Students in NMC’s Western and Eastern Religions classes are hosting a conference on Saturday, April 13 in the Timothy J. Nelson Innovation Center at NMC’s Front Street Campus.
The Comparative Religion and Interfaith Conference is the culmination of an optional course project that will serve as a way for students to apply their learning of world religions in a way that benefits our campus and local community. The conference aims to increase knowledge and understanding of not only diverse religious and cultural perspectives, but also of some of the ways religion pops up in the world around us. Children’s activities will be available throughout the event except during lunch. This event is free and open to the public.

Stop by the Library on Wednesday, April 17 from 5–11 p.m. for the the end-of-semester finals studyfest ! We’ll have the fuel and support you need to tackle your exam prep, final essays and projects, as well as a movement room and a craft corner to de-stress with some crocheting and coloring. The Writing Center, Student Success and tutoring teams will be available to provide additional support.
Two rounds of Dino’s Pizza will be provided along with a selection of other snacks, beverages and fun raffle prizes. Stop by for a bit or stay for the duration and take a serious dent out of your finals work pile!

Nelson Innovation Center room 106/107 for students to learn about the appropriate next steps to take after being accepted as a first year student or transfer student to a college or university.

The Experiential Learning Institute and Student Success team are excited to present an interactive, “Study Smart, Finish Strong” finals preparation workshop from 12–1 p.m. on Monday, April 8. This will be an interactive lunch and learn for students, focused on understanding the learning cycle and how to apply that knowledge to make a study plan for finals! The workshop will take place in the ELI office (TJNIC 103) and lunch will be provided, courtesy of ELI.

Grand Valley State University is hosting a free community event in partnership with NMC where experts will share their experience with artificial intelligence in education.
Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has sparked significant interest in the academic world, dominating headlines and becoming a focal point of academic discussions. A prevailing concern is that students may exploit AI to complete assignments and write papers. Instead of perceiving AI as a threat to academic integrity, it is crucial to acknowledge its potential as a tool and remain open to the possibilities it presents for enriching education. By adopting a forward-thinking approach, educators can leverage AI to complement traditional teaching methods, fostering a more dynamic and effective learning environment.
The discussion will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10. Register at gvsu.edu/traverse/ai to attend in person or join the livestream. Those joining in-person will meet in Room 07 (lower level) of the NMC University Center.

Immerse yourself in the joyful exuberance of the NMC Jazz Bands under the direction of trumpeter and educator Joshua L Wagner on Saturday, April 20 in the Milliken Auditorium. This concert will feature vibraphonist Jim Cooper as soloist with the Jazz Lab Band, Jazz Big Band, and a special Jazz Combo that will be performing works by Jim. The concert will feature a vibrant mix of music genres, showcasing each band’s versatility. Expect an evening filled with rhythm, melody, and harmony that will leave you spellbound.
Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. with a brief intermission.

The Northwestern Michigan College (NMC) Library and Traverse Area District Library (TADL) will host author and chef Abra Berens at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 11 in the McGuire Community Room at the public library on Woodmere Avenue. The speaking engagement is part of the Library of Michigan’s 2024 Michigan Notable Books Author Tour.
Berens, currently farmer and chef at Granor Farm in Three Oaks, started cooking at Zingerman’s Deli in Ann Arbor, co-founded Bare Knuckle Farm in Northport, and has collaborated with Farm Club in Leelanau County. She currently serves on the advisory board of NMC’s Great Lakes Culinary Institute.
Abra Berens will discuss her latest cookbook Pulp: A Practical Guide to Cooking with Fruit; recently selected as a Michigan Notable Book for 2024. In addition to highlighting recipes using fruits of the northwest lower peninsula, Berens will discuss challenges and opportunities related to area agriculture and food production.
At the April 11 event at TADL, students of NMC’s Great Lakes Culinary Institute will recreate both sweet and savory recipes from Pulp: A Practical Guide to Cooking with Fruit for attendees to sample.

Dress up and enjoy a night of glamour, laughter and entertainment at the second annual Gala to Give. Organized in 2023, Gala to Give was created by NMC students for the NMC community. It’s a time to celebrate achievement, perseverance, and the sense of community that makes NMC great!
This year’s event, The Garden Gala, brings together students from across campus and features performances from Audio Tech students and refreshments provided by the Multicultural Student Club. The Garden Gala is a unique opportunity for students to plan and execute an elegant event, using creativity and imagination to create a very special evening. During the gala, there will be dancing, refreshing mocktails and drawings for raffle prizes (tickets available for purchase during the event),
The Garden Gala will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 5 in the Dennos Museum Center. Tickets are limited and all proceeds raised will be designated for the NMC Food Pantry. Tickets are $10 for current NMC students and $30 for guests, alumni and NMC employees. Sponsor packages are also available.

The Northwest Food Coalition of local food pantries, including NMC’s Food Pantry will hold its annual “Empty Bowls” fundraising event from 1–3 p.m. on Sunday, April 28 at the Howe Arena in Traverse City.
Proceeds from the event will support the Farm 2 Neighbor Program which provides fresh produce and proteins to NFC member pantries such as our own NMC pantry. This program allows us to stock fresh items like greens, root crops, eggs, and chicken from local farms.
The theme of this year’s event is Artful Hearts: Brushing Away Hunger, and it’s a great chance to turn out to support both regional food access efforts and local agricultural producers in a collaboration that makes a positive impact on the daily lives of many NMC students. NMC will host their annual Holi celebration on Tuesday, March 19. Holi is a Hindu festival that originated in India but is now celebrated in different communities all over the world. Holi is a time for people of all backgrounds to come together and celebrate the triumph of good over evil and the new changes that spring brings!
The celebration begins with a Lunch & Learn session at 12:45 p.m. in room 106/107 of the Timothy J. Nelson Innovation Center. NMC Religions professor Sarah Montgomery-Richards will give a presentation about tradition of Holi celebrations. Jim Bensley from International Services will discuss the NMC Global Endorsement and study abroad opportunities and Alex Walsh, of NMC’s Multicultural Student Club, will talk about the Persian festival of Nowruz.
Lunch will be provided compliments of the Hawk Owl Café, who will be serving Indian cuisine. Attendees should stop by room 106/107 during 12:15–12:40 p.m. to get their meal ticket before picking up their lunch.
Color-throwing will follow the Lunch & Learn at 1:30 p.m. in the Cherry lot.
This event is open to the community and all ages are welcome.

Northwestern Michigan College’s International Affairs Forum continues its 30th season on Tuesday, March 19 in the Dennos Museum Center. Join IAF for AI & Global Cooperation: What’s Happening & What’s Next featuring Joshua Meltzer, Senior Fellow in the Global Economy and Development Program at the Brookings Institution. Meltzer will discuss why generative AI matters, how government policy can address new risks that AI exposes, as well as economic potential for scientific discovery, and potential competition with China.
Meltzer’s research focuses on international economic relations and the intersection of technology and trade policy. Along with Cameron Kerry, he co-leads the Forum on Cooperation in Artificial Intelligence (FCAI)—a multi-stakeholder dialogue with government officials from the U.S., EU, Canada, the U.K., Singapore, Japan, and Australia, as well as AI experts from industry and academia. He also leads the USMCA initiative, which focuses on how the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) can strengthen international cooperation in North America.
The March 19 in-person event at the Dennos Museum Center is open to the public and available to livestream online. Admission is $15 per person. Admission is free for all students and educators. The reception begins at 6 p.m. with the program following at 7 p.m.
