Cuddle- Ningeokuluk Teevee, Stonecut & Stencil

The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will continue its tradition of exhibiting and selling the Cape Dorset Annual Graphics Collection now through November 29, 2015 with the sale of prints beginning Saturday, October 17. A reception and viewing of the prints will begin at 9:30 am with the sale beginning at 10:00 am.  Sales will be conducted by a lottery, since many of the prints will be in high demand.   Interested buyers may view the prints at www.dennosmuseum.org and receive lottery information by calling the museum store 231-995-1586. Customers need not be present to purchase a print.

The 2015 collection consists of 31 images by 12 artists in stone cut, stencil, lithography and etching/aquatint. There is work that explores the realm of legend while others are preoccupied with lived experience. There are pieces that depict creatures of the land, sea or air alongside those born of pure fantasy.

Unique to this year’s release is Inuit Now, a selection of four creature themed images, which demonstrate highly contemporary and inventive approaches to printmaking. This grouping is an important complement to the collection proper, as it pushes and pulls our expectations of print media.

Proceeds from the sale will be used to purchase new work for the Dennos Museum Inuit Collection.

Preview catalogues and price list are available at the Dennos Museum Store or by calling (231) 995-1586, the prints can be viewed by visiting the Dennos Museum Center web site www.dennosmuseum.org

In 1960, Bernard Rink, Director of the Osterlin Library at NMC, was fortunate to become the Michigan distributor for the first release of prints from Cape Dorset in 1960. From then on the Cape Dorset Print release has been hosted by the College and since 1991 by the Museum.  Through this annual sale the proceeds have been used to acquire Inuit prints along with the simultaneous acquisition Inuit of sculpture. Now noted as one of the most historically complete collections of Inuit art in United States, with over 1,500 works in the collection, the Dennos Museum Center continues the tradition of collecting Inuit prints by hosting the Cape Dorset Annual Graphics Collection.  Proceeds from the sale will be used to purchase new work for the Dennos Museum Inuit Collection.
