Ben grew up in Newport, Oregon and graduated from the University of Oregon with a BS in Sociology. After graduating from the U of O he lived in Park City UT for eight years where he was a self proclaimed “ski bum” and ski lift technician. In 2003 Ben moved to Traverse City to attend the Great Lakes Maritime Academy. Since graduating in 2006, he has been sailing on a variety of ocean going ships. This last January Ben earned his Chief Engineers License.
His wife Genevieve is the Media Specialist (librarian) at West Senior High, and they have two children: Charlie 6, and Matthew 4. Ben says they are all very excited for him to be home more with his new position. (more…)

Jenny grew up in Grand Rapids and moved to Traverse City 30 years ago to be with her husband, Paul. They will celebrate their 30th anniversary this September! She graduated from Grand Rapids Junior College, and Central Michigan University with a degree in Business Administration. She previously worked at the local Home Builders Association as the Membership and Education Director and prior to that West Senior High School as a Para-professional working with technology.
Jenny is the proud mother of four children – Joseph, 26, Emma, 25, David, 22 and William, 20. She also calls herself a “recovering hockey mom” as she spent 20 years supporting her children’s participation in local hockey programs through their high school years. She does not have any grandchildren – but is the proud grandmother to a couple of very handsome grand dogs!

Are you or a dependent planning a trip outside of the Traverse City area? If you are enrolled in NMC’s medical insurance, you have coverage through Priority Health to a service called Assist America. If a member, spouse or dependent becomes ill or injured while traveling more than 100 miles from home or is in a foreign country, Assist America provides support with medical referrals, monitoring, evacuation, repatriation and more. If you’ve been through the Welcome Center on the main campus lately you have probably noticed the large artwork hanging there.
It’s the work of NMC Professor Emeritus Paul Welch, who was the chair of the art department for 30 years. The work, “Face to face” was entered in Art Prize 2013, and is a 24 foot by 18 foot version of the original work that Welch completed in 2011. Britten Banner of Traverse City produced the banner, which will hang in the Welcome Center through May.
Craig Mulder, Director of Information Technology Services, has been selected as the Fall 2013 NMC Employee of the Semester. Craig has displayed the values of Northwestern Michigan College by performing two very high level jobs for three and a half years, doing an excellent job to save the college thousands of dollars.
