-Service and NMC email daily and respond to all requests for information. All students are responsible to pay for any balances not covered by financial aid. You are responsible to manage your own enrollment (for example: dropping classes you do not plan to attend/pay for).
Please understand your federal loan limits and pay for balances in excess of your potential aid:
Click on this link for: Federal Student Loan Limits. Withdrawal or non-attendance can result in loss of financial aid. If your financial aid is completely in place (authorized), you can charge against the available balance at the NMC Bookstore from December 17 through January 24. Contact Student Financial Services for more information on your financial aid eligibility.
