Monks from the Mystical Arts of Tibet will introduce a special screening of the Academy Award-nominated film, Kundun, at the Milliken Auditorium on Monday, April 14, at 7:45 PM, with a live performance of the multi-phonic chanting featured in this fascinating film about the dramatic life of a young boy, discovered in one of the world’s remotest places, and destined to become the world-renowned Dalai Lama.
Directed by Martin Scorcese and written by Melissa Matheson, Kundun tells the true story of a young boy found living with a family of Tibetan farmers in a small hamlet, near that country’s border with China — and what happens when the two year-old child displays a remarkable ability to correctly identify the personal possessions of the recently deceased 13th Dalai Lama. What follows is the amazing story of the 14th Dalai Lama, from his escape from Tibet to his years of exile as a spiritual leader and advocate for peace. Kundun is scored by Philip Glass’s unique electronic compositions, and was nominated for four academy awards.
The monks are at the Dennos Museum Center, April 14 -19, where they will create an intricate sand painting similar to the one in the film. (more…)

This information session is designed to increase awareness and knowledge about government internships/careers and build the next generation of government employees by covering topics that include the Federal Pathways program, application information and career opportunities. In its fourth year, TEDx Traverse City will host Game Changers: Designing Tomorrow on Wednesday, May 14. Many prominent alumni of the art department of Northwestern Michigan College will have their works displayed this spring at a one of a kind exhibition, hosted at The Traverse City Art and Design Studio from March 29 through May 31.
“Three Decades of Art of NMC” has been made possible by the efforts of NMC Professor Emeritus Paul Welch. Seeking to find an outlet for all of the great art, and great artists, produced by the college, Welch, who served as the chair of the NMC Art Department for more than 30 years, came up with the idea of an alumni art show. The support of community partners has helped bring that idea to life.
Four Northwestern Michigan College aviation students and three NMC nursing students are heading to South Africa during the college’s spring break for service learning projects. (more…)
This week, NMC has launched a brand-new interactive virtual tour. You can take a guided, virtual walking tour of the main campus, and visit all of NMC’s other sites as well. The tour also includes 360-degree photos and videos.

Spring Break Hours for campus dining services:
On March 28 only the Northwest Grind will be open from 7 a.m. till 2 p.m.
All campus dining will be closed until April 6, when they will reopen from 11 a.m. till 7 p.m.
Full schedule of normal operations will resume on April 7.
NMC has made the process of applying for scholarships easier than ever before. All you have to do is log in, fill out a short profile and our database will automatically match you with the scholarships you are eligible for.
All you have to do then is review your matches to see if there is any other required information you need to complete the process.

The Northwestern Michigan College Barbecue Board has selected the college programs that will share more than $44,000 in funding from the 59th annual Barbecue, set for May 18 on main campus.
College employees submit proposals for Barbecue funds to support program and equipment needs, contingent on funds raised that day. A subcommittee reviews and recommends proposals to the Barbecue Board, a group of 25 community volunteers. (more…)
