Passport Student Lecture Series continues April 16 with focus on Egypt

Egypt picNMC International Services and Service Learning presents their Passport Student Lecture Series for April with international student Abdalla Elhadad who will speak to attendees about Egypt. The lecture will take place on Thursday, April 16 from 12:15 – 1:00 pm in Founders Hall, room 110. Guests are invited to bring lunch and/or coffee to enjoy while they listen.

The Passport Student Lecture Series is a chance to explore other cultures through the experiences of NMC international students who will give presentations about their home countries. Information during their lectures can include culture, food, fashion, recreation, religion, gender issues, politics, current events, etc. (more…)

Sexual Assault Awareness Week (S.A.A.W.) runs April 6-10

SAAWDuring the month of April, the Student Life office, along with Residence Life, will be holding a Sexual Assault Awareness Week (S.A.A.W.). There will be events throughout the week focused on raising awareness around sexual misconduct, specifically on college campuses. This is the first year that NMC will be holding a week of events during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This week will offer unique opportunities for students, faculty and staff.

Bob James Live at the Milliken Auditorium CD released

BOB JAMES LIVE - Cover 75The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College and Tappan Zee Records are pleased to announce the USA release of the new CD Bob James Live at the Milliken Auditorium as recorded in concert with the Grammy Award winning Jazz pianist Bob James and the Bob James Quartet on May 3, 2014.

The CD features Bob James – Piano with Perry Hughes – Guitar, Clarence Penn – Drums and Nathaniel Phillips – Bass. Nagata Shachu to perform at Dennos Museum Center

Nagata Shachu DrummersThe Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present Nagata Shachu a taiko (Japanese drum) ensemble, on Friday April 17, 2015 at 8:00 in the Milliken Auditorium of the Dennos Museum Center. Tickets for the concert are $27 in advance ($24 for museum members) and $30 at the door. While firmly rooted in the folk drumming traditions found throughout Japan, Nagata Shachu has worked to rejuvenate and redefine this ancient art form ensuring its relevance for the present. The ensemble produces challenging and dynamic works that seek to create a new voice for the taiko. (more…)

Applicants invited for Board of Trustees vacancy

TRAVERSE CITY — The Board of Trustees of Northwestern Michigan College invites registered voters of Grand Traverse County who are otherwise legally qualified to apply to fill the vacancy on the Board created by Cheryl Gore Follette’s resignation on March 23.

Michigan law requires the Board to appoint, within 30 days, a replacement trustee for a term until the next regular community college election. The appointment will expire on December 31, 2016.  The next regular election is in November 2016.

Commitments include but are not limited to the following:

  • Regular board meeting, typically the fourth Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m.
  • Board study sessions and committee meetings scheduled as required
  • Annual overnight Board retreat
  • Participation in other college functions including commencement, receptions, ceremonies, events
  • Travel periodically for purposes of professional development and representing the college at various association meetings, with travel for trustee paid by NMC
  • This is a non-compensated position

2015 Barbecue projects to share $40,000

BBQ logo in red CUTOUTThe NMC Barbecue Board has approved nine projects that will share $40,300 in funds from this year’s 60th annual picnic under the pines, set for May 17.

College employees submit proposals for Barbecue funds to support program and equipment needs, contingent on funds raised that day. A subcommittee reviews and recommends proposals to the Barbecue Board, a group of NMC employees and community volunteers led by new president Gary Carlson. This year’s recipients are: (more…)
