A Colorful Cast – new book tells history of visual arts in NW Michigan
TRAVERSE CITY — Copies of A Colorful Cast, a newly-published retrospective chronicling the rise of visual arts in the Grand Traverse Region and the legacy and rich history of the NMC Art Department, are now available for purchase.
Conceived by retired NMC art department chairman Paul Welch, written by local author Heather Shumaker, stewarded by NMC archivist Ann Swaney and designed by NMC Visual Communications students, A Colorful Cast highlights the men and women who created a wave of visual arts in the Grand Traverse Region and celebrates the role that NMC played in building regional interest in visual arts. The galleries, the studios and the festivals that now draw thousands to our region all were influenced by the vibrant learning environment of Northwestern Michigan College and the artists who have gathered and learned here.
Copies of A Colorful Cast are $29.95 and are available at the NMC Bookstore, Dennos Museum Store, at Horizon Books in downtown Traverse City and through the NMC Foundation by calling (231) 995-1021. Proceeds from the sale of A Colorful Cast will go to support visual arts scholarships at Northwestern Michigan College.

“Understanding Autism’ lecture
TRAVERSE CITY — A panel of experts from Michigan State University will discuss “Understanding Autism” as the Your Health Lecture Series revisits Traverse City on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
The program will be at 9 a.m. in the Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College and streamed live online at nmc.edu/video. Panelists include:
- Sarah N. Douglas, Ph.D., assistant professor in MSU College of Social Sciences’s Department of Human Development and Family Studies
- Laurie L. Linscott, M.A.,director of Child Development Laboratories in MSU College of Social Science’s Department of Human Development and Family Studies
- Anthony J. Richtsmeier, M.D., associate professor in MSU College of Human Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics and Human Development
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that one in 68 American children are identified with autism spectrum disorders. Expanded awareness of the condition and the application of new diagnostic criteria have contributed to the increase in prevalence over the past 40 years. The panel will discuss its effect on individuals, their families, and the health care system.
The Your Health Lecture Series is a collaborative community event sponsored by Northwestern Michigan College, Munson Medical Center, and Michigan State University College of Human Medicine – Traverse City campus.
The Dennos Museum Center is located at 1701 E. Front St. in Traverse City. The lecture will also be recorded and archived for later viewing.

NMC earns spot on national “Best for Vets” list
Northwestern Michigan College has been selected by Military Times magazine for its “Best for Vets: Colleges 2015” list recognizing NMC’s commitment to providing opportunities to America’s veterans.
NMC was ranked 68th out of the top 100, four-year schools nationwide. The college was placed in that group because NMC now offers three baccalaureate degrees. Other notable schools in that category include the University of Michigan which was ranked 56th. (more…)
GirlTECH
Grand Traverse area girls will learn how to make strides in non-traditional careers at the thirteenth annual GirlTECH Friday, November 21, 2014 at NMC’s Parsons-Stulen Building.
GirlTECH was developed to encourage high school girls enrolled in any Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District school to consider non-traditional careers, defined as those careers in which women comprise 25 percent or less of the workforce.
Multiple speakers will discuss their career paths network with students. Non-traditional students from NMC and the TBA Career-Tech Center will present students with information about local training programs for high school junior and seniors and NMC programs.
Event sponsors include NMC, the American Association of University Women, Traverse Bay Area Career-Tech Center, Benzie Area Zonta Club and the Zonta Club of Leelanau County.

NMC Acapella Club to host bake sales
The NMC Acapella Club will host bake sales on both November 10 and 12, from noon-5 p.m. in the Welcome Center of the Health and Science Building.

ROV pilot technician open house
TRAVERSE CITY — NMC will host an open house for prospective students interested in a new, short-format ROV pilot technician certificate program at 6 p.m. Nov. 18 in the Parsons-Stulen Building on the Aero Park campus.
Classes for the ten-week program begin Jan. 12. Students will learn the basic skills and competencies required to gain entry-level employment in the offshore marine industry as a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Pilot Technician. Graduates of the program will find:
- Global opportunities for employment in an extremely fast growing industry
- Immediate industry interviews on site upon successful completion (presently scheduled for March 19-20, 2015)
- Starting salaries range from $40,000–$50,000 with excellent benefit packages
- Applied training in electronics, hydraulics, safety, and mechanical/ROV systems
- Industry-aligned curriculum following International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) guidelines included in IMCA R 002 and IMCA R 004 standard
Highly-trained instructors have experience in the industry. Training competencies can be applied toward credit at NMC for completion of Marine Technology degrees. Prospective students must be able to obtain a U.S. passport and Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card prior to enrollment.
Food will be provided. Interested students are asked to RSVP online at nmc.edu/rovtech.

The Dennos proposes exhibitions to potentially travel to museums in China
Northwestern Michigan College’s Dennos Museum Center Executive Director, Eugene Jenneman will leave for China on November 8 for a week of visits in Beijing, Qingdao and Shanghai with artists and colleagues, before attending a conference in Nanjing, China, being organized by the Nanjing Museum and the American Federation for the Arts in New York, November 17-20, 2014. The week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education and celebrates the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.
