Free event for NMC students: Hanggai

Dennos Museum Concert Season
Hanggai, September 29, 2012, 8 pm, Milliken Auditorium

Hanggai is one of the outstanding international touring bands from China.  This group is a Beijing-based group of musicians who left the city’s punk rock clubs to rediscover their roots in inner Mongolia.  They now perform Mongolian folk music with traditional and Western instruments and still can be heard in those Beijing clubs playing this music for enthusiastic young audiences.

NMC students can receive one free ticket for this exciting event.  Students can reserve their free ticket in the Student Life Office, Dennos Museum front desk, or the Dennos Box Office.

Each student may order one additional ticket at half-price (standard tickets are $25).  Please contact the Dennos Box office with further questions.  All pre-ordered tickets must be picked up by 7:30 pm on the evening of the concert.

Dennos Box Office will open on September 19, 2012.  Box Office hours are Wednesday – Saturday, 3 – 5 pm and one hour prior to the concert.

Kudos to Emily Magner

Emily Magner worked tirelessly this summer coordinating orientation for new students. Her welcoming and supportive attitude with incoming students puts them at ease, and I observed her doing this time and time again for countless students.

At opening conference Tim Nelson told about Emily taking care of a perspective student’s dog and watching his 11-year old son so that he could attend orientation. This gesture allowed this student to register for classes and begin his educational journey here at NMC. Emily is passionate about new students getting their needs met when first arriving on campus, and she works hard to instill those values in her student workers, and I know it spills over to others who are assisting our students.

I also saw Emily work very hard over the summer planning Pine Palooza, and want to thank her for such a successful and professional event that benefited our students and makes us all proud of our college and its resources.

International Affairs Forum kicks off September 20

Yale professor Dr. Ellen Lust will present “The Arab People Are Speaking—But What Are They Really Saying?” Sept. 20, the first lecture in the 2012-13 International Affairs Forum lecture series at  Milliken Auditorium.

A first-hand observer of the ongoing upheaval in the Muslim world, Lust will decipher how the explosion of political opposition in Libya, Syria, Egypt and Yemen signals a sea change in the Middle East. The issue is whether the U.S. can connect with the new Arab “street” without jeopardizing longstanding ties to entrenched but powerful regimes.

The eight-part IAF series brings diplomats, policy makers, journalists and others from all over the globe to Milliken Auditorium. All programs begin with a reception in the Sculpture Court of the Dennos Museum Center at 5:15 p.m. and are followed at 6 p.m. by the lecture and a discussion period in Milliken Auditorium.

The NMC Red Flag System

Red Flag is a system at NMC to help students, faculty, and staff to report when a NMC student is experiencing emotional, psychological, or safety issues. Here are some things that are typical things to report:

  • Questionable or suspicious acts or behavior
  • Knowledge of information or incidents that could cause harm
  • Knowledge of illegal actions, assaults, and/or drug or alcohol sale or usage
  • Expressions by others of feelings of depression, reduction of self worth, and/or uselessness

If you are not sure whether to make a report in Red Flag, you can call 231-995-1118 to consult with a NMC counselor.

If you are concerned about a student, please enter the information into Red Flag https://report.myredflag.com/reporter/login/school/nmc if you have these types of concerns or need further assistance.

If you make a report, a member of the Behavior Incident Report Team (BIRT) will contact you to discuss the matter further.

Constitution Day September 17

The US Constitution influences our lives more than two hundred years after it was ratified.  Yet many Americans don’t know much about it.  That is why Congress established Constitution Day, a time to teach future generations about the foundation of our democracy.

Join NMC History Department faculty for a discussion forum at 6 p.m., Monday, September 17 in Scholars Hall Room 102.  Topics include:

  • Who really elects our president?
  • The Constitution, the election and you!
  • Did the Civil War lay the groundwork for the War on Terror?

All are welcome free of charge: students, staff faculty and the public.
