This month in NMC history for November
50 Years Ago:
- The State okayed a matching grant of $82,000 towards construction of NMC’s new science building (now Scholars Hall). Besides regular classrooms, the building is to contain two chemistry labs, a physics lab, and a large lecture hall.
25 Years Ago:
- The college built a lighted hiking/cross country ski trail. It was 2.5 kilometers long and 8 ft. wide and went in a loop starting in the woods behind the Oleson Center and ending up at the former tennis courts (now Cherry Lot). Student government contributed $2,000 towards the $10,000 cost.
5 Years Ago: Governor Jennifer Granholm visited NMC’s Energy Demonstration Center (see photo).

The FLU is here. The first cases of Influenza A diagnosed one week ago at Munson Medical Center. Influenza vaccine is still available at Health Services for $15. Be smart and avoid the flu during final exams. Get vaccinated!
Steve Balance’s work published in Diffusion: Unconventional Photography
Steve Balance, longtime NMC Faculty Member, has been honored by having a number of his photographs published in the magazine Diffusion, Unconventional Photography (Annual Volume IV, 2012).
Steve was awarded Honorable Mention for his work titled Selena, a photopolymer gravure print from an original Polaroid transfer.
He is a retired faculty member and presently teaches courses in digital photography, art appreciation and 2-D design here at NMC, while maintaining his photography studio in Traverse City.

Through the generous support of people like you, the Annual Campaign has become one of the leading sources of funding for NMC scholarships. Last year, faculty and staff contributions raised more than $34,000 which helped provide scholarships to more than 500 students and helped meet the need of student programs and services campus wide.
Each scholarship awarded provides another opportunity for a student to grow their dream. Every scholarship recipient’s financial burden is eased because you care enough to give. Welcome Ann Geht to NMC
Ann Elizabeth Geht (formerly Ann Townsend) joined NMC in the position of Instruction Librarian on November 19, 2012. She can be reached at 231-995-1973 or ageht@nmc.edu.
Ann and her husband Jan moved to Traverse City in October after spending the past six years in Washington, D.C. Prior to moving back to her hometown, Ann worked as a librarian at Montgomery County Public Libraries and at American University. She and her husband have two young daughters, Audrey (3) and Joanna (1 1/2). Ann is delighted to be back in the Traverse City area with her friends and family.

Food for Thought delivers
NMC business students held a massive distribution day for area food pantries Friday, Nov. 16, delivering the 18,000 food and household items they collected over the past month just in time for Thanksgiving.

The Food for Thought Fill the Pantries food drive was organized by Kristy McDonald’s Business 231 students as a semester-long project enabling them to learn how to communicate professionally while also helping the community.
As reported in the Traverse City Record-Eagle, food insecurity has become the region’s largest social issue. From 2007 through 2011, food pantry visits in the Grand Traverse area climbed by 83 percent.

importance of healthy food. Food was also collected on campus, with the Dental Assisting Program winning the prize for most donations, at more than 900. Students also held collection days at Walmart, two Tom’s Food Market locations and at Family Video locations. Cash donations –totaling $3,000 — were also collected online. The class thanks everyone who donated and sponsored the event. Happy Thanksgiving!
Turn up the music
NMC Hip Hop presents Turn up the Music, a free demonstration at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 3 in Milliken Auditorium.
Hip-hop dance is movement to hip-hop music, allowing an individual to create their personal swagger, instructor Joedy Annis said. NMC hip-hop teaches rhythm and style to create just that. The NMC swagger crew has been on the scene for ten yearsm creating amazing choreography and freestyle movements. Audiences should be prepared for crazy hip hop moves, Annis said.
NMC Hip Hop dance is offered as a for-credit class through the physical education department as well as a non-credit option through Extended Education.
Innovation grant application deadline is Dec. 1
The innovation grant program was established to fund innovative initiatives – ideas and opportunities that emerge during the year and occur outside of normal NMC budget sources and processes.
The next round of innovation grant awards is coming up. Be sure to submit your proposal by December 1.
The innovation grant fund provides approximately $50,000 per year in available funding. Most successful applications are in the range of $500–$5,000. However, applicants are invited to submit proposals for any amount. The Committee may consider multi-year funding, may fund part of your proposal, or may be able to suggest other sources of funding if needed.
The Committee encourages ideas that are innovative based on location, scale, or incorporation of new ideas. We also encourage projects that involve local businesses, community members, and support the community at large.
