NMC Jazz Big Band to perform at Leelanau UnCaged

NMC’s Jazz Big Band will perform at the 9th Annual Leelanau UnCaged Festival on September 30. The Big Band will perform at 5:45 p.m. on Center Stage and will feature an appearance from former NMC Jazz Band directors Mike Hunter and Laurie Sears. Many of the members of NMC’s big Band are working professional musicians in the area with their own groups and are scheduled to perform other sets throughout the day.

3 on 3 Basketball Tournament for NMC students and staff

BasketballNMC Campus Life will be hosting a 3 on 3 basketball tournament on Friday, September 15 from 5:30-8 p.m. This tournament is open to all NMC students, staff and faculty and will be held at the outdoor basketball courts behind East Hall.

Teams must sign up by Thursday, September 14.

NMC Night at the Pit Spitters

Join fellow students, employees and alumni on Thursday, August 10 at 7:05 p.m for NMC Night at the Traverse City Pit Spitters. Tickets are free for current employees, alumni, and students. Tickets are $10 each for family members who would like to join.

Students, employees and alumni will receive a voucher for a hotdog and a soda. Additional vouchers may be purchased for family members for $5 each.

IAF @ Hagerty Center June 8: Nuclear arms control expert talks global threats, nonproliferation

IAF logoNMC’s International Affairs Forum concludes its 29th season on Thursday, June 8, 6:30 PM at the Hagerty Center with a timely discussion on nuclear weapons and nonproliferation. IAF will welcome Thomas Countryman for this in-person event with livestream available.

Thomas CountrymanThomas Countryman is Chairman of the Board of the Arms Control Association. The ACA, founded in 1972, is a nonpartisan NGO which analyzes key security issues and advises the executive branch, Congress and the public on choices to promote global security and reduce the risk that weapons of mass destruction will be used. Countryman retired from the Senior Foreign Service in January 2017 after 35 years of service. At that time, he served simultaneously as acting Undersecretary for Arms Control, and as Assistant Secretary for International Security and Nonproliferation, a position he held since September 2011. The ISN Bureau leads the US effort to prevent the spread of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. After serving in Belgrade, Washington and Cairo, he advised Ambassador Albright on Middle East affairs at the US Mission to the United Nations, and was Director for Near East affairs at the National Security Council.

Jack SegalJack Segal, a former senior U.S. diplomat and former IAF Board co-chair, will moderate the discussion. Segal has had a long career in arms control and nonproliferation. He served at the NSC as Director for Nonproliferation and Export Controls from 1999-2000. Prior to that, in Moscow, he was responsible for implementing a variety of arms control agreements. From 1986-87, he served as a State Department representative to the strategic weapons talks of the START negotiations with the USSR in Geneva. While there, he drafted the Agreement on Nuclear Risk Reduction with the USSR which was signed in 1987 and which continues to be honored by the U.S. and Russia today despite the current state of our relationship.

The event at the Hagerty Center is open to the public and will be available to livestream, including public Q & A. The event includes a welcome reception with light appetizers at 5:30 PM.

NMC’s Canticum Novum presents “Music of Love and Loss”

Dennos Spring Art Market

On Saturday, May 13 from 9:30a.m. to 4 p.m. the Dennos Museum Center will be hosting the Spring Art Market. Come celebrate spring and moms at the Dennos with fun museum programming! Over 20 Michigan artists who work in a range of media including ceramics, jewelry, printmaking, painting, glass, metal, mixed media, fiber and wood will be selling their pieces while the museum is open.

Theater 152 presents “An Evening with David Ives”

On Tuesday, May 2 at 3:30 p.m., Theater 152 students will present “An Evening of David Ives”—a selection of comic plays from All In The Timing, winner of the 1994 John Gassner Playwriting Award. The class performance will showcase the work of Theater 152 acting students. It will be held in the theater located in room 217 of Scholars Hall.
The running time is approximately one hour and ten minutes.

