NMC Pride Mixer

Passport to Puerto Rico
The Passport Student Lecture Series is a chance to explore other cultures through the experience of NMC students.
Hear Rafael Hernandez, a culinary student at NMC, talk about life and culture in Puerto Rico 12:30–1:30 p.m. Friday, April 8 in West Hall Innovation Center Rm. 106. Empanadillas will be served, made by Rafael from his grandmother’s recipe.

Light Up the Night
Join us Tuesday, April 19 from 7:30–8:15 p.m. for an evening of support and solidarity for survivors of sexual assault here on campus. There will be free food, poetry reading, personal testimonies, a vigil and more! Meet outside of the West Hall Innovation Center and East Hall.

Join the Student Life Office Thursday, April 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in West Hall Innovation Center in room 104/105 for FREE food and a movie viewing in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness month!
OptiMize Workshop
Representatives from the OptiMize program out of the University of Michigan will be on campus after the Transfer Fair Tuesday 3/15 to help students learn more about the opportunities it can offer, whether or not you wish to attend Univ. of Michigan.

Theater of War’s ‘The Nurse Antigone’ Screening
In collaboration with English and Health Occupations faculty members, NMC Library will host a screening of Theater of War’s upcoming production, ‘The Nurse Antigone‘ on Thursday, March 17, at 5–7 p.m. in West Hall 106/107.
We will watch the performance (it begins at 5 p.m.) and subsequent panel discussion, and also hold our own informal local conversation to follow for any who are interested.
Pizza will be provided.

Stop by this workshop in West Hall 104 on Wednesday, March 16 at 12:30 p.m. with our advising partners from the University Center. They’ll be going over important details for transferring to a four-year college after NMC.

IAF event to address populism, Germany’s new perspective and Russia’s war in Ukraine
On Thursday, March 17, at 6 p.m. the International Affairs Forum engages with Jeff Rathke, president of the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies at Johns Hopkins University, to discuss German and European reactions to the war in Ukraine, the rise of populism, and Germany’s new role.
Rathke (left) served 24 years as a Foreign Service officer, dedicated primarily to U.S. relations with Europe. He was deputy chief of staff to the NATO Secretary General in Brussels. In Washington, he was deputy director of the Office of European Security and Political Affairs. He was a Weinberg Fellow at Princeton University. He also served at U.S. embassies in Dublin, Moscow and Riga, which he helped open after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Join IAF on March 17 for a robust discussion moderated by John Zachman, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Political Science at Northwestern Michigan College. The virtual event will include public Q & A.

Holi Celebration!
We are so excited to be celebrating Holi on campus this year!
We will start the day Wednesday, March 16 with a 1 p.m. Lunch & Learn where Sarah Montgomery-Richards will give a brief history and overview of the Hindu festival celebrating the start of spring while we enjoy some Indian food for lunch. Then at 1:30 p.m. we will move our celebration outside with the traditional color throwing! We will listen to Bollywood music, throw colors, and enjoy some time together as a community!

Seeing Each Other as Human Again
A captivating lecture, “Seeing Each Other as Human Again” will be given by Abdu Murray at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 17 in Scholars Hall 109. You may have noticed that the world has become alarmingly polarized. From politics, to religion, to social issues, we have come to see those who disagree with us as the enemy and even less than human. Is there a better way to engage in dialogue without compromising our convictions? Can we engage in debate without hate? Abdu Murray offers ways forward from a Christian perspective.
Abdu is an international speaker and author on the intersections of the Christian and the questions of culture. He is the President of Embrace the Truth International and the author of several books including Saving Truth – Finding Meaning and Clarity in a Post-Truth World, Grand Central Question – Answering the Critical Concerns of the Major Worldviews, and his forthcoming More Than a White Man’s Religion – Why the Gospel Has Never Been Merely White, Male-Centered, or Just Another Religion. For most of his life, Abdu was a proud Muslim until a nine-year historical, philosophical, theological, and scientific investigation pointed him to the Christian faith.
Abdu has spoken to diverse international audiences and has participated in debates and dialogues across the globe. He holds a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Michigan and earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School.
Abdu lives in the Metro Detroit area with his wife, Nicole, and their three children.

Long Night Against Procrastination: Spring 2022 Mid-Semester Edition
Come to the NMC Library and the 1st floor of the West Hall Innovation Center Wednesday, March 9 from 2–8 p.m. for an afternoon and evening of collaboration, commiseration and camaraderie as we all tackle the mid-semester homework heap.
We’ll have snacks and hot drinks, and NMC’s Student Success Coaches are bringing back the pancake bar from 4–6 p.m. by popular demand!
Come for the snacks and solidarity, stay for the support. Peer study groups, student success coaches, Writing and Reading Center staff, and librarians will all be on hand to help you power through assignments and exam prep.
New this semester, we’ll also have an onsite child care room for kids preK and up to give you some uninterrupted focus time (parents must remain reachable and in the building).
