NMC’s website gets a new look and a responsive design
Northwestern Michigan College has launched a new, more responsive website to showcase the college’s major programs and success stories. The site also works better on the wide variety of devices used by today’s students, staff, alumni and community members, including smartphones, tablets and larger computer screens.
The new look was designed by NMC’s Public Relations, Marketing & Communications department and developed by Flight Path Creative, which provided technical and implementation services. The site’s streamlined home page showcases unique college programs and also features a new color palette more reflective of NMC’s campuses and the natural environment of the Grand Traverse region.
The three-month process included focus group meetings with potential and current students, discussing how to make the site most user-friendly for them.
Northwestern Michigan College is a publicly funded community college that serves more than 50,000 people, organizations and businesses annually throughout the Grand Traverse region and beyond. NMC offers associate’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees through the Great Lakes Maritime Academy and Great Lakes Water Studies Institute, professional certificates, and an extensive array of non-credit community classes. NMC also is home to the Dennos Museum Center, Hagerty Conference Center, WNMC 90.7 FM Community Radio, and the NMC University Center, whose eight partner universities grant baccalaureate, graduate and doctoral degrees.

Most people associate happiness with positive emotions like optimism, purpose, life satisfaction and a sense of well-being. Regardless of how you define happiness, research shows it plays a powerful role in your overall health. Your most important tool for boosting happiness may be the most obvious – exercise. A landmark study that reshaped the connection between exercise and well-being (Blumenthal et. al. 1999) found that a group program of aerobic exercise – three supervised 45 minute sessions/week of cycling or walking/jogging at moderate to high intensity for 4 months – was just as effective at treating depression as was Zoloft, or even a combination of exercise and Zoloft. Even after six months, participants who recovered were less likely to relapse into depression if they were part of the exercise group (Babyak et. al. 2000). Some researchers theorize that exercise acts as a distraction from negative thoughts that feed anxiety and depression. Regular exercise also boosts self-confidence and self-esteem. Parking permits must be displayed by September 28
NMC Parking permits are now available in the Admissions office, Cashiers/Records and Registration office in the Tanis building. All cars parked in NMC lots must have an NMC parking permit affixed to the lower left side of the windshield by September 28, 2015. Please be sure to remove past NMC parking decals.

Welcome to NMC, Kim!
Kim Anderson joined NMC as a Part-Time Nursing Instructor- Obstetrics/ Pediatrics on August 17, 2015. She can be reached at (231) 995-1235 or kianderson@nmc.edu.
Kim was born and raised in Onekama Michigan and returned to Frankfort to set up her home after college. She has been with her husband since they were 14 years old and has 2 boys who are 9 and 11. Kim got her Associates in Nursing from Kalamazoo Valley Community College followed by a Bachelors in the Science of Nursing from Grand Valley State University through the University Center here at NMC. Kim continued with her Masters after ten years of working and raising a family from Walden University. She has 18 years of Maternity experience and loves to teach anything and everything. She has been an adjunct for the college for about 10 years for the Maternal-Child clinical rotation and currently works as the Maternity Educator at Munson Medical Center and a floor nurse (in her spare time). When not teaching, Kim loves to flower garden, scrapbook, camp, relax at the beach, ski with her family of snowboarders, and watch her boys play sports. Kim is very excited about the opportunity to be the Lead Faculty for Advanced Maternal Child here at NMC. It is truly a dream come true. (more…)

David was born and raised in Traverse City, before he enlisted in the United States Air Force to work on state-of-the-art Airborne computer systems. After serving in the Air Force, he moved back to Traverse City with his wife, Ann, whom he met while stationed in Oklahoma City, and their oldest child. Following his passion, he enrolled at NMC as a student in 2002, where he earned an Associate’s degree in Computer Information Systems, and a certificate for Network Administration. He continued his education at Ferris State University, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems, graduating with High Honors. He owned and operated his own computer repair business for several years before closing up shop. He continued in the IT field, where he worked in two different school districts as Tier 2/3 support. In his spare time David enjoys spending time with his and Ann’s three wonderful children, computer programming, reading and designing/building hand-built furniture. (more…)

The Global Endorsement- Alex’s global journey
Alex Bondar will be a junior at Western Michigan University in the fall of 2015. She earned her associate’s degree from NMC in general studies and hopes to receive a degree from Western in education with a focus in English.
Throughout the years, Northwestern Michigan College has gained popularity for being a ground-breaking community college. Offering four-year degrees, having maritime, aviation, and culinary programs, and even being the number one community college in the state for amount of study abroad trips. NMC has a lot to offer a student! But, it doesn’t stop there; now, the Office of International Services and Service Learning has created an opportunity for students to become more globally competent – the Global Endorsement. Success Story: Stephen Siciliano Embarks On Fourth Decade At NMC

