Important Notice to all NMC students for spring semester 2013

Please read carefully as there are changes affecting student accounts

Payment due date for spring 2013 is January 3, 2013.  For information on how to make a payment or set up a payment plan, please go to: www.nmc.edu/cashier.  Payment by electronic check (from savings or checking) is the most efficient option and if saved as a refund option provides the fastest refund possible.

To pay online, log into MyNMC at www.nmc.edu and choose Self-Service

To apply for financial aid, go to:  www.fafsa.gov and submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

NMC’s drops for non-payment have changed:

You are responsible for payment of all charges by the payment due date or the due dates on your payment plan. NMC may drop your enrollment in classes if you owe a balance after January 3, 2013. However, there are circumstances where, as a courtesy, we will not drop your classes. You must drop any classes that you do not plan to attend, otherwise, you will be responsible for payment of charges incurred and will receive a grade at the end of the semester. All prior semester balances must be paid before registering for future semesters.

NEW: There will be only one auto-drop for non-payment, scheduled for approximately January 7.    Even if you don’t receive a notification as described below, please check and manage your account status and class schedule regularly, especially between now and the 100% refund dates listed on your class schedule for each course.

  • A couple of weeks prior to payment due date, we will send an email notification to students who are flagged “to be dropped”.   If you register after the email you will not get a warning.  If you do not plan to attend, please drop your own classes.
  • When the auto-drop runs (approximately January 7), an email will go to all students affected explaining how they can re-register.  You will have to make payment or have applied for financial aid.   Because the auto-drop process will not run again for this semester, it is important to note that you are responsible for any balances not covered by financial aid.
  • An email will also go to those who had balances due, but whose classes were not dropped.   This is to notify you that there will be no more drops, and you are responsible to complete the financial aid process or make full payment.

NEW: Students who are eligible for financial aid do not need to set up a payment plan.   If NMC has received your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and it is not flagged as ineligible due to loan defaults, satisfactory academic progress suspension or other issues, you are not required to set up a payment plan.  Please monitor your Self-Service and NMC email daily and respond to all requests for information.  All students are responsible to pay for any balances not covered by financial aid.  You are responsible to manage your own enrollment (for example:  dropping classes you do not plan to attend/pay for).

Please understand your federal loan limits and pay for balances in excess of your potential aid:

Click on this link for:  Federal Student Loan Limits.   Withdrawal or non-attendance can result in loss of financial aid.  If your financial aid is completely in place (authorized), you can charge against the available balance at the NMC Bookstore from December 17 through January 24.  Contact Student Financial Services for more information on your financial aid eligibility.

THINGS TO REMEMBER:

  • Pay by January 3, set up a payment plan and make payments on time, or apply for financial aid in time for NMC to receive your FAFSA by January 3 (it takes up to 2 weeks).
  • Drop classes you don’t plan to attend by the 100% refund date for each class printed on the student schedule.
  • Watch your NMC email and check your account and schedule after the auto-drop to make sure you know where you stand.
  • Pay your balances on time and/or make sure to follow the financial aid process to completion.
  • Attend your classes to completion, taking full advantage of all of the help available to succeed. (Withdrawal or non-attendance can result in loss of financial aid.  Contact Student Financial Services for information.)

PTK sponsors Action! Dec. 18 at Milliken

A free screening of Earth Days, a documentary about the grassroots beginnings of Earth Day and the environmental movement, will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 18 in Milliken Auditorium as the centerpiece of Action! an event sponsored by NMC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.

While the film focuses on the environmental movement, the goal of Action! is to empower and inspire young people that their personal action, of any kind, can make a difference in their community and the world, said event organizer Jessica Abfalter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges.

“The key to social change is youth movement,” Abfalter said. “As a diverse group of students, Phi Theta Kappa also recognized the many ways an individual could have an impact on their community or even the world. We created ‘Action!’ from our own experiences with volunteerism and popular culture, sharing the inspiration we gained through film and connecting area youth with local opportunities for action in an interactive, artistic setting.”

Doors open at 6 p.m. The pre-show Action! Fair includes free admission to the Dennos Museum Center, now featuring the video art of Chinese artist Miao Xiaochu,n and opportunities to network with local advocacy and activist groups including  H.O.P.E. (Helping Owners with Pet Expenses) NMC PRIDE, the Native American Student Association, 4-H Michigan State University Extension and Bay Bucks local currency.

