NMC Automotive technology end of year celebration & job fairAutomotive Technology is hosting an end of the year celebration and job fair from 3–6 p.m. on Thursday, May 1 at the Automotive Service Technology Building on NMC’s Aero Park Campus. Come grab a burger or brat, see NMC’s project vehicles, meet with regional employers in the automotive industry and tool vendors.

This event is open to all current NMC and high school students, instructors, automotive career tech students and NMC automotive alumni.

Campus Life is hosting a dodgeball tournament on Thursday, April 24 at 7 p.m. in the Rajkovich Physical Education Building on NMC’s Front Street Campus.

End of Year Block Party

NMC End of Year Block PartyStop by the End of Year Block Party from 4–8 p.m. on Saturday, April 26 in the Dogwood and Chestnut parking lots. There will be over 11 different carnival rides, 5 different truck vendors and other activities!

This event is open to all current NMC students, employees and their families. The first 150 students or employees will receive a door prize. Attendees must sign up in advance.

Echoes of Change: The Legacy of Student Activism

International Affairs Forum event at Northwestern Michigan CollegeNMC’s International Affairs Forum continues its 31st season with an unprecedented event led by NMC students on the IAF Student Leadership Team. Join IAF for “Echoes of Change: The Legacy of Student Activism” at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 17 at the Dennos Museum Center. The guest speaker is Danielle K. Brown, Ph.D., 1855 Community and Urban Journalism Professor and an associate professor in the School of Journalism at Michigan State University.

Brown will discuss the social and political underpinnings of student movements. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on “the cross-sections of journalism, political science, and sociology. She specializes in analyses of media representations and narrative change, social movements and activism, and identity and political psychology.”

As part of this exploration, the IAF Student Leadership Team has interviewed scholars and activists. The team will share curated video interview segments during the live event, interwoven with moderated conversation on stage. Discussion will highlight past student protest movements as well current issues around political activism on campuses across the country.

The April 17 in-person event at the museum is open to the public and available to watch online. At 5:30 p.m., enjoy a reception, explore the Dennos Museum Center galleries and meet the students behind this event. At 6:30 p.m., the program begins in Milliken Auditorium. Admission is $15 per person or free for students, educators, and active-duty military. Advance tickets are strongly encouraged. Join Ratio Christi to watch “The Promise” at New Hope Church

NMC Ratio Christi The Promise musicalNMC students are invited to join Ratio Christi to watch “The Promise” on Wednesday, April 16 at New Hope Church in Williamsburg. “The Promise” is a powerful Easter musical of the life of Jesus Christ from birth to resurrection and features a cast and crew of over 150 people.

The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Those interested in carpooling should meet in the parking lot outside East Hall on NMC’s Front Street Campus at 6:30 p.m. (look for the large white van or a group of people).

Admission is free. 

COVID-19 vaccine clinic

Northwest Michigan Health Services is hosting a COVID-19 vaccine clinic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2 in the Cedar Lot on NMC’s Front Street Campus. NMC students, employees and family members ages 12 and older are eligible to receive a vaccine at no cost. Proof of insurance is not needed.

Audio Tech Student Showcase

NMC audio tech showcaseAudio Technology students will present their “Student Showcase” production at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9 at the Milliken Auditorium in the Dennos Museum Center as part of their experiential learning class project. Admission is free.

This concert will highlight student talent both on and off stage, as Audio Tech students will be running live sound, setting up and tearing down equipment and stage managing during the performances. All of the pre-production and marketing were also entirely student-led.

Performing this year are acts that feature a wide range of genres from indie bedroom pop to hip hop and rock n’ roll, the Audio Tech student body is proud to showcase their hard work over the past semester. The following performers include:

Risen movie screening

Risen Ratio Christi flyerNMC students are invited to join Ratio Christi at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 11 in the Timothy J. Nelson Innovation Center, room 106/107 to watch a screening of Risen. Pizza and popcorn will be provided.

Risen is a film about the true story of the manhunt that changed history. A popular religious leader is killed publicly by the Romans; when his body goes missing, a soldier is tasked with finding it. Graves are dug up and many are interrogated. When he finally finds the body, it’s not at all what he expected and his life is changed forever.

 

The Blue Economy: Michigan’s Global Role

NMC IAF John AustinThe International Affairs Forum at Northwestern Michigan College will host a discussion about a future focus for northern Michigan’s vitality – The Blue Economy: Michigan’s Global Role.

IAF welcomes John C. Austin, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and director of the Michigan Economic Center at the University of Michigan. Austin is an economic coalition builder and a regional advocate for sustainable Great Lakes economic activity.

Joining Austin is Frank Ettawageshik, executive director of the United Tribes of Michigan and an internationally recognized environmental activist who has represented our region at COP21. Lending perspective on workforce training and development is John Lutchko, director of the Great Lakes Water Studies Institute at NMC.

The event will be held on Thursday, March 20 at the Dennos Museum Center, 1701 E. Front St., Traverse City. The discussion starts at 6:30 p.m. with a welcome reception at 5:30 p.m.

The concert will feature a vibrant mix of music genres, showcasing each band’s versatility. Expect an evening filled with rhythm, melody and harmony that will leave you spellbound.

“Rockin’ Into Spring” Dollars for Scholars fundraiser

Northwestern Michigan College (NMC) Audio Tech Students present “Rockin’ Into Spring: Dollars for Scholars,” a benefit concert set to raise funds for NMC student scholarships. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 12 at the Milliken Auditorium in the Dennos Museum Center with music starting at 7 p.m. 

Headlining the show is Racing Mount Pleasant (formerly known as Kingfisher), a seven-piece indie rock band hailing from Detroit. All members of the band are alumni of University of Michigan’s School of Music, and have performed at many notable venues around Ann Arbor and Detroit. The band consists of Sam Dubose on guitar and vocals, Connor Hoyt on alto saxophone, Sam Uribe-Botero on tenor saxophone, Callum Roberts on trumpet, Kaysen Chown on fiddle and guitar, Tyler Thendstedt on bass and Casey Cheatham on drums.

Opening for Racing Mount Pleasant this year is Trillium Groove, a trio from Northern Michigan consisting of Skylea Martin, Keagan Kalbfleisch and Ruby Bardenhagen. All three members are vocalists and instrumentalists who use their songwriting as a means to explore themes of mental health, self reflection and emotional healing. The band formed as the trio studied together in the NMC Audio Tech program. Joining their performance this year is drummer Aaron Rossan, another Audio Tech alumni, and bassist Abi Umstead.

This concert is produced entirely by NMC Audio Tech students as an experiential learning project. During production, students are involved in sound mixing, stage managing, and audio and video recording.

Admission is $20 for adults and $5 for students.
