Here is an informal account of the Northwestern Michigan College Board of Trustees meeting Monday, October 26, 2015.

The NMC Board of Trustees met for its regularly scheduled meeting at the Oleson Center.

The Rehmann group gave a clean report in the audit presentation for NMC.

Megan Ward highlighted the Writing and Reading Center for the program focus.

Cathryn Claerhout gave an update on enrollment.

Vicki Cook gave the financial report.

Vicki Cook gave an update on the campus site plan.

Marguerite Cotto gave a quarterly update on Compensation and Classification.

President Nelson gave an update on legislative activity. In it, he indicated there seemed to not be enough support in Lansing for a nursing baccalaureate at this time.

The board heard public input from the following people:

  • Lisa Blackford on Open Educational Resources
  • Michael Torre on an upcoming pottery sale and art department events.
  • Chef Mike Skarupinski to highlight student cakes as mid-term exams
  • Matt Schwarz and Dave Traines spoke to hydraulics cross education opportunities
  • Teresa Scollon spoke about veteran writing workshop
  • Melissa Sprenkle spoke a collaboration between communications and sociology
  • David Bajema mentioned some student success stories from electric vehicles and Tesla Automotive
  • Bronwyn Jones mentioned her collaboration with Kristen Salathiel on lesson study
  • Mella McCormick spoke about downfall of Nevada education system and possible parallels at NMC.
  • Kristen Salathiel spoke about the recent professional development day
  • Susan Odgers spoke about an upcoming event on youth homelessness and also adjunct faculty.

The NMC Board accepted the following items:

  • The audit report
  • The five year capital outlay plan
  • NMC resource guidelines
  • The Board level strategic goals
  • The purchase of backup computer storage system replacement
  • The purchase of a small airplane for the aviation department

The board went into closed session to get an update on collective bargaining.

When the board returned to the regular session the board discussed Senate Bill 442 which would change the legal status of guns in areas that are commonly called “weapon free zones,” including classrooms and dormitories of community colleges. The board voted to abstain from the MCCA vote on this issue.
