Thank you all for everything you do in pursuit of “Keeping Learning at the Center.”

Activities of Note: Faculty and Staff

This section recognizes the good work being done and linkages to the Strategic Agenda, Strategic Directions and Goals are provided where possible.

  • The APL was recognized with a Building Excellence Award by the Builder’s Exchange. The award category was for excellence in remodeling, and was submitted by Spence Brothers. (SD3)
  • Due to weather downstate, we postponed a signing ceremony on February 7 for reverse transfer agreements with seven universities—Central Michigan University, Davenport University, Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Michigan State University, Northern Michigan University, and Western Michigan University. The reverse transfer agreements will allow a student to transfer credits to obtain credentials for completed certificate or degree programs from either or both accrediting institutions. The signing will occur in March or April. (SD5)
  • An Auto and Diesel Technician Night was held at NMC’s Parsons-Stulen building the evening of February 5 hosted by the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments, Northwest Michigan Works!, and NMC. This was a specialized recruiting event that allowed employers to showcase their workplaces and educators to provide information about career pathways and programs. It provided an opportunity for auto and diesel technicians a to celebrate the fast-paced industry and learn about the latest technology, and for local employers to talk about their businesses and meet local talent. (SD2, SD3)
  • The above mentioned auto and diesel technician event was the one of several on the 2013 career and job fair calendar that has been designed to meet general workforce demands as well as the distinct needs of specialized industries. Regional organizations have partnered together to provide area employers and job seekers the opportunity to network, explore career and education opportunities, and showcase new technology, business and industry. NMC. TBAISD, Ferris State University, Northwestern Michigan Council of Government, and Northwest Michigan Works! Have come together with a common mission to provide employers the opportunity to foster workforce development and career exploration to welcome job seekers and members to the future workforce to explore local employment connections. (SD1, SD2, SD3)

Activities of Note: Tim

  • We hosted the “40 Under 40 class of 2012” at the Hagerty Center on January 22. I made a presentation and then had an open conversation with the group about the state of higher education in our region, where it’s going and where they think it should. The group seemed to appreciate the opportunity to learn more about NMC and to provide feedback. They recognized the social wealth of working together. They volunteered to share their stories and knowledge with students, and they would like to see NMC utilized as a resource hub of expertise for the community. It was a very beneficial listening session.
  • I attended my first meeting of the Munson Medical Center Board of Trustees on January 23.
  • Jason Allen and Wayne Schmidt visited my office to introduce David Nyberg, who has been appointed by Governor Snyder as Director of the Governor’s Office for Northern Michigan. I was able to have a good conversation with Mr. Nyberg and provide input on issues affecting NMC and other Michigan community colleges.
  • Nancy and I attended the 2013 Chamber Annual Celebration on January 25. Thank you trustees Doug Bishop, Bill Myers, and Kennard Weaver for helping host the NMC cabana. I think that most attendees enjoyed the new format and had a good time throughout the evening.
  • I participated in the MPSERS Board Meeting by phone last Thursday, due to inclement weather.
  • Friday morning I met with the Northwest Michigan Tooling Coalition for a photo shoot at our Parsons-Stulen building. This was to recognize a Chamber gift to the MTA program housed at our facility.
  • I then met with a combined NMC Planning and Budget Council and Curriculum Committee to share thoughts on initiating work to meet our strategic goal to embed entrepreneurship and innovation skill sets in all programming areas.
  • The Compensation Systems Review Group continues to meet every other Friday. We are now at the point where smaller meetings with each employee group representatives will be held.
  • Nancy and I attended the visitation for Barbara Dennos Saturday evening. There will be no other public services. Both Mike and Barb were dear friends to NMC and the Dennos Museum and will be missed greatly.

Legislative Issues

  • Also due to the weather conditions, I did not drive down to Lansing last week for the MCCA Legislative Summit as planned. I still, however, had phone conversations with Rep. Ray Franz, Rep. Greg MacMaster, Rep. John Walsh, and Sen. Howard Walker during our scheduled meeting times.
  • An executive team has begun the work for initiating a change request with the Higher Learning Commission to offer the baccalaureate degree and will be collaborating with other community colleges within the state on this process.

Miscellaneous

  • The overnight board retreat will be held at Chateau Chantal on March 12 and 13.