Participants are also invited to enjoy complimentary food, local music, and browse entries in the recycled art contest. A $50 downtown Traverse City gift card will be awarded to the middle school, high school, and college student with the highest ranking creation.

The film will begin at 7:30 p.m. followed by the announcement of the recycled art contest winners. To enter artwork, please see submission details online or email nmcptk@gmail.com for submission details.

Among other leaders of the modern environmental movement, Earth Days features NMC communications instructor Stephanie Mills. In 1969 Mills catapulted to prominence when she decried overpopulation and natural resource exploitation in a commencement address and vowed never to have children.

Get your flu shot

The FLU is here.  The first cases of Influenza A diagnosed one week ago at Munson Medical Center.  Influenza vaccine is still available at Health Services for $15.  Be smart and avoid the flu during final exams.  Get vaccinated!

Food for Thought delivers

NMC business students held a massive distribution day for area food pantries Friday, Nov. 16, delivering the 18,000 food and household items they collected over the past month just in time for Thanksgiving.

Distribution Day

The Food for Thought Fill the Pantries food drive was organized by Kristy McDonald’s Business 231 students as a semester-long project enabling them to learn how to communicate professionally while also helping the community.

As reported in the Traverse City Record-Eagle, food insecurity has become the region’s largest social issue. From 2007 through 2011, food pantry visits in the Grand Traverse area climbed by 83 percent.

Students invited 30 area businesses to conduct internal food drives, emphasizing the

importance of healthy food. Food was also collected on campus, with the Dental Assisting Program winning the prize for most donations, at more than 900. Students also held collection days at Walmart, two Tom’s Food Market locations and at Family Video locations. Cash donations –totaling $3,000 — were also collected online. The class thanks everyone who donated and sponsored the event. Happy Thanksgiving!

Turn up the music

NMC Hip Hop presents Turn up the Music, a free demonstration at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 3 in Milliken Auditorium.

Hip-hop dance is movement to hip-hop music, allowing an individual to create their personal swagger, instructor Joedy Annis said. NMC hip-hop teaches rhythm and style to create just that. The NMC swagger crew has been on the scene for ten yearsm creating amazing choreography and freestyle movements. Audiences should be prepared for crazy hip hop moves, Annis said.

NMC Hip Hop dance is offered as a for-credit class through the physical education department as well as a non-credit option through Extended Education.

Get your flu shot before you head home for Thanksgiving

Don’t let the flu get you down this holiday season.  Get the flu vaccine before you leave for the Thanksgiving Break.

Statistically, many students contract the flu sitting around the holiday table with loved ones and then bring the illness back to campus to share with friends, co-eds, and faculty.  Stop the Flu.  Get Vaccinated.  Influenza vaccine available at Health Services, LB 106, for $15.  Just walk in.

Send us your photos of NMC and win free stuff

We’re launching NMC in photos, a way for anyone on campus to become an unofficial NMC photographer. Just snap and submit your candid images of life on campus. A caption’s nice, too. Accepted photos will be posted at nmc.edu/photos, where you can also read the fine print about what size photo and more.

And in November, we’re going to have a little contest.  Submit your photo(s) and not only will we post the best ones, but the ones judged to be the top three will win prizes.

First prize is a $50 gas gift card.

Second prize is a $25 gift card to the NMC Bookstore.

Third prize is $15 to use in the cafeteria or any of the Sodexo food stands.  Grab something to eat, have some coffee, go nuts.

All photos submitted before midnight December 1, 2012 are eligible to win.

Thanks in advance for sharing all that you can find here at NMC.

Kudos to Ed Blough, Gary Schettek, Kim Goll, Brian Lewis, Andrew Durecki, Levi Berlin and Aaron Aldridge

In preparation for the Veterans Day event on campus, Ed Blough, Gary Schettek, Kim Goll, Brian Lewis and student employees, Andrew Durecki, Levi Berlin and Aaron Aldridge did a great job cleaning up our flag pole area on Friday; unfortunately, high winds over the weekend blew a lot of leaves back into that area of campus.

We greatly appreciate the efforts they made on Friday, but were very grateful and impressed with how quickly they responded to our request to clean up the area again (just prior to the event). When our veterans and campus community arrived to the area, the grass looked like carpet… they did an incredible job and literally dropped everything they were doing in order to get the area cleaned up for the event – thank you!
