**WELLNESS, IT’S A CHOICE**

New Year – New You?

Every year, millions of Americans vow to change their health habits by making New Year’s resolutions – to stop smoking, eat more healthily, or exercise more. But research shows that many people begin to backslide in a month or two. Why is this?

It may be because it’s really hard to change all at once on a specific day. New Year’s Eve is a single event, but change is a process that occurs in stages. We go from thinking about change to weighing the pros and cons of making that change, to taking little steps and figuring out how to jump in fully, and finally to making the change – and making it stick.

Part of the process of change involves making specific, reasonable goals that matter to you. “Lose weight” is not nearly as specific as “I want to lose ten pounds this year.”

You also need to have a plan to accomplish your goals. This includes what steps you need to take, such as buying good walking shoes and mapping out your route. Your steps toward change should be small and easily accomplished to be successful; you’re less likely to stick with an exercise program, for example, if you expect to bike 10 miles the very first day!

Does this mean that we shouldn’t make New Year’s resolutions? Not necessarily. Experts say that the intention to make a change is a first step in the right direction. But give yourself time to work through the process of change rather than having an “all or nothing” attitude.
