NMC has established a Zero Tolerance Standard with respect to acts of intimidation, threats of violence, or acts of violence relating to the campus or classroom. A safe and secure campus is essential to carrying out the mission of the College; the campus and its community are committed to working together to create and maintain a campus that is as free from forms of harassing and threatening behaviors.
Definitions
Intimidation: An intentional act toward another person, causing the other person to reasonably fear for his/her safety or the safety of others.
Threat of Violence: An intentional act that threatens bodily harm to another person or damage to the property of another.
Act of Violence: An intentional act that causes bodily harm, however slight, to another person or damage to the property of another.
NMC prohibits acts of intimidation as well as actual or threatened violence against co-workers, fellow students, visitors, or any other persons who are either on campus or have contact with the NMC community in the course of their duties. The following are examples of these types of behaviors:
Any NMC person who is the subject of, or a witness to, a suspected violation is strongly encouraged to report the violation to Campus Security. Any emergency, perceived emergency, or suspected criminal conduct should be immediately reported to Campus Security. Any supervisor, manager, or other person in authority who receives a report of a suspected violation shall consult with the Behavioral Intervention Report Team (BIRT) as appropriate. Any NMC person found to be in violation of this policy shall be subject to disciplinary action up to and including dismissal, pursuant to applicable Personnel or Student Policies and, if appropriate, shall be prosecuted. No NMC person shall be retaliated against in his/her employment for reporting intimidation, threats or acts of violence.

Supplemental Retirement Accounts through NMC
Do you currently have a 403(b) or 457(b) supplemental retirement account to which you contribute pre-tax through payroll? Did you have an account previously with NMC? If so, you need to know that the College has a third-party administrator called TSA Consulting Group which acts as our compliance agent for record keeping and administration of our plan, especially as it relates to ever changing IRS regulations.
When you get to the point where you are ready to request a transaction with your annuity (distribution, rollover, withdrawal, loan), you will have to work with both your annuity vendor and TSA in order to accomplish this. The Transaction Routing Request form is located on the Intranet at https://intranet.nmc.edu/forms/index.html under Human Resources, Benefits.

Thomas Morgan who spoke at TEDx Traverse City this year on the topic of “Put on your Underoos It’s Time to Save the World!” will have his film included in the 2013 TC Film Festival. Waiting for Mamu tells the story of the impact of children serving out prison terms with their parents in Nepal. The 40 minute film is offered as a free showing on July 31st at Noon in the new Bijou By the Bay location. Information can be accessed here.

Northwestern Michigan College Public Safety and Training invites you to attend the Michigan Autism Safety Training (MAST) for Family, School and Community, an initiative of the Autism Alliance of Michigan. The training will be held on July 17, 2013 from 6:30-8:30pm in Scholars Hall, Room 109. It will be led by Sgt. Scott Shuelke (Ret. Lansing Police Department), Autism Safety Specialist, Autism Alliance Michigan, and Mary Sharp, MD., Autism Alliance of Michigan.

Nikoline Sanderson, a student from Northwestern Michigan College, is helping a WWII veteran’s daughter finally get answers to her life long questions about her father.
Donna Gerhard approached the NMC history department hoping that they could help her find more information about her father, Sgt. Donald Fox, a soldier that fought in WWII. Sanderson was assigned to the project by Jim Press, NMC history teacher, and has done countless hours of research to help Gerhard find the information she needs about her father’s life during the military, and after.
Scott Herzberg, Assistant Director for NMC’s Outreach Services and POC Military and Veterans Services has raised $1,000 for Gerhard and himself to make a trip to a reunion with her father’s military troop. They need about $1,500 more. Gerhard is wheelchair bound and is living with multiple sclerosis. They are seeking donations for the August trip. MPSERS Retirement Application
If you are a member of the State pension system and are eligible to retire with MPSERS soon, here’s a helpful page to reference planning for your retirement, whether it will be 2 years from now all the way down to 3 months: Ready to Retire > Countdown to Retirement.
When it gets down to 3 months away, you will need to do an online application using your miAccount, your personal retirement account located on a secure section of the State of Michigan ORS website. If you want to review the things you will need to know and collect for your retirement application, you can find this helpful list online: Applying for Retirement: What You’ll Need.

Kudos to NMC History students Nikoline Sanderson and Tim Siciliano who helped Donna, a Traverse City woman, learn about the father she never knew. Nikoline and Tim researched the role Donna’s father played in World War II and helped Donna learn about her father’s part in the war and how it affected him and their family. Through Nikoline and Tim’s research Donna has been able to connect with her father’s fellow military veterans and piece together a part of her missing father’s life.
Kudos to John Biolchini and cadets Richard Gray and Dan Cairns for safely conducting tours of the T/S State of Michigan for 50 + Cherry Festival little princes and princesses, and their escorts, on Friday 05 July. Assisting all these children, answering questions, and most importantly seeing it done in a safe manner was no small achievement. Most importantly, a great time was had by the little princes and princesses and their escorts.
Kudos to the Water Studies Institute faculty and staff for a very successful professional development series held in early June. The GLWSI hosted a program focusing on the use of advanced acoustics in support of both Search and Recovery (SAR) operations and Marine Engineering applications. Attendees included employees from industries and law enforcement/first responders located across North America (Canada, US and Mexico). The courses are taught by globally recognized experts in these areas. The instructors and participants were overwhelmed with what NMC has to offer – Facilities, people, assets and most importantly, the vision of our institution. As part of this training, several students in the Freshwater Studies and Marine Technology programs participated. Presidents from these companies are offering complete support including course development, equipment donation/use, job recruiting/placement in connection with our Engineering Technology/Marine Technology degree, creating new opportunities for students and high value job opportunities for graduates. Nader Riahi, President of Kongsberg Mesotech was particularly impressed by two of our students, Chris Horvath and John Lutchko. He felt they would be leaders in this industry and if they were to ever start a company on their own, he would provide them with the support and technology to get started. His words were “whatever they need, you let me know”.
These people want NMC to be the premier place for advanced marine technology training in the US and one of a few globally. This professional development program clearly showcased NMC’s many attributes to a wide audience.
