Over 25 university representatives will be on NMC’s campus on Thursday, Oct. 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. to talk with students, staff and faculty about their programs and the transfer process. The university representatives will be located in the West Hall Innovation Center.
This is your opportunity to discuss transfer requirements and get information on degrees available at a variety of schools without having to travel to each university. Bring your questions and explore your options!

See cool cars and support students at NMC’s 15th annual Mike McIntosh Memorial Car and Truck Show.
On Saturday, September 11, car enthusiasts will display their classic cars, 4X4s, dragsters, sports cars, modified late models, motorcycles and more. The show, from 11 a.m.–3 p.m., will be held at NMC’s Automotive Services Building at 2510 Aero Park Drive. Admission is free for spectators. There is a $10 entry fee per vehicle for contestants. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Trophies are awarded for best of show in each class. Enjoy food, music, prizes and trophies for entrants. Proceeds benefit NMC’s Automotive Program and scholarships. Student projects and vehicles will also be on display.
The show is named for the late NMC Automotive instructor Mike McIntosh, who retired in 2004 after 34 years of service. McIntosh organized the first car show for the Automotive Program in 2004.

TRAVERSE CITY — Northwestern Michigan College’s International Affairs Forum will kick off its fall lecture series on Sept. 16 with “Middle East: War, Women and Struggle” featuring CNN senior international correspondent and Middle East specialist Arwa Damon.
Damon has spent much of 2021 reporting from Iraq and Syria. Her award-winning reporting on the humanitarian crisis in Syria has proven to be essential, helping viewers understand the human toll of the ongoing conflict. Damon is president and co-founder of the International Network for Aid, Relief, and Assistance (INARA), a non-profit that “provides life-altering medical care for children from conflict areas who have catastrophic injuries or illnesses.”
Damon’s appearance will be livestreamed with a moderator on stage in Milliken Auditorium starting at 6 p.m. Audience members may stream directly to their own device ($10 suggested donation) or watch the livestream in person at Milliken Auditorium (tickets $15 at the door).
The fall season continues with the following:
- Oct. 21: “Russia: Conflict, Cooperation or Containment?” featuring Vanessa Acker, head of political unit, office of Russian Affairs, U.S. State Department. 6 p.m.
- Nov. 16: “Mexico: Migration, Trafficking and Trade” featuring former U.S. Ambassador to Mexico and Argentina Anthony Wayne. 6 p.m.

You’re invited to attend the NMC Music Department’s first Music Convocation of the semester this Friday, Sept. 3 at 1 p.m. in Milliken Auditorium. We’re kicking off the year with a short (40-minute) concert featuring Music, Audio Tech and Dance faculty. Join us Friday for a variety of performances including solo trumpet, dance, Spirituals, Jazz, Bluegrass, Funk, and for good measure, a little Samba.

To wrap up its 27th season,”Finding Solutions to Global Crises”, the International Affairs Forum revisits its popular year-end format: a Foreign Policy Mashup on June 17 @ 5:00 PM featuring Bill Clifford, president and CEO of the World Affairs Councils of America (WACA).
Bill Clifford is a Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute of the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). Previously, he served as Asia Bureau Chief for the pioneering multimedia venture CBS MarketWatch, where he launched and directed news bureaus in Japan and Hong Kong.
Since joining WACA in 2013, Clifford has been facilitating discussions with luminaries from diplomatic circles, NGOs, the private sector, and academia: the ambassadors, scholars, thought leaders, policy advisors, authors, and journalists who help us understand the world’s most pressing issues.
June’s panel discussion will dive into civics in an age of partisanship, President Biden’s evolving foreign policy, global COVID-19, the international reverberations of the Black Lives Matter Movement, climate policy, and more. The event will be broadcast via Zoom. Start drafting your questions for a vigorous Q&A, and join in at 5 PM on June 17.

The NMC Choir is holding its first live performance in over 15 months! The NMC Choirs (made up of students, community members, and many faculty members) have been rehearsing virtually all semester and will perform this Sunday, under a large tent in the middle of campus. Please join us — bring a lawn chair or a blanket, and enjoy the sounds of live music! Here are the details:

Human rights abuses, trade tensions, internet censorship, suppression of pro-democracy protests, intellectual property disputes. Contentious issues abound when China is in the mix. And China is always in the mix.
On Thursday, May 20 at 5 p.m. the International Affairs Forum welcomes Lingling Wei, senior China correspondent for The Wall Street Journal and co-author of Superpower Showdown: How the Battle Between Trump and Xi Threatens a New Cold War (Harper Collins 2020). Economic and political frictions persist post-Trump. Lingling Wei will dive into the nuance of the U.S.-China relationship with her expertise in finance, economics, and trade.
Nathan Payne, executive editor of the Traverse City Record-Eagle, will moderate the discussion. Payne was the 2018–19 Abrams Nieman Fellow for Local Investigative Journalism at Harvard University.

Make a difference in a few hours that can last decades! ReLeaf Michigan, a non-profit tree organization, in collaboration with Northwestern Michigan College, will be planting 15 trees along the Dogwood lot at Northwestern Michigan College on Friday, April 30 between 8:45 a.m. and noon to increase tree canopy, with funding from the DTE Foundation.
ReLeaf Michigan’s tree experts will be there to show volunteers how to plant a tree and oversee the event. Covid protocols will be followed. Volunteers are asked to sign up as a ‘family’ or a ‘team’ of 3 to 4 folks who have been social distancing together. Masks are required and gloves recommended. Please wear closed toe shoes and bring a shovel if you have one. Event occurs rain or shine (we’re a hearty group!). No planting experience necessary. We hope to see you there!

NMC is excited to announce that a modified, in-person Commencement ceremony is being planned for both the Class of 2021 and the Class of 2020. It will take place Saturday, May 1, 2021, between 1-4 p.m. at Milliken Auditorium in the Dennos Museum Center on NMC’s main campus. Students were asked to RSVP for the ceremony by April 16, and were assigned walk-through times via email.

The walk-through Commencement will be held in accordance with NMC’s safety protocols, as well as state and local COVID-19 guidelines, which are subject to change. Details as we now know them are below. Current state guidelines run through April 19, 2021.
The ceremony will be streamed online for those who cannot attend in person at youtube.com/NorthwesternMichiganCollege. Following the walk-through, graduates may continue their celebration outside the museum, where additional guests may join, following social distancing guidelines. Additional photo opportunities and congratulations stations will be available under tents.

We will have performances by East Bay Drive featuring Laurie Sears, Little Graves, Doc DPC, and more! The stage will be set up on the lawn between West Hall and Founders Hall (note the new location) where there is plenty of space for people to come jam and stay safe. The International Affairs Forum continues a worthy annual tradition by commemorating World Press Freedom Day. As ever, it is vital that journalists be able to conduct their work freely, without fear of reprisal. To speak to the ongoing issue, on April 15 @ 7:00 PM IAF welcomes Dr. Courtney Radsch, advocacy director at the Committee to Protect Journalists.
Dr. Radsch addresses the daily dangers journalists face the world over. She is author of Cyberactivism and Citizen Journalism in Egypt: Digital Dissidence and Political Change. As a veteran journalist, researcher, and free expression advocate, she writes and speaks frequently about the intersection of media, technology, and human rights.
The conversation will be moderated by Jacob Wheeler, NMC journalism instructor, editor of the Glen Arbor Sun, and journalist-at-large. This event will be broadcast via Zoom and simulcast on IPR News Radio, WICA 91.5 FM. Join the discussion on April 15!
