Red Flag is a system at NMC to help students, faculty, and staff to report when a NMC student is experiencing emotional, psychological, or safety issues. Here are some things that are typical things to report:
- Questionable or suspicious acts or behavior
- Knowledge of information or incidents that could cause harm
- Knowledge of illegal actions, assaults, and/or drug or alcohol sale or usage
- Expressions by others of feelings of depression, reduction of self worth, and/or uselessness
If you are not sure whether to make a report in Red Flag, you can call 231-995-1118 to consult with a NMC counselor.
If you are concerned about a student, please enter the information into Red Flag https://report.myredflag.com/reporter/login/school/nmc if you have these types of concerns or need further assistance.
If you make a report, a member of the Behavior Incident Report Team (BIRT) will contact you to discuss the matter further.

The US Constitution influences our lives more than two hundred years after it was ratified. Yet many Americans don’t know much about it. That is why Congress established Constitution Day, a time to teach future generations about the foundation of our democracy.
Join NMC History Department faculty for a discussion forum at 6 p.m., Monday, September 17 in Scholars Hall Room 102. Topics include:
- Who really elects our president?
- The Constitution, the election and you!
- Did the Civil War lay the groundwork for the War on Terror?

Osterlin Library is pleased to announce our new leisure reading collection, made possible through funding from the NMC Barbecue.
This collection of 100 books sits in the main library lobby in a newly purchased display kiosk. Titles by popular fiction authors like James Patterson, Clive Cussler, and Janet Evanovich grace the shelves, but there are also works by Anne LaMott and Elie Wiesel as well as biographies like Keith Richards’ Life. It is an eclectic, constantly changing mix of books, selected with students’ interests in mind. Come check out the collection today!

NMC students are invited to an open house at the NMC Fitness Center Thursday, August 30, noon-6:30 p.m.
In the new and improved facility, you’ll find new weight machines and spinning bikes, TVs to keep you moving, new carpet and fresh paint, a new welcome station, locker room improvements, expanded hours, and lower membership prices.
The NMC Fitness Center is located on the 2nd floor of the Rajkovich Physical Education Building. There’s always a fitness and exercise specialist available to assist you, and each membership begins with a fitness evaluation and instruction in proper use of all equipment which includes weight machine stations, cardio equipment, and dumbbells.
Hours of operation are Monday to Thursday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. NMC students (taking at least one credit class this fall) can enjoy unlimited use for the months of September through December for $50.

The seventh annual Mike McIntosh Memorial Truck and Car Show will be held, Saturday, September 8 at NMC’s Automotive Service Technology Building on Aero Park Drive, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The show is named for the late NMC Automotive instructor Mike McIntosh, who retired in 2004 after 34 years of service. McIntosh organized the first car show for the Automotive Program in 2004.
Owners are invited to enter their classic cars, 4X4s, dragsters, sports cars, modified late models, motorcycles and more. There is a $10 entry fee per vehicle. Trophies are awarded for best of show in each class. Admission free and the public is invited for food, a silent auction — including program vehicles — and door prizes for entrants. Proceeds benefit NMC’s Automotive Program. Sponsors include Canteen Services.
Student projects and vehicles are displayed in the Automotive Technology facility. The Michigan Community Blood Center is also on site with its blood bus for those eligible and willing to donate.
Show participants can register their classic car, 4X4, dragster, sports car, modified late model, motorcycle or other classic vehicle on-site beginning at 8 a.m. the day of the event.

College is about more than classes, and the fifth annual Pine Palooza student fair, set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 11 on the green outside East Hall, will show off the extracurricular side of college life.
NMC Student Services, student groups and local businesses will be on hand to share the opportunities and services they offer to NMC students. Free food, a DJ, henna artists and a photo booth will also be part of the event, sponsored by NMC Student Life.

It’s easy to do. Log in to your Self Service account, and choose the Personal Information Menu. The last item on the list is a link for “Text Message Opt In.”
There you can enter your cell phone number to sign up.
The system will be used only in situations in which it is vital to give immediate notification and instructions to the campus community. The contact information provided will be kept confidential and not used for any other purpose. In order to minimize the out-of-pocket expense for NMC alert users, NMC will only issue emergency alert messages and limited test messages across this service.

All students, faculty, and staff of Northwestern Michigan College are required to have and display a valid parking permit if they park in the college lots on main campus during the fall and spring semesters. All academic students and NMC faculty and staff are eligible to recieve one parking decal at no cost. Additional and replacement decals are available at a cost of $10.00 per decal.
Student permits are available at the Records/Registion/Cashier’s Office, the Admissions office and the Welcome Center. Apartment resident decals are available in the West Hall Auxiliaries Office.
Decals must be placed in the lower left corner on the driver’s side front window. Please discard expired decals. Get your permit today…before the rush!!

Welcome!
The new semester is beginning–students are buying books and checking out the campus. Part of many of NMC’s departments preparation for the new semester is hiring student workers to be a part of our various teams.
Working at the college comes with many great opportunities. It is awesome to be able to work where you go to school in a fun atmosphere, you are instantly connected to the many resources on campus, it looks great on a resume, but most importantly it is a safe environment to grow professionally with people who really believe in investing in you.

NMC now has a license with Films on Demand. This is a digital repository and subscription database of academic videos, streamed on demand, to use for research, homework, course presentations, etc. This repository allows you to either play the whole video or select specific segments. The collections available are: Health & Medicine, Humanities & Social Sciences, Science & Mathematics, and Business & Economics.
To Access:
1. Go to Osterlin Library on the NMC website
2. Select A-Z Databases & Resource List (Click here to go there)
3. Select Films on Demand
4. You are there! (Off-campus access requires login with your NMC ID and password).
This is available for use by anyone with an NMC ID and password (note that if you want to use the playlist or the favorites list you will need to create a username and password).

Big Brothers Big Sisters has programs conveniently located at Traverse Heights Elementary, Central Grade School, and Eastern Elementary.
Being a Big is simple, really. Just by spending your lunch hour with a child once each week for at least one school year, you can make a difference. And it’s not all about helping the child study. Here’s some information about health insurance offered to students at Northwestern Michigan College.
As you may know, Health Care Reform has created great changes in the insurance industry in the past couple of years. Student health insurance is undergoing those changes beginning this year. The policy now covers you for what is called “essential services” which includes preventive care and routine care. The policy also covers your prescriptions up to the policy maximum.
The plan has changed and we encourage you to review it to see if the policy will meet your needs. You can view the policy at www.sas-mn.com – under COLLEGE click on FIND MY SCHOOL and follow the link to Northwestern Michigan College. You can view the new policy under “2012-2013 brochure”.