IAF to honor World Press Freedom with journalist/advocate & former White House correspondent

NMC’s International Affairs Forum will discuss press freedom around the world on Wednesday, May 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the Milliken Auditorium at the Dennos Museum Center. IAF will welcome to the stage career journalists Joyce Barnathan and Gene Gibbons. Joyce Barnathan was president of the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) for 15 years where she helped advocate for quality journalism on the forefront of a changing media landscape. Previously, Barnathan served as the executive editor, Global Franchise, for BusinessWeek. Before that, she served as the Asia regional editor and Hong Kong bureau manager.

Barnathan came to BusinessWeek from Newsweek, where she served as State Department correspondent, Moscow Bureau Chief, and Special Projects Correspondent covering presidential elections.

Barnathan holds a bachelor’s degree in Russian and Chinese studies and a master’s degree in Asian studies from Washington University, as well as a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri. She is the winner of five Overseas Press Club Awards, including three as part of BusinessWeek’s Asia team, as well as the National Headliner Award. She is a trustee of the Arthur F. Burns Fellowships Program and serves on the steering committee of the Global Forum for Media Development.

Barnathan is committed to strengthening the news media to ensure that we all enjoy vibrant, democratic societies.

Gene Gibbons covered Presidents Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Clinton during a 40-year career as a political journalist. Gibbons is a former Reuters’ chief White House correspondent and previously was a Washington-based United Press International (UPI) reporter.

Gibbons served on the board of the White House Correspondents Association and is a past president of the Radio-Television Correspondents Association. His career highlights include serving as a Presidential Debate panelist in 1992 and as a Joan M. Shorenstein Fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government in 2010. He has appeared on The PBS NewsHour and other telecasts. Gibbons has written and released a memoir entitled BREAKING NEWS Six Presidents – The Queen – A Pope: A Life in Journalism.

The event at Milliken Auditorium is open to the public and will be available to livestream, including a public Q&A. The event includes a welcome reception with refreshments at 5:30 p.m..

Marine Technology Society Ship to Shore

Join the NMC Marine Technology Society on Monday, April 24 at 10:30 a.m. in the Timothy J. Nelson Innovation Center room 106/107 for a live virtual tour of Schmidt Ocean Institute’ s new 360-foot R/V Falkor (too) during its current expedition researching deep-sea coral off the coast of Puerto Rico. This is a rare opportunity to explore a research vessel while it’s underway with a chance to talk to scientists, marine technicians, ROV pilots and crew. There will be food. All are welcome. Jazz Bands Spring Concert

The NMC Jazz Lab Band and Jazz Big Band will be performing their final concert this semester on April 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Milliken Auditorium. Selections by Niehaus, Yasinitsky, Hooper, Garling, Mingus, Goodwin, Beethoven, Shorter, Kubis, Jarvis, Barbieri, Lewis and Norman will be featured. The bands are hot and the music is cool so come on out and celebrate America’s premier art form: JAZZ! 

Doors open at 7:00pm and the show starts at 7:30pm with a brief intermission between groups!

Tickets at the door are $15 for Adults, $10 for Seniors and free for NMC students with their student ID. Tickets can be purchased at simpletix.com.

 

Commencement photo shoot May 5

Calling all graduates! Public Relations is looking for volunteers to have their photo taken before this year’s Commencement ceremony. We are planning to meet on Friday, May 5 at 3 p.m. in the Milliken Auditorium at the Dennos Museum. NMC President Nick Nissley will be on location with us so you can have your photo taken with him while discussing your post-graduation plans! As a bonus, you’ll get a sneak peek on the new Commencement setup we are unveiling this year. 

All graduates are welcome; bring yourself, your fellow graduates, your cap/gown/tassel and commemorate this moment! Photos will be shared with you afterwards.

If you aren’t graduating this year and plan to be in the area this summer, Public Relations is also seeking volunteers to be featured in photos for our 2023-2024 viewbook and other marketing materials.
