IAF programming returns this week

Thanks to the International Affairs Forum, whose winter-spring series of events gets underway this week with “Long Arm or Strong Arm? Executive Power in Foreign Policy and at Home,” Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. in Milliken Auditorium. NMC faculty, staff and students are admitted free. Extended Ed adds full day College for Kids programming

Thanks to Extended Education & Training, which opened registration for College for Kids last week, including a new option of full-day programming for first through sixth graders. In a community where child care demand outpaces supply, this offers families an important additional quality option for the summer months.

Remembering those who served

Thanks to the Great Lakes Maritime Academy for hosting the 50th annual Mariners Memorial Nov. 10, and NMC Student Veterans of America chapter adviser Ryan Deering for planning and hosting Veterans Day ceremonies Nov. 11. These annual back-to-back ceremonies remind us of NMC’s role as a community cornerstone, providing time and space to remember those who served in important roles in our individual and national life.

Thanks-for-Giving

To the Professional Communications (BUS 231) students supporting local families again this Thanksgiving through the 12th annual Thanks-for-Giving experiential learning project. Students strive to alleviate regional food insecurity by providing 175 Thanksgiving meal boxes to families in need. Working to solve period poverty

Thanks to the International Affairs Forum, Multicultural Club and International Services and Service Learning. Last week the three groups partnered to offer multilayered experiential learning opportunities: On Wednesday, IAF sponsored a screening of the documentary Powerful Women, including a presentation by one of the subjects, Madhvi Dalal, founder of PadMad, an initiative working to end period poverty in Kenya, Somalia and Malawi. On Saturday, the Multicultural Club organized a fundraising walk for PadMad around the Boardman Lake, led by Dalal. In the spring, NMC students will travel to Kenya for a study abroad experience.

Freshwater Research & Innovation Center

To Jason Slade, Lisa Cooper and everyone who has helped the Freshwater Research & Innovation Center get to the point of groundbreaking this Friday. The $28.9 million project, a collaborative effort of Discovery Pier, Northwestern Michigan College, Traverse Connect, Michigan Technological University and 20Fathoms, will establish Northern Michigan as the epicenter of water innovation and a globally relevant hub for the blue economy.

New help desk system improves user experience

To staff from Educational Technologies, Information Technology Services, Systems and LAN Management and Technology Support Services, for implementing Freshservice, a new help desk application, this summer.
