Our Information Technology Services department has announced that NMC’s employee site, https://intranet.nmc.edu, will be undergoing a substantial change over the holidays, moving to a new framework. Go to https://intranet.nmc.edu/sample to view a copy of the new home page, and try the sample page links in the middle under “Login Links for Employees.” The site content is not changing, and bookmarks/shortcuts will still work.
Some recently created pages are already using the new framework, e.g., https://intranet.nmc.edu/gov/org-chart.html. You will see a mix of old and new until the changeover is completed, perhaps in mid-Jan.
If you’ve viewed the student site that came online last spring (https://students.nmc.edu), it will look familiar; however, enough minor text and visual differences have been made to help distinguish the two sites from each other, e.g., this will appear at the upper, left-hand corner of all pages:
Students, unless they are employees, do not have access to the employee site. Employees, on the other hand, have full access to both the student and employee sites.
The new layout is device friendly, i.e., it adapts to different screen sizes, from desktops down to smartphones. There are still some situations where this will be problematic, e.g., a wide Google spreadsheet embedded in a page, but for the most part, it will dramatically improve the viewing experience, regardless what device you use.
Information Technology Services would also like to ask employees to begin using the term “employee site” rather than the term “intranet” (vs. “internet” that refers to all of the “web”). “Intranet” was a common term applied to internal web sites back when we first created it here, but it’s proven to be both difficult and confusing.
Over the holidays, we hope to also change the address from https://intranet.nmc.edu to https://staff.nmc.edu. This will help clarify the purpose of the site, i.e., being a primary login point and support site for employees. Bookmarks will not be affected by the change.
For those who edit content in the employee site, continue to edit pages as needed; it doesn’t matter which layout a page appears with now; both will work. Information Technology Services will provide instructions on how to change a page to the new layout, and work with departments to complete the migration process.
As always, your feedback and comments are appreciated.