Back in fifth grade, Stephen Siciliano found two things he liked and decided to stick with them.
Since then, he’s climbed to the pinnacle of both worlds. He’s vice president of educational services at NMC, and not only an Eagle Scout himself but a father of three more — all of whom also attended NMC.
Yet as he embarks on his fourth decade on campus, Siciliano, who wears a Scout uniform in his campus profile picture, shows no sign of boredom or restlessness. He’s excited to continue work on the challenges the college faces, like developmental education, learning outcomes and internal communication. Viewed through the lens of history, his chosen academic field, he is confident those challenges will be met. (More on those in a moment.)
Siciliano’s own history is colored by a community college — Nassau Community College on Long Island, NY, where he grew up. A first-generation college student, he had an “absolutely wonderful experience” and chose to pursue his master’s and PhD degrees in the hope of teaching at the community college level himself. So when Walt Beardslee, one of NMC’s founding faculty members, came to recruit at a National History Conference which Siciliano also happened to attend, he found an eager candidate.
“I’m thinking, ‘You don’t have to sell me. I’d love to teach at a community college,’” Siciliano, 59, recalled of that interview.
He spent 11 years teaching at NMC, including six as director of the Humanities division, his first taste of administration. In 1996 he moved into his current role as the college’s top academic officer. One of the best changes he’s seen during that time is NMC’s shift from once-a-decade accreditation to a continuous academic quality improvement process, known as AQIP.
“They focus our attention,” he said of the AQIP action projects, including, not coincidentally, those three challenges of developmental education, learning outcomes and communication.
“People say, ‘we want to get this done,’” he said, citing developmental education, the project closest to completion. “I come away from that meeting so energized.”
And that history is why he thinks that the more recently tackled projects like learning outcomes and communications, will indeed be solved.
Siciliano’s parallel world of Scouting has been transformed by quality improvement, too. While he no longer leads an active troop, like he did for a dozen years with just-retired engineering instructor Jim Coughlin, Siciliano is still involved as a liaison between two local units and the broader Boy Scout organization.
“They’ve clearly moved to quality metrics, just like our college. How can we improve the experience for the boys?” Siciliano said.
Even after 30 years as an educator, that question still animates Siciliano, who plans to keep pursuing the answer for a little while yet.
“I hope I’m here,” he says of his plans for five years down the road.

Joe grew up on a farm in the Leelanau and began his college experience at NMC in 1982 where he received his private pilot license along with an array of coursework. Finishing the B.S. in sociology and psychology at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant and the M.A. in Clinical Psychology at the Center for Studies in Detroit. He went on for advanced training with the American College of Forensic Examiners and the Fielding Institute in Santa Barbara. Joe served a two year appointment (Assistant Professor) at Central Michigan University and a fourteen year appointment (Affiliate Professor) at Grand Valley State University where he served as Faculty Director of the Ghana Honors Service Learning Program focused upon the problem of trafficking in Ghana West, Africa. Joe is co-founder and president of International Sustainability Health Education and Water (ISHEW) registered in both Allendale, Michigan and Winneba, Ghana. Joe and his wife, Elizabeth, live in Traverse City with their Springer Spaniel, Shubby and cat, Larry. Together they cherish family, friends, music, traveling and outdoor pursuits. (more…)

Norman Beeker joined NMC as a Nursing Instructor- Medical Surgical on August 17, 2015. He can be reached at (231) 995- 1237 or mabeeker@nmc.edu.
Norman Beeker goes by the nickname of Mac and was born in Detroit. He attended Michigan State University as an undergraduate, worked in public broadcasting, completed a Master’s degree at Miami University and transitioned into non-profit development work. He and his wife have lived in Ohio, Belgium and Italy before moving to Traverse City in 2003. Changes in the health of his parents led Mac to learn more about nursing which led him to the ADN program at NMC and then work as a Patient Care Coordinator at Munson Medical Center. He went on to complete a MSN in nursing education at Gonzaga University with student teaching work precepted by Jo Hendrix here at NMC. His wife is Mary Beeker who works in the Osterlin Library and they live in the Slabtown neighborhood in Traverse City. Outside of work Mac enjoys gardening, fly fishing and is a member of Sam’s Army, the supporters of the US national soccer team. (more…)

Keith Weber has joined our CIT Developer Program as a full time instructor. He was born in southern California, spent his early years in the high desert and teen years in the city of Los Angeles. He raised a family in Orange County, near Disneyland, and most recently was a resident of Long Beach. Keith built a successful business over the course of twenty-three years, installing and supporting some of the first small business networks and ERP systems, as well as writing custom software and providing business consulting services. He has been involved with various organizations, including the Boy Scouts, Y-Indian Guides/Princesses, the Independent Computer Consultants Association, and School on Wheels. Keith has five adult children. He holds an AA and a BA in Economics, as well as a MS in Information Technology from California State University, Fullerton. He is passionate about education and the mission of community colleges. (more…)
