The Harmaleighs are Haley Grant (lead vocals and guitar) and Kaylee Jasperson (bass and backup vocals). They honestly craft poetic, passionate, and powerful songs cut from a pastiche of indie, folk, pop and Americana. Past versions of the band have been sparser, but the group’s newest album, She Won’t Make Sense, explores new territory in sound and subject matter. The album deals directly with Haley’s mental health, documenting the many forms depression can take. “Anthem for the Weak” introduces Haley’s anxiety. “It’s that dialogue with your inner self and how at times it feels like that inner voice has more control over you than you do.”

Explore careers in Fisheries and Wildlife and Conservation Biology with Dr. Ashley Moerke Director, Center for Freshwater Research and Education at Lake Superior State University and Dr. Constanza Hazelwood, Program Coordinator, Freshwater Studies at NMC’s Great Lakes Water Studies Institute.
Participants will be introduced to career pathways starting at NMC with an Associate’s in Freshwater Studies and transfer up to 70 credits to LSSU where they will complete Bachelor’s programs in Conservation Biology or Fisheries and Wildlife.
These pathways prepare students to become Conservation Officers, Fisheries Managers, Wildlife Managers and Research Biologists and more:

Amanda Thomashow and Morgan McCaul are the founders of Survivor Strong, based out of Detroit, MI. Amanda and Morgan, both former gymnasts, are survivors of the Larry Nassar abuse and are passionate about ending gender-based violence. They are presenting to three social science classes at NMC on Tuesday, October 22nd from 1-3 p.m. in Scholars Hall 109.
Survivor Strong believes that no survivor of gender-based violence should ever stand alone, and that healing starts by being listened to and believed. LEARNing from Survivors, their latest program, tackles establishing healthy personal practices, identifying and addressing harmful behavior, and options for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence on campuses with an inclusive, trauma-sensitive approach.
“I look forward to sharing LEARNing from Survivors with students and community stakeholders, because it’s the kind of survivor-centric, restorative programming that I believe all students deserve. We’re redefining what advocacy looks like in the real world” says Survivor Strong’s executive director, Amanda Thomashow.
Thomashow will be joined by campus activist, Morgan McCaul, to facilitate the first session of LEARNing from Survivors at Northwestern Michigan College. Thomashow and McCaul are recipients of multiple national awards for their work on behalf of sexual assault survivors, including the Paul H. Chapman Award from the Foundation for the Improvement of Justice and the2018 Humanitarian Award from the Foundation for Global Sports Development, and have contributed to countless national media outlets, including The New York Times, ESPN, CNN and The Huffington Post.

Currently touring in support of their recent recording, Louise Bichan, Orkney (Scotland) fiddler with appearances on the BBC and at Edinburgh Castle, and Ethan Setiawan (USA) 2014 National Mandolin Champion, present a dynamic collaboration and meeting of their musical worlds. The journey taken winds through Scottish, Old Time and Swedish Inspired music woven with contemporary compositions. Bichan’s fiddle is a melodic foil to Setiawan’s counterpoint and harmonic textures, and the two of them weave in and out seamlessly.
While there, grab an Irish inspired lunch from Hawk Owl Cafe’s Meals on the Move.

GVSU Traverse City has partnered with the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation to host a Scholarship Success Workshop at the NMC University Center (2200 Dendrinos Drive) in Room 204 on November 6, 2019 from 5:30–6:30 p.m.
Participants will learn “Tips and Tricks” on how to write a winning scholarship essay. They will also find out more information about local scholarship opportunities. The event is FREE and open to the public.
