We can make a difference in our community

Giving to United Way is a tradition at NMC, and over the years we’ve supported our community by volunteering on the United Way Day of Caring and giving to the United Way Campaign. Typically our gifts total about $5,000 to the campaign, and that is our goal for 2012 – $5,000 for United Way.  Thanks to several generous individuals, we have raised $2,006 so far!

Please consider a gift today. If the rest of us each give just $5 to the campaign, we’ll reach our $5,000 goal! (That’s $5 total for the year, not $5 per pay.)

Remember – you can donate to the NMC Annual Campaign through United Way by simply designating your gift to NMC on the United Way donation form.

Thank you for helping the community that supports NMC!

Kudos to Ed Blough, Gary Schettek, Kim Goll, Brian Lewis, Andrew Durecki, Levi Berlin and Aaron Aldridge

In preparation for the Veterans Day event on campus, Ed Blough, Gary Schettek, Kim Goll, Brian Lewis and student employees, Andrew Durecki, Levi Berlin and Aaron Aldridge did a great job cleaning up our flag pole area on Friday; unfortunately, high winds over the weekend blew a lot of leaves back into that area of campus.

We greatly appreciate the efforts they made on Friday, but were very grateful and impressed with how quickly they responded to our request to clean up the area again (just prior to the event). When our veterans and campus community arrived to the area, the grass looked like carpet… they did an incredible job and literally dropped everything they were doing in order to get the area cleaned up for the event – thank you!

Kudos to Elizabeth Stevens

Elizabeth Stevens volunteered to help with our Veterans Day Event and went above and beyond to ensure the event’s success. She provided great insight in the planning process, played a pivotal role during the day of the event, and was an invaluable member of our team!!!

NMC Veterans Day Tribute

Help NMC honor those who have served our country by participating in a Walk of Honor at 8:50 a.m., Monday, November 12 on the sidewalk that leads from West Hall to the campus flag poles between the Tanis and Osterlin buildings.

More than 60 area veterans will be on hand enjoying breakfast at 8 a.m. in the Northwoods Cafeteria in West Hall.  At 8:50 a.m. (rain or shine), we’d like NMC faculty and staff to line the sidewalk to thank our veterans.  The Traverse City Central High School marching band will be on hand, as will the VFW color guard, and the Coast Guard has planned a flyover between 9:07 and 9:12 a.m.  The Central High band will perform the Star Spangled Banner.

Other Veterans Day events include:

  • more than 200 thank you posters designed by local fourth and fifth graders that will be on display in the lobby of West Hall
  • a campus-wide moment of silence observed at noon to honor the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country
  • cake and coffee will be served in the West Hall lobby from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m., all are welcome

Did you know?

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in all American wars. The day honors military veterans with parades and speeches across the nation.

A national ceremony takes place at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.

Faculty and Staff: Choose to change the world!

Your contributions to the Annual Campaign build learning environments, grow dreams, and give global opportunities.

We know that there are many worthy causes to support and that its impossible to support them all.  So, why should you choose to give to NMC when so many other causes have fewer resources and less support?  At NMC, we hold the future in our hands and the possibility to solve the problems through the success of our learners.

By giving to the annual campaign, you are giving an education to someone who may one day run for political office like Betsy Coffia (NMC ’05), striving to make a difference in our community.  By giving to the annual campaign, you are creating learning opportunities that guide students like Timothy Young (NMC ’80) to fight world hunger in developing countries.

Your gift helps others be the change we all want to see in the world, and what a better way to do that than with our own cause, helping students achieve success!

By now you have received a letter about the annual campaign along with a payroll deduction form.  you can fill out and return the payroll deduction form to the Foundation and your gift will be automatically deducted from your paycheck.  You may also visit us at www.nmc.edu/give to make your impact on student success.

Thank you for all you do to help students achieve!

Be the change you wish to see in the world.  – Mahatma Ghandi

New Voluntary Insurances Available to Regular, Adjunct, and Supplemental Employees

Costs associated with an unexpected illness or accident can have a serious effect on your family’s finances.  To help increase your financial protection, Northwestern Michigan College is offering eligible employees an opportunity to apply for Critical Illness and Accidental Injury insurance through CIGNA effective January 1, 2013.

Critical Illness and Accidental Injury insurance can help you pay out-of-pocket expenses not covered by traditional insurance. These plans provide a lump sum, cash payment directly to you as a result of a covered accident or serious illness. You can spend the money however you choose or use it to help pay for additional expenses such as transportation, room and board, child care, rehabilitation, and more.

This coverage is being offered to regular employees as well as adjunct and supplemental employees who have worked an average of 10 hours per week over a recent 12-month period.  It does not replace regular medical insurance or cover medical service claims, but it can supplement you with cash payments should you or your enrolled dependents experience a critical illness or accidental injury.  If you qualify for this insurance, CIGNA will mail more information next week to your home address.

The enrollment period for this insurance is November 9 through November 30, 2012.  CIGNA will be holding informational meetings and enrollment opportunities during the following times.  If you receive a letter next week that you are eligible for this benefit, please plan to attend one of these meetings.  Stop by for coffee and bagels and a chance to learn more!
