The Dennos Museum Center is offering art patrons an opportunity to purchase original works of art by talented artists in the region in the museum’s 5th annual Small Works art sale from May 2-5, 2013.
Artists are being invited to submit up to 10 works of art in any media with measurements no greater than 5” x 7” x 5”. All art work will be priced at $50 or less. The size restrictions have changed this year to allow for more small pottery and sculptures.
The Small Works Sale has been organized to benefit artists and provide art patrons the opportunity to acquire works by artists in a price range accessible to many collectors.
There is no application fee or jury process for the sale. If the work of art meets the size and price parameters it will be allowed in the sale.
The Museum’s goal for the sale is to provide artists with additional sales opportunities and encourage patrons to buy original art at an affordable price. This is the fifth year of the Small Works sale. Last year 110 artists brought in about 1,000 works to sell. The sale was a great success with over $7,000 in gross sales.
The Small Works sale, open to the public, will begin with the sale and reception from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Thursday, May 2. The sale will continue Friday, May 3rd and 4th from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm and Sunday, May 9, from 1:00 – 5:00 pm. There is no admission charge for the Small Works sale.

The Dennos Museum Center is open Monday to Saturday 10 AM to 5 PM, Thursday until 8 PM and Sundays 1-5 PM. Admission is $6.00 adults, $4.00 for children and free to museum members. At their regular April meeting, the Northwestern Michigan College Board of Trustees approved a second reading of a new college “Campus Expression Policy.”
NMC has always been committed to the free and lawful exercise of expressive activity, and that commitment is unchanged by this policy.
The policy is intended to allow for the expression of free speech in a civil manner and forbids NMC from limiting public expression of ideas based on the content or source of the ideas being expressed. This policy does not prevent public demonstration, protest, petition or similar activity.
The policy’s intent is to identify spaces for expressive activity, based upon the need to maintain an orderly and peaceful environment to ensure the mission and operation of the college. The policy was developed by NMC with input from counsel, campus safety and local law enforcement, and drafted to be consistent with that of similar policies in effect at other higher education institutions.
The restrictions in the policy are set to prevent a person or persons from assembling in a manner that prevents or obstructs the free movement of persons around the campus, free and normal use of college buildings and facilities or impedes the normal activities of the college.

· Bring your ID with you.
· Leave backpacks and other belongings in your car (we run out of lockers fast!)
· Know the name of your class and your instructor.
· Give yourself plenty of time—all tests must be finished when we close for the day.

Important Notice to all NMC students for summer semester 2013
(THERE IS STILL TIME TO REGISTER FOR SUMMER!)
Payment due date for summer is May 7, 2013.

NMC may drop your enrollment in classes if you owe a balance after May 7, 2013. However, there are circumstances where, as a courtesy, we will not drop your classes. You must drop any classes that you do not plan to attend, otherwise, you will be responsible for payment of charges incurred and will receive a grade at the end of the semester.
There will be one auto-drop for non-payment, around May 10. Please check and manage your account status and class schedule regularly, especially between now and the 100% refund dates listed on your class schedule for each course. Always check your NMC email for notifications and e-bills. There will be no paper bills.
You are responsible to manage your own enrollment (for example: dropping classes you do not plan to attend/pay for). Classes can only be dropped on NMC Self-Service or in person, not over the phone. If there is a hold preventing a drop, contact us to lift the hold. You will still have to drop the classes yourself.
Steps for summer:
- If you have already received financial aid this year in fall and/or spring, check on Self-Service to see if you have financial aid left for summer. Otherwise:
- Pay by May 7, set up a payment plan and make payments on time, or apply for financial aid in time for NMC to receive your FAFSA by January 3 (it takes up to 2 weeks).
- Drop classes you don’t plan to attend by the 100% refund date for each class printed on the student schedule.
- Watch your NMC email and check your account and schedule after the auto-drop to make sure you know where you stand.
- Pay your balances on time and/or make sure to follow the financial aid process to completion.
- Attend your classes to completion, taking full advantage of all of the help available to succeed. (Withdrawal or non-attendance can result in loss of financial aid. Contact Student Financial Services for information.)

The Sault Tribe Higher Education Department is currently offering numerous scholarships for the upcoming 2013/2014 academic year. Any Sault Tribe member is eligible to apply and each scholarship has various criteria requirements. Students can submit one essay and cover letter to apply for multiple scholarships. Several student employee positions are open in the Writing and Reading Center for the 2013-2014 school year. Students typically work 8-12 hours per week and the pay starts at $7.75 per hour. Training includes two days before the semester, online modules, and one-to-one observation and mentoring. Candidates must complete ENG 112 by the end of the summer semester. Applications are due by May 10th.
This job is not only for English majors. We welcome and encourage a broad variety of students to apply. This will help us assist students from all fields even more successfully. In addition, this is a fantastic opportunity for all students, no matter their intended job field. Working in the WRC builds experience in areas such as communication, interpersonal skills, tutoring, speaking, writing and academic discourse. The Writing and Reading Center is an academic community that presents daily challenges and interest. In addition to fulfilling work, there are many opportunities for working in a classroom setting and attending and presenting at state, regional, and international academic conferences with their peers.
Students who are most successful in this position not only have skills in writing, but are able to work well with other students and translate their ideas clearly. This job requires working with a wide variety of people and requires flexibility to shift through different writing situations. The Writing and Reading Center and the Osterlin Library will be participating in World Book Night (http://www.us.worldbooknight.org/) on April 23rd. World Book Night is a multi-national initiative to share engaging, readable books with a wide audience. We have some great books that we’re looking forward to giving away for free to students!
The Osterlin Library will have 20 copies of City of Thieves by David Benioff. City of Thieves is a novel set in WWII Russia – part adventure, part coming of age story. The author, David Benioff, is a co-creator and writer for HBO’s “Game of Thrones” series. The library will also have a surprise assortment of other books from the World Book Night list. Stop in after 6:00 pm to get your book – while supplies last!

The weather outside won’t remind anyone of summer, or even fall, but take a minute to think about how much fun you’re going to have this summer. Then think about how you can have all of that fun, and still have plenty of time to fit in a course or two at NMC. Summer’s a great time to take a class.
Fall registration is underway, too. Get your schedule set now before you leave for spring break, and you’ll have one less thing to do before the end of the semester when you get back.
