Learn how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) to respond to sudden cardiac arrest. This is a non-certification training that will provide attendees with hands-on learning opportunities.

Mobile food pantry

NMC Mobile Food Pantry

NMC is hosting a mobile pantry on from 3–5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 3 in the Maple Lot at the Front Street campus.

NMC’s mobile pantry program is designed specifically for NMC students and their families. Mobile pantries provide 7-10 days worth of fresh and shelf-stable goods to supplement family incomes. While this is intended for students, all are welcome. There are no financial requirements or means tests. Drive-thru and walk-up options are both available. 

Cider and donuts with GVSU

Students are invited to join Grand Valley State University for cider and donuts from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20 in the Timothy J. Nelson Innovation Center lobby. Learn about the transfer process, explore GVSU’s programs offered in northern Michigan and connect with their academic advisors and admissions team.

Come enjoy some fall treats while discovering everything GVSU has to offer! 

Disc Golf tournament

Campus Life will host a Disc Golf tournament at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24. Participants will meet in front of East Hall. Prizes will be given for the top participants with the lowest score for 9 holes. Register

Student Ambassador Trunk or Treat

The Student Ambassador’s are inviting all students and staff to sign up to host a ‘trunk’ for their annual Trunk or Treat! Rain or shine this event will take place from 5:30–7 p.m. on October 23 in the back half of Cherry Lot on NMC’s Front Street Campus. This event is open to the community to come and trick or treat!

If you are a NMC employee or student that would like to decorate your trunk, please fill out the Trunk or Treat form by October 20 so the students can prepare the parking lot.

The Ambassadors will be having ‘celebrity’ judges this year and will award the following:

  • 1st place: $75 Amazon Gift Card
  • 2nd place: $50 Amazon Gift Card
  • 3rd place: $25 Gift Card

This is a great opportunity to show off your creativity and spooky spirit with the NMC and TC community.

Global Cinema Series: Wrestling Ghosts showing Oct. 16

The World Languages department and Student Life are pleased to announce a new Global Cinema Series. Each month, a film will be shown showcasing important topics in our world. Join us on Thursday, Oct. 16 for a showing of Wrestling Ghosts in support of World Mental Health Day. The documentary follows a young mother grappling with parenting, childhood trauma, and healing. Lisa Thomas, NMC’s Dean of Students, is the moderator. 

This is a FREE program that is open to students, staff and the community, although seating is limited. Doors open and 5:30 p.m. and films begin at 6 p.m. in the Dutmers Theater at the Dennos Museum on NMC’s Front Street Campus.

Botanic Garden scavenger hunt

NMC Botanic Garden scavenger huntThe NMC Green Team invites fellows students to test your nature knowledge and sharpen your detective skills by participating in a scavenger hunt at the The Botanic Garden at Historic Barns Park at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4. Participants should meet at the Cedar Lot on NMC’s Front Street Campus at 12:30 p.m. to carpool.

NMC Versiti blood driveVersiti is holding a blood drive on the big pink bus from 1:30 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2 in the Cedar Lot on NMC’s Front Street Campus. Do your part to help save lives during a vital time of need!

Make sure you eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of water before donating. Walk-ins are welcome, though scheduling an appointment is recommended.

 

 

State Theatre community night: IAF presents Powerful Women documentary film screening with Madhvi Dalal

IAF Powerful Women State Theatre community nightJoin Northwestern Michigan College’s International Affairs Forum for a State Theatre Community Night with a documentary film screening of Powerful Women and an in-person presentation by Madhvi Dalal, among the film’s key subjects. Dalal is the founder of PadMad, an initiative working to end period poverty in Kenya, Somalia and Malawi.

Through their work, Padmad has helped thousands of girls, in Kenya and beyond, stay in school by creating access to safe, reusable menstrual products and education. This is more than a documentary film. It’s a night about courage, dignity, and reimagining what equity can look like for women and girls everywhere.

This State Theatre Community Night is presented in partnership with Uplift Travel Foundation, NMC’s International Services & Service Learning Program, and the International Affairs Forum.

We’ll cover upcoming ski and snowboard trips to local resorts, social events and gatherings throughout the season, benefits and how to make the most of them, and opportunities to connect with fellow snow enthusiasts. This is an informal, welcoming session where you can ask questions, meet the leadership team and get excited about everything we have planned. Walk to End Period Poverty

The goal is to raise $10,000 for 1,400 sanitary kits.

Water and snacks will be provided; music, prizes and activity stops will add to the experience.

All funds raised go directly to provide sanitary pads, reproductive health education, clean water and sanitation facilities in Kenyan communities via a partnership between Kenyan organization PadMad and U.S. partner, the Michigan-based Uplift Travel (Utopia Foundation.)

Applying to College 101

NMC is hosting Applying to College 101, an event for students beginning their college search on Monday, Oct. 6 from 6–7:30 p.m. in the Timothy J. Nelson Innovation Center. Applying to College 101 precedes and prepares students for NMC’s annual College Night and guides participants through the college application process, focusing on what to expect and time frames to be aware of.

Transfer Fair is October 8

Transfer fair poster imageNMC’s annual Transfer Fair will be held Wednesday, Oct. 8 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Timothy J. Nelson Innovation Center on NMC’s Front Street Campus. Designed for for current students who plan to transfer to a four-year school to complete a bachelor’s degree, the event is also open to high school students and community members unable to attend College Night that evening. Over 30 colleges and universities will be in attendance to answer all your transfer questions.
