Andy Warhol was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as Pop Art.  His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement that flourished by the 1960s.  Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Warhol’s art encompassed many forms of media, including hand drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, silk screening, sculpture, film, and music.

After a successful career as a commercial illustrator, Warhol became a renowned and sometimes controversial artist.  His studio, The Factory, was a famous gathering place that brought together distinguished intellectuals, drag queens, playwrights, Bohemian street people, Hollywood celebrities, and wealthy patrons.

The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, holds an extensive permanent collection of his art and archival material. It is the largest museum in the United States dedicated to a single artist.

The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts; was established in 1987. In accordance with Andy Warhol’s will, its mission is the advancement of the visual arts.  The Foundation’s objective is to foster innovative artistic expression and the creative process by encouraging and supporting cultural organizations that in turn, directly or indirectly, support artists and their work. The Foundation values the contribution these organizations make to artists and audiences and to society as a whole by supporting, exhibiting and interpreting a broad spectrum of contemporary artistic practice.

Exhibition programming at the Dennos Museum Center is made possible with support from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Robert T and Ruth Haidt Hughes Memorial Endowment Fund.
