Jenny grew up in Grand Rapids and moved to Traverse City 30 years ago to be with her husband, Paul. They will celebrate their 30th anniversary this September! She graduated from Grand Rapids Junior College, and Central Michigan University with a degree in Business Administration. She previously worked at the local Home Builders Association as the Membership and Education Director and prior to that West Senior High School as a Para-professional working with technology.

Jenny is the proud mother of four children – Joseph, 26, Emma, 25, David, 22 and William, 20.  She also calls herself a “recovering hockey mom” as she spent 20 years supporting her children’s participation in local hockey programs through their high school years.  She does not have any grandchildren – but is the proud grandmother to a couple of very handsome grand dogs!

Welcome to NMC Alex!

Alexandra (Alex) has been a Graphic Designer for almost longer than she can remember. Born and raised in the Detroit area, she lived there until last August. Before deciding to dedicate herself full-time to teaching she worked for several Marketing and Promotions firms on projects for companies such as Ford, Jaguar and Bosch. She has a BA in Communications with a major in Advertising from Michigan State and a BFA in Graphic Design from the College for Creative Studies. She loves to read and watches an unhealthy amount of television. She also enjoys gardening and golf and hopes to be able to bring her two unnaturally large cats up from Detroit soon.

Daniel Gentry - Director of Admin SystemsDaniel Gentry joined NMC as Director of Administrative Services on January 13, 2014. He can be reached at 995-1061 or dgentry@nmc.edu. 

A lifetime resident of Indiana, Dan holds a degree in Business Administration from Indiana Wesleyan University.  He is excited to come to Traverse City and NMC after 12 years in Purdue University’s Development Office, where he was the Director of Information Services.  Dan and his wife Kelly like to participate in historical re-enactments focusing on the period between 1750 and 1812.  His hobbies include cycling, playing the trombone and Irish bouzouki, and sending money to his college-aged children.

Welcome to NMC Gwendolyn!

Gwendolyn Thurston joined NMC as Human Resource Assistant – Supplemental on September 16, 2013.  She will be job sharing with Heather Hess, Human Resource Assistant – Supplemental, with both being responsible for managing Student, Supplemental and Adjunct Faculty new hires.  Gwendolyn may be reached at gthurston@nmc.edu. or at the HR Department  995-2612.

Gwendolyn recently moved here from Marquette, Michigan where she was employed by Rio Tinto, as the Human Resources Coordinator for a new nickel and copper mine.  Day hiking the North Country Trail is a favorite activity of hers and she is looking forward to exploring the trails here.  Kayaking Lake Michigan, snowshoeing, stand up paddle boarding and rowing crew with the Lake Leelanau Rowing Club are all on the bucket list for the coming year.  She is looking forward to meeting new people as well as taking continuing education classes at NMC.

Allie grew up and graduated from high school in East Jordan. She has a son who is four years old. Previously Allie worked at LexaMar Corporation working in the quality department. In her free time she enjoys reading, hiking, watching movies and spending time with her son. A fun fact about Allie: she’s a Harry Potter fanatic!

Cortnie grew up in Ithaca, MI and went to college at Saginaw Valley State University where she graduated with a degree in Communication. She held a retail job for a year after college while also volunteering at the Child and Family Services of Saginaw as a Sexual Victim Advocate before coming to NMC. Cortnie loves to read, go out to see movies, and do just about anything outdoors! A few interesting facts about Cortnie: She can say the alphabet backwards from memory, and she was on the SVSU Club Dodgeball team for four years and in her third year her team took the National Title!

Welcome to NMC Steve!

Steve Rice joined NMC as an Accounting Instructor in the Business Academic Area on August 15, 2013.  He can be reached at 995-1163, by knocking on the door of Beckett Building, Room 114, or srice@nmc.edu.

Steve and his family have lived in Traverse City for the last 8 years.  He is one of a family of four which includes his wife, Kimberly, age ? and two sons, Benjamin, age 9 and Samuel, age 6.  In addition, they have a pet Small Mouth Bass, appropriately named, “Billy.”

Steve’s background is in business, teaching at the university level, and ministry (both church and para church settings).  His real love is teaching and seeing the light bulb come on.  His hobbies include reading, writing, exercising, and “coffeeing out loud”, also known as heart felt dialogue over coffee.

Cindy Weaver joined NMC in the position of Medical Office Manager in Health Services on September 3, 2013. She can be reached at 995-1255 or cweaver@nmc.edu.

Cindy recently moved to the area from Kansas City with her husband Doug and their two dogs. They have vacationed Up North for the last 30+ years and after their daughter Meghan married, and son Zach graduated college, they finally realized their dream of moving up to Traverse City. Cindy has worked the last eight years in a pediatricians office but has also worked for antique auctioneers, home builders and banks. In her spare time she likes to hike, read, and she is currently looking for some folks that want to play Asian Mah Jong. Anyone who is interested should let her know!

John, originally from the Detroit Area, has lived in the Empire area for the better part of the last three decades. He is married to Amy Johnson-Velis, a counselor at Glen Lake Comm. Schools, and they have two children, Emma who is beginning her Freshman year at Carlton College and Charlie who is beginning his Junior year at Central High School. John has worked as a secondary teacher, IT director, and owned an Internet design and hosting company. When not hanging with his family he can be found running the trails, kayaking the lakes, soaring the skies, or just messing around in his garage.
