On Tuesday, March 10 at 6 p.m., the IAF is sponsoring at the State Theatre a free showing of the film, To Light a Candle, by Iranian-Canadian journalist and human rights activist Maziar Bahari. The film is 53 minutes long and will be followed by a panel discussion on Iran (that will include Jack Segal, adjunct instructor of Political Science.) Maziar Bahari was the subject of Jon Stewart’s 2014 film Rosewater that examined political life in Iran today.
To Light a Candle shows how the Baha’i minority in Iran is defying Iran’s brutal systematic religious persecution through non-violent resistance and educating their youth. It gives our community an opportunity to talk about freedom of religion and minority rights in Iran and the Middle East and how we can make our voices heard in support of education and religious tolerance. Microsoft Office has held the market for professional and individual word processing, presentations, and data recording for years and with good reason. No other software platform has been able to create or support a well-rounded and thorough product to seriously threaten their market share. Google through their Google Apps has taken the basic functionality of Microsoft Office products like Word and Excel an added a very unique feature that works well with the established Microsoft Office programs. The feature allows documents to be created in Drive or Microsoft Word, and then allow, people to work on the same document at the same time and see the changes made in real time. (more…)

TRAVERSE CITY — NMC received double good news last week, with announcements of both state and federal grant dollars to expand college programs.
On Feb. 24 NMC learned it will receive the largest program equipment grant in college history from the state of Michigan: $2.07 million for Engineering Technology, Marine Technology, Welding Technology, Nursing and Computer Information Technology programs. NMC is one of 18 community colleges around the state to share $50 million in skilled trade equipment funds. Gov. Rick Snyder said the program represents “an effort to help close a talent gap and meet a demand for good-paying jobs.”
NMC will match 25 percent of the grant funds, or $697,061, to bring the total cost to $2.77 million.
“This investment by both the state and NMC is substantial, and indicative of the significant role community colleges play in their local economies,” said NMC President Timothy J. Nelson.
In addition, the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center last week also received approval for $2 million in new federal funding, to be spent statewide. As the northern office of the MMTC, which provides training and other services to help businesses grow and improve, NMC’s Training Services division expects to see at least $75,000 starting July 1. More details will be available as that date approaches.

TRAVERSE CITY — Underwater archaeology enthusiasts will have a unique opportunity to train with instructors and students from around the world July 12-26, when NMC hosts the Nautical Archaeology Society’s 2015 International Field School.
Nautical archaeology is the specialized study of maritime technology (e.g., ships, boats and other craft). Based at NMC’s Great Lakes Campus on West Grand Traverse Bay, the NAS Field School will consist of taught courses and the supervised archaeological survey of a historic shipwreck in Northport, Grand Traverse Bay and an earlyArchaic site on the shore of an inland lake.
This is the fifth consecutive year NMC has been selected to host the field school. Based in the United Kingdom, the Nautical Archaeology Society is a non-government organization formed to further interest in underwater cultural heritage. The field school is open to anyone interested and no previous experience is necessary. Although scuba experience is not required, certified divers may dive as part of their field research.
The program is structured as follows:
Week One: Introduction to foreshore and underwater archaeology and the supervised survey of either a dry-land or underwater archaeological site
Week Two: A series of day-long specialty courses covering topics such as: archaeological surveying, artifact typology, ship and boat construction, flint knapping, Native American settlement in northwest Michigan, documentary research, underwater archaeological surveying and archaeological illustration.
