As we welcome our students back to school for the 2014-2015 school semester, we invite you to sign up for our Emergency Text Notifications through Code Red. These text notifications are sent to your phone whenever there is an immediate need to alert the student population about a situation concerning our campuses.
This can include: snow days, lock downs related to incidents, inclement weather warnings, etc.

Intramural flag football and open recreation for students
NMC Intramural Flag Football starts Monday, Sept. 15. A team captains meeting will take place on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. in the West Hall Cafeteria. Students looking for a team to play on can contact Jim Szur, NMC Open Recreation and Intramural Supervisor at jszur@nmc.edu or call 995-1199.
Open recreation volleyball in the NMC Gym starts Monday, Sept. 8, at 5:30 p.m.
Open recreation basketball in the NMC Gym is under way, Monday/Wednesday/Friday, noon – 2 p.m. and on Tuesday/Thursday nights 8-10 p.m.

At NMC, we want to provide ever-expanding opportunities for global education so this fall we’re launching the NMC Global Endorsement. The Global Endorsement is a voluntary, official endorsement on your transcript that certifies you have gone beyond normal expectations to analyze, interact, and develop a global awareness and understanding.
It’s easy too! All you have to do is apply for the Global Endorsement, earn points from each of three categories (academic classes, experiential learning, and special events), and you’re on your way to redefining what classroom means to YOU!
Interested parties sought for creating an NMC Rowing Club student group
Interested in joining a possible new NMC Rowing Club student group? Not sure about rowing and want to learn more? An information session will be held on Tuesday, September 9 at 4 p.m. in the West Hall Conference room.
In addition, the Lake Leelanau Rowing Club (LLRC) has scheduled an Open Rowing session for any interested NMC students on September 6 from 9 a.m. till noon at the Fountain Point Resort (LLRC rowing site), 990 South Lake Leelanau Drive, Lake Leelanau, MI 49653.

Great Lakes Great Chefs Dinner with NMC Culinary Students to be held October 3
This special event is a unique opportunity to observe Great Lakes Culinary Institute students and instructors learning authentic Chinese cooking techniques from Chef Candice Lee. Lee and the students will be joined by Chef Harlan “Pete” Peterson, former owner and chef of the legendary Tapawingo restaurant in Ellsworth. (more…)

NMC students and staff are invited to take part in helping the following organizations on the Day of Caring as part of our commitment to community Service Learning:
•Alliance for the Great Lakes (beach clean up @ Bryant Park)
•Habitat for Humanity (home construction@ the Depot Neighborhood)
• Women’s Resource Center (painting offices at GT Commons)
Day of Caring is a hands-on experience where volunteer teams are matched with local non-profit agencies to complete meaningful projects that fulfill agency and community needs.

Military & Veteran Outreach Services support third annual Traverse City Patriot Game

Area new car dealerships have begun selling T.C. Patriot Game shirts today. This is the third year that the annual football clash between Central and West high schools will become a way to honor local veterans and those who have died while serving in the military.
This year Central supporters will wear red shirts, while those backing West will don blue shirts. Organizers say they hope to have both sides of Thirlby Field flooded with a sea of red and blue shirts. The contest between the two schools is the biggest football event of the year with the stadium filled to capacity. It will be held Friday, September 12.
A ceremony will be held before the game to honor northern Michigan veterans and give special recognition to those who have been killed in recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Veterans will be allowed into the game again this year at no charge. (more…)

Chul Hyun Ahn creates Infinite Space at the Dennos Museum Center
The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present the exhibition Chul Hyun Ahn: Infinite Space, September 21 – January 4, 2015.
Korean artist Chul Hyun Ahn creates sculptures utilizing light, color, and illusion as physical representations of his investigation of infinite space. Ahn’s interest in the gap between the conscious and subconscious compels him to construct illusionistic environments providing a space for contemplation. Ahn’s sculpture urges the viewer to consider man’s boundless ability for physical and spiritual travel while exploiting illusions of infinity and the poetics of emptiness. (more…)
East meets West in a “Paper as Sculpture” exhibit at the Dennos Museum Center
The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present the exhibition Li Hongbo & Matt Shlian: Stacked and Folded – Paper as Sculpture September 21 – January 4, 2015. The exhibition brings together a Chinese and an American artist to showcase the inventive use of paper in creating sculpture. (more…)
Ken Scott’s photography to be featured at the Dennos Museum Center
The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present the exhibition The Leelanau Conservancy through the Lens of Ken Scott, September 21 – October 26, 2014. The exhibition is being presented in collaboration with the Leelanau Conservancy.www.LeelanauConservancy.org
In celebration of its 25th Anniversary, the Leelanau Conservancy commissioned landscape photographer Ken Scott to take pictures of the natural areas and farm land it has preserved on the Leelanau peninsula. Ken, self-taught, has been photographing nature for more than twenty years. (more…)
Join the Vocal Jazz Ensemble today!
VJE is a small ensemble of men’s and women’s voices that rehearses and performs vocal jazz works in a variety of styles including standards, swing, ballads, Latin and contemporary. Students will develop skills in vocal jazz styles, blending harmonies, microphone technique, improvisation and jazz theory. This course can be taken for academic credit or through the Extended Education program (more affordable).
