On November 14, Northwestern Michigan College’s International Affairs Forum presents a vital exploration of global energy trends with John Pournoor, Ph.D., CEO of Government Analytica and former VP of governmental affairs at 3M. The event is sponsored by Mercantile Bank.
Dr. Pournoor will “explore global energy developments through the lens of key geopolitical megatrends that are shaping our future,” with an emphasis on Michigan’s role. With “44 natural gas storage fields” and extensive renewable resources, Michigan has the potential to “recharge our future electric vehicles” and strengthen energy security for industries statewide. Dr. Pournoor will address the “increasing segmentation of global supply and demand” and “geopolitical events which jeopardize and limit supply.” Additionally, the talk will highlight “how environmental policy increasingly drives industrial policy and economic transformation” and provide insights on U.S. energy policy influenced by public perceptions. Registered attendees receive a complimentary digital copy of 12 Global Megatrends: 2025 Edition.
The November 14 hybrid event at the Dennos Museum Center is open to the public and available to watch online. Admission is free for students, educators, and all NMC employees. Get ready for a spook-tacular evening at our Game Night and Boo Basket Exchange on Friday, Oct. 25 from 6–9 p.m. in the Osterlin Lounge!
All supplies for the boo baskets are provided; just bring a small handmade or Halloween-themed item to add. Upon arrival, sign in and get the name of someone to create a boo basket for.

IAF will host a discussion on global migration trends, including key dynamics on the U.S. Southern border, featuring two expert guest speakers Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 6:30 p.m. “Global Migration & The Southern Border” is a hybrid event, in person at the Dennos Museum Center and online. Alan Bersin served as the former assistant secretary in the Office of Policy in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security from 2012-2017. He is the former Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection from 2010-2011. Bersin served as California’s Secretary of Education in the Administration of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Andrew Selee, Ph.D. is the president of the Migration Policy Institute (MPI), “an independent, nonpartisan think tank that seeks to improve immigration and integration policies through authoritative research and analysis, opportunities for learning and dialogue, and the development of new ideas to address complex policy questions.” Prior to his work at MPI, Dr. Selee was the founder & executive vice president of the Mexico Institute at the Woodrow Wilson Center.

Our next Mobile Food Pantry distribution is Monday, Sept. 23 from 3–5 p.m. in the Maple Lot on NMC’s Front Street Campus.
The program is open to ALL STUDENTS and their families. Hop in the car line in the Maple Lot on the Front Street Campus and drive through the distribution loop. Food will be loaded into your trunk. Each recipient receives approximately 7–10 days of fresh fruit, produce and other foodstuff.
No car? No problem! You’re welcome to “walk through” and receive goods in a carry-able way. Feel free to bring a backpack or other reusable bags!
Worried about how you’ll afford snow tires this winter? Have some upcoming major bills? Use our Mobile Food Pantry program to free up the funds you would have spent on food to put towards your other upcoming expenses!
As a college, we recognize that so many students live paycheck to paycheck. Our mobile food pantry is specifically designed for students to supplement income with fresh, healthy foods and free up limited funds to go towards other expenses.
There are no financial requirements or means tests. We welcome everyone who can use an healthy boost to their diet (and budget!).

On Friday, Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. in the Timothy J. Nelson Innovation Center Esports Room, we’ll hold an NCAA College Football 2025 Tournament on the Xbox Series X/S and Playstation 5 consoles. Prizes will be given to the top two winners on both consoles. Free to play and earn bragging rights for the year.
