To wrap up its 27th season,”Finding Solutions to Global Crises”, the International Affairs Forum revisits its popular year-end format: a Foreign Policy Mashup on June 17 @ 5:00 PM featuring Bill Clifford, president and CEO of the World Affairs Councils of America (WACA).
Bill Clifford is a Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute of the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). Previously, he served as Asia Bureau Chief for the pioneering multimedia venture CBS MarketWatch, where he launched and directed news bureaus in Japan and Hong Kong.
Since joining WACA in 2013, Clifford has been facilitating discussions with luminaries from diplomatic circles, NGOs, the private sector, and academia: the ambassadors, scholars, thought leaders, policy advisors, authors, and journalists who help us understand the world’s most pressing issues.
June’s panel discussion will dive into civics in an age of partisanship, President Biden’s evolving foreign policy, global COVID-19, the international reverberations of the Black Lives Matter Movement, climate policy, and more. The event will be broadcast via Zoom. Start drafting your questions for a vigorous Q&A, and join in at 5 PM on June 17.

The NMC Choir is holding its first live performance in over 15 months! The NMC Choirs (made up of students, community members, and many faculty members) have been rehearsing virtually all semester and will perform this Sunday, under a large tent in the middle of campus. Please join us — bring a lawn chair or a blanket, and enjoy the sounds of live music! Here are the details:

On Thursday, May 20 at 5 p.m. the International Affairs Forum welcomes Lingling Wei, senior China correspondent for The Wall Street Journal and co-author of Superpower Showdown: How the Battle Between Trump and Xi Threatens a New Cold War (Harper Collins 2020). Economic and political frictions persist post-Trump. Lingling Wei will dive into the nuance of the U.S.-China relationship with her expertise in finance, economics, and trade.
Nathan Payne, executive editor of the Traverse City Record-Eagle, will moderate the discussion. Payne was the 2018–19 Abrams Nieman Fellow for Local Investigative Journalism at Harvard University.

The 2021 Virtual Honors Convocation will be streamed Friday, April 30 at 5:30 p.m. The annual event has been adapted this year to recognize NMC students for their outstanding achievements in their academic areas. Students and their families can watch the ceremony from the NMC YouTube Channel beginning at 5:30 p.m. Faculty and staff will be taking part to recognize students in their respective area. Make a difference in a few hours that can last decades! ReLeaf Michigan, a non-profit tree organization, in collaboration with Northwestern Michigan College, will be planting 15 trees along the Dogwood lot at Northwestern Michigan College on Friday, April 30 between 8:45 a.m. and noon to increase tree canopy, with funding from the DTE Foundation.
ReLeaf Michigan’s tree experts will be there to show volunteers how to plant a tree and oversee the event. Covid protocols will be followed. Volunteers are asked to sign up as a ‘family’ or a ‘team’ of 3 to 4 folks who have been social distancing together. Masks are required and gloves recommended. Please wear closed toe shoes and bring a shovel if you have one. Event occurs rain or shine (we’re a hearty group!). No planting experience necessary. We hope to see you there!

NMC is excited to announce that a modified, in-person Commencement ceremony is being planned for both the Class of 2021 and the Class of 2020. It will take place Saturday, May 1, 2021, between 1-4 p.m. at Milliken Auditorium in the Dennos Museum Center on NMC’s main campus. Students were asked to RSVP for the ceremony by April 16, and were assigned walk-through times via email.

The walk-through Commencement will be held in accordance with NMC’s safety protocols, as well as state and local COVID-19 guidelines, which are subject to change. Details as we now know them are below. Current state guidelines run through April 19, 2021.
The ceremony will be streamed online for those who cannot attend in person at youtube.com/NorthwesternMichiganCollege. Following the walk-through, graduates may continue their celebration outside the museum, where additional guests may join, following social distancing guidelines. Additional photo opportunities and congratulations stations will be available under tents.
NMC Students, Faculty & Staff! Our Audio Tech program is hosting a spring concert on Wednesday, April 14 starting at 5 p.m. on NMC’s main campus. We will have performances by East Bay Drive featuring Laurie Sears, Little Graves, Doc DPC, and more! The stage will be set up on the lawn between West Hall and Founders Hall (note the new location) where there is plenty of space for people to come jam and stay safe. (Please respect COVID-19 social distancing and mask guidelines).
The show will also be livestreamed on the NMC Audio Tech YouTube channel so you can tune in anywhere at any time!

The International Affairs Forum continues a worthy annual tradition by commemorating World Press Freedom Day. As ever, it is vital that journalists be able to conduct their work freely, without fear of reprisal. To speak to the ongoing issue, on April 15 @ 7:00 PM IAF welcomes Dr. Courtney Radsch, advocacy director at the Committee to Protect Journalists.
Dr. Radsch addresses the daily dangers journalists face the world over. She is author of Cyberactivism and Citizen Journalism in Egypt: Digital Dissidence and Political Change. As a veteran journalist, researcher, and free expression advocate, she writes and speaks frequently about the intersection of media, technology, and human rights.
The conversation will be moderated by Jacob Wheeler, NMC journalism instructor, editor of the Glen Arbor Sun, and journalist-at-large. This event will be broadcast via Zoom and simulcast on IPR News Radio, WICA 91.5 FM. Join the discussion on April 15!

Join Dr. Philip J. Deloria, Harvard University history professor and author of Becoming Mary Sully: Toward an American Indian Abstract, Friday, March 5 from 7 to 8 p.m. as he discusses his book on the Native American artist and answers audience questions. Dr. Deloria will be introduced by NMC history instructor Mindy Morton.

A conversation between musician and author Antionio Michael Downing and Kaylan Waterman, musician and host of Detroit’s Kumbuka, an annual remembrance of African Americans in the literary arts. Antonio Michael’s new book, Saga Boy; My Life of Blackness and Becoming, is being released in Canada this month and in the U.S. in September. Written, in part, in our own northern Michigan, Saga Boy tells the harrowing story of the 11-year old Antonio Michael’s displacement from the rainforest of Trinidad to the snowy wilderness of Canada when his beloved grandmother died and his subsequent metamorphosis.
Blackness & Becoming promises a captivating conversation between Downing and Waterman, as well as an opportunity for Q&A and audience comment.
