We’re proud to announce that 729 students are taking advantage of the Community College Guarantee at NMC this fall. Collectively, they are helping the state of Michigan reach its Sixty by 30 goal – 60% of adult Michiganders earning a post-high school degree or certificate by 2030.

Thanks to the Great Lakes Maritime Academy for hosting the 50th annual Mariners Memorial Nov. 10, and NMC Student Veterans of America chapter adviser Ryan Deering for planning and hosting Veterans Day ceremonies Nov. 11. These annual back-to-back ceremonies remind us of NMC’s role as a community cornerstone, providing time and space to remember those who served in important roles in our individual and national life.

To the Professional Communications (BUS 231) students supporting local families again this Thanksgiving through the 12th annual Thanks-for-Giving experiential learning project. Students strive to alleviate regional food insecurity by providing 175 Thanksgiving meal boxes to families in need. Thanks to the International Affairs Forum, Multicultural Club and International Services and Service Learning. Last week the three groups partnered to offer multilayered experiential learning opportunities: On Wednesday, IAF sponsored a screening of the documentary Powerful Women, including a presentation by one of the subjects, Madhvi Dalal, founder of PadMad, an initiative working to end period poverty in Kenya, Somalia and Malawi. On Saturday, the Multicultural Club organized a fundraising walk for PadMad around the Boardman Lake, led by Dalal. In the spring, NMC students will travel to Kenya for a study abroad experience.

To Jason Slade, Lisa Cooper and everyone who has helped the Freshwater Research & Innovation Center get to the point of groundbreaking this Friday. The $28.9 million project, a collaborative effort of Discovery Pier, Northwestern Michigan College, Traverse Connect, Michigan Technological University and 20Fathoms, will establish Northern Michigan as the epicenter of water innovation and a globally relevant hub for the blue economy.

Thanks to the NMC Foundation team, who is bringing back the Scholarship Open, presented by Bill & Susie Janis, on Wednesday, Aug. 6 after a four-year hiatus. First held in 1982, the Scholarship Open has raised over $2 million for scholarships, making higher education accessible for thousands of NMC students. Thanks to the Construction Technology Division and NMC Foundation for successfully receiving more than $150,000 in grant funds for a 3D concrete printer. The printer will arrive on campus today for installation this week and will be incorporated into classes this fall. NMC plans to use this printer to revolutionize the regional construction industry and address its dire housing shortage while simultaneously giving graduates a competitive edge in employment.

To the Great Lakes Maritime Academy, for receiving a certificate of inspection for its newest vessel, the tugboat Robinson Bay, on July 2, enabling cadets to begin training aboard the donated vessel this week. The first vessel the Academy has acquired in more than 20 years, the Robinson Bay expands job opportunities for graduates of the nation’s only freshwater maritime academy as well as reducing operating costs. To the Great Lakes Culinary Institute, which will open Café Lobdell’s for the eighth summer starting tomorrow, June 24, through July 30. The capstone course in GLCI’s one-year Baking Certificate program. culinary students will make and serve fresh sweet and savory baked goods and a wide variety of specialty coffee drinks..Hours are 7:30–11 a.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to NMC earning Military-Friendly school status this year,The award was based on NMC’s performance in multiple categories of service to military and veteran students. The most heavily weighted, at 30 percent each, are military student support and retention, and graduation and career outcomes. NMC was one of only two community colleges in Michigan to earn the distinction. Read the news release here.
