NMC breaks ground on new student housing

Student housing groundbreaking ceremonyTRAVERSE CITY — Northwestern Michigan College held a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of a new student housing and fitness center Monday, July 11 at 2:30 p.m. The ceremony, on the north side of East Hall on NMC’s Front St. Campus, kicks off construction on the new $8.8-million, 140-bed project.

This is the first student housing built at NMC in more than 40 years. The student apartments were constructed in 1973 and the East Hall dormitory was built in 1965.

Current student housing at NMC has been at capacity for three years.

The new student housing project is expected to be complete and ready for students to move in by August 2017, for the fall semester.

Plans for the new student housing project“This project is the first of several major construction projects planned for in the next few years that will increase NMC’s ability to serve our learners and the community, while also updating outdated campus infrastructure. Combined, these projects show the dedication of our NMC employees, donors, community, business and governmental partners all working together to help ensure our learners are successful.” Said President Timothy J. Nelson, “it’s an exciting time at NMC as we see years of hard work begin to materialize and we continue to invest in the future of education.”

The project is self funded.

Spence Brothers will oversee construction. The company was awarded the project after a competitive bid process.

NMC Board of Trustees approves balanced budget and sets tuition rates for 2016-17

TRAVERSE CITY — During its regular monthly meeting, the Board of Trustees for Northwestern Michigan College unanimously approved a balanced budget and set tuition rates for the fall 2016 and spring/summer 2017 semesters.

General Tuition rates for residents will increase by $7.35 per contact hour, setting the in-district rate at $103.70 per contact hour. A Grand Traverse County student attending full time on average will see a general tuition increase of $158 for the academic year.

NMC’s in-district tuition is the 10th lowest of the state’s community colleges and is 75 percent lower than the average public universities in Michigan.

“We continue to look for ways to reduce costs to our learners through efficiency without impacting the quality of education. One example of that effort is an organizational restructuring during the last 4 years which reduced 16 staff positions. Our own work to look for efficiencies combined with support from dedicated donors, lawmakers and community members will help our learners continue to succeed during their time at NMC and beyond.” said Timothy J. Nelson, president, Northwestern Michigan College.

For 2016-17 NMC’s revenue will be 21 percent from state aid, 22 percent from local property tax, 52 percent from tuition and fees and four percent from other sources.
