The class will also host an evening version of this forum on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at Jolly Pumpkin on the peninsula at 7 p.m. (more…)

NMC Rowing Club in The Leelanau Chase

rowing club 2The NMC Rowing Club participated in the Leelanau Chase, their first official timed race.  The Hawk Owls team of Brian Kindt, Pierce Thomas, Kim Kelderhouse, Noelle Sieloff and the cox Micah Thoreson was timed at 11:38 for 2.5K.  In addition, the club assisted the Lake Leelanau Rowing club with parking and event timing for the regatta that had over 400 downstate high school rowers​.  It was a great opportunity for the NMC Rowing Club to gauge their progression after only five training sessions together. SVSU defeats NMC Soccer Club

soccer-ballThe Hawk Owls fell 2-1 to Saginaw Valley State University Soccer Club, despite dominating the second half.  Going down 2-0 early in the match, NMC took control of the match and scored on a free kick to pull within 1 goal.  NMC then put shot after shot on goal, twice hitting the cross bar and numerous others just missing wide or over the top.  In the end, NMC could not score and SVSU held on for the win.

Next Saturday, NMC Soccer Club plays their last match of the fall season, tentatively scheduled for 2 p.m. vs Cornerstone JV at the Traverse City Coast Guard Fields.   (more…)

It’s Our World: Artists Inspired by Children’s Visions of the Future, opening Nov. 1

BigDraw4-JoyceAndGlennAs part of The Big Draw – Grand Traverse, the Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College presents the exhibition, It’s Our World: Artists Inspired by Children’s Visions of the Future, November 1, 2014 – January 4, 2015. The exhibition features five local artists–Dewey Blocksma, Nancy Crisp, Nancy Nash, Joyce Petrakovitz, and Glenn Wolff–inspired by a child’s artwork. Each artist chose one or more drawings created by a young visitor during Big Draw Day on October 4, to incorporate and recreate in the medium of their choice. Children ages 4-12 created drawings in response to questions about keeping the Earth clean as part of this year’s Big Draw theme, It’s Our World. The exhibition will feature the artists’ interpretations, the original drawings from the children, and a digital slideshow of drawings and events that took place as part of The Big Draw–Grand Traverse. Rowing Regatta this Sunday will feature four NMC Rowing Club members

rowing_crewLake Leelanau Rowing Club is hosting a rowing regatta 8 a.m.-2 p.m., this Sunday, October 26, with over 400 downstate high school rowers, their parents and masters rowers coming up to race each other as well as four Traverse City High School rowers and four NMC college rowers.

All regatta info and race times are on the national regatta calendar website: www.regattacentral.com/regattas. Click on Leelanau Chase for participating schools and clubs, and all race times.

Coming to NMC – the History of Rock and Roll!

rock n rollThe music department is offering a new course – MUS 129 History of Rock and Roll – this spring semester.

In this course students will study the development of rock music styles from its roots to the present, watch historical footage and listen to musical examples of each musical period.

MUS 129 is a Group 1 Course and will satisfy three credits of your Group 1 Humanities requirement. Come join us! (more…)

Red Ribbon Day takes place Oct. 27

When you get your ribbon, you’ll also get a cup of coffee (the “legal drug”) on us! Come to the Welcome Center in the Health and Science building from 8-11 a.m.

Community College Week and NISOD are proud to announce the annual Scott Wright Student Essay Contest in honor of Scott Wright, past editor of Community College Week (1995–2000), recipient of the 1998 Award for Excellence in Higher Education Journalism, and the reporter who brought national attention to developmental education and the unique mission community colleges possess in providing an accessible education. Third annual Choral Invitational

TRAVERSE CITY — More than 250 high school choir students will participate in the third annual Choral Invitational  Wednesday, October 29, on NMC’s main campus. 

Nine choirs from Benzie Central, Elk Rapids, Kingsley, Leland, Lake Leelanau St. Mary’s,Glen Lake, St. Francis, Gaylord and Grayling high schools will spend the day on campus, learning and rehearsing music together, touring the campus, and attending performances of NMC faculty, music majors, and audio tech students.

The invitational culminates in an “Informance” at 6 p.m. in Milliken Auditorium. The public is invited to attend to the informal performance, or come listen to rehearsals during the day.

Joan Belgrave brings Dinah Washington to the Dennos

Joan BelgraveThe Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present the Detroit based Jazz vocalist Joan Belgrave in Joan Belgrave sings Dinah Washington: featuring the Lisa McCall Dancers on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 8:00 PM in Milliken Auditorium. Calling herself the “Queen of the Blues” and considered “the most popular black female recording artist of the ’50s,” Dinah Washington, was born Ruth Lee Jones (1924 – 1963). She was recognized mainly as a jazz vocalist, though she performed and recorded in a wide variety of styles including blues, R&B, and traditional pop music. Ain’t Misbehavin, Unforgettable, What a Diff’rence a Day Makes, Teach Me Tonight, and Please Send Me Someone to Love were among her many hit songs. (more…)
