For a second year, the Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College has been awarded a contract by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to cover some of the costs of programming for students with disabilities enrolled at the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District, as well as throughout the region. Joining the partnership this year is Blackbird Arts, which will work with students as a follow up to their museum visit. (more…)

Veterans creative writing workshop

TRAVERSE CITY — A creative writing workshop for veterans will again be offered in spring semester, with the first monthly meeting set for 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, Jan. 8, in Scholars Hall room 103.

A time and day for future workshops will be determined at the Jan. 8 workshop. In addition, open office hours will be offered to veterans weekly, from 3 to 4 p.m. every Wednesday in Scholars Hall room 102. Veterans can get writing support for academic writing assignments or other writing projects.

NMC Fitness Center offers student discount memberships

Student FitnessThe NMC Fitness Center offers a student discount rate of $60 for the 4 month Spring term.  That is a 40% discount on the community rate.

Studies have shown that a regular fitness routine can help students earn better grades.  In 2013, Purdue University News reported current statistics on higher GPA’s from those students regularly using the fitness center.

Fall 2014 Dean’s List released

Congratulations to those who made the Dean’s Lists for the fall 2014 semester at Northwestern Michigan College! The lists below are organized by the student’s home county.

Published at the end of each term, the Dean’s List recognizes the outstanding academic achievement of full-time and part-time students. These students have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or above out of a possible 4.0 while taking twelve or more credits (full-time) or between six and eleven credits (part-time).

Jinwon Chang’s Art Installation opens at the Dennos Museum Center

Jinwon Chang HWEH - GEEH Dennos Museum Center installationThe Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition HWEH – GEEH Returning Again an installation by Jinwon Chang. The exhibition will be on view through May 17, 2015.

The imagery for the exhibition Hweh – Geeh was inspired by three near death experiences in Jinwon Chang’s life, each as a result of drowning; at age 4 in a river, at age 10 in a swimming pool, and in high school at the sea. These traumatic events were the catalyst that resulted in Jinwon creating imagery based on aquatic creatures and vessels able to survive in water. In their suspended state, as installed in the exhibition, they become for him floating self-portraits. (more…)

Second City to perform at Dennos Museum Center

Tickets are $35 advance, $40 at the door and $30 for museum members plus ticket processing fees. A happy holiday for 31 NMC student families

Gift bagsTRAVERSE CITY — Northwestern Michigan College has wrapped up another successful holiday Giving Tree program, making the season merry for 31 NMC student families.

Shepherded by the NMC Foundation, NMC students were invited to apply for the program, now in its fourth consecutive year, in October. Participation was voluntary for NMC staff and fellow students. The NMC Student Government Association sponsored 10 individuals.

Gifts were returned to the Foundation last week and distributed to individuals this week. A total of 85 individuals received gifts.
